SOL Field Hockey PIAA Preview Capsules (Opening Round)

Central Bucks South and Hatboro-Horsham will be in action when the PIAA Class AAA State Tournament begins on Tuesday.

1-2 CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH vs 3-3 PENN MANOR at Wissahickon High School, 3 p.m.

Central Bucks South

  • 20-2 overall
  • 13-1 SOL Continental Conference champions (seventh consecutive conference title)
  • 15-game winning streak to open season snapped with 1-0 overtime loss to eighth-seeded Central Bucks West on Oct. 10.
  • 2013 District One Champions

How they got here: The Titans lost a classic battle with top-seeded West Chester Henderson in Saturday’s District One championship game, falling 1-0 despite holding an advantage in shots (24-6) and corners (22-9). In last Wednesday’s district semifinal contest, senior Megan Hamilton scored a pair of goals to lead the Titans to a 2-0 win over conference rival Hatboro-Horsham. In a district quarterfinal game, the Titans, despite 20 corners and 24 shots, defeated seventh-seeded Council Rock South by just a 2-0 score. Corrine Kenney and Rachel Gorman accounted for the team’s goals. In South’s 5-0 second round win over 18th-seeded Strath Haven, Gorman and Kenney each had a pair of goals while Hamilton scored one goal.

Penn Manor

  • 21-3-1
  • Lancaster-Lebanon League champion for fourth time in five years
  • Defeated Warwick 2-0 in the L-L title game
  • Led by senior Rachel Suter with 19 goals and eight assists (46 points)
  • Sophomore Cassie Kline has a team high 13 assists to go along with seven goals (27 points).

How they got here:  Penn Manor was the third-seeded team in the District 3 Class AAA Tournament. The Comets defeated Cedar Cliff (5-0) and Manheim Central (2-1) but then were upset by seventh-seeded Warwick 2-1 in overtime in the semifinals. They rebounded to defeat fifth-seeded Cumberland Valley 2-1 in the third place game.

12-1 CARDINAL O’HARA vs 1-4 HATBORO-HORSHAM at Germantown Super Site, 5 p.m.

Hatboro-Horsham

  • 14-7-1 overall
  • 9-5- SOL Continental Conference
  • First trip to state tournament since 2006

How they got here:  The Hatters defeated Spring-Ford 2-1 in overtime in an opening round district game and then pulled off a pair of major upsets. They sent third-seeded Plymouth Whitemarsh home in a second round game, sparked by single goals from Colby Eldridge and Syd Rausa. They followed that with a 1-0 upset of sixth-seeded Downingtown West, thanks to a goal in the second half by Casey Swezey. In a district semifinal game, the Hatters fell to SOL Continental Conference rival Central Bucks South 2-0. The Hatters fell to Owen J Robert 1-0 in overtime in Friday’s third place game.

Cardinal O’Hara

  • 15-5 overall
  • 2013 PCL Champions
  • Suffered regular season losses to Central Bucks South (2-1), Downingtown West (2-1), Garnet Valley (4-2), Agnes Irwin (4-3) and Notre Dame (2-0)

How they got here:  Defeated Archbishop Carroll 2-1 in the PCL title game. Sarah Quintus scored the game winner 1:03 into the first overtime. Bridget Egan also scored, and Katelyn Markley led the defense. In the District 12 title game against Public League champion Washington, O’Hara rolled to a 10-0 win.
