SOUDERTON 3, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 1
The Indians helped their district playoff chances with a big win over the National Conference leading Indians in a non-league contest on Saturday.
“Wow, what an exciting win for us,” coach Lauren Whiteside said. “We were ready for today.
“We knew that they had a really good record in the National Conference, and we wanted to make our mark, and we did. We played as a team today, putting pressure on the ball, passing and supporting each other the whole game.”
Abbey Gabriel, who had two goals and an assist, put the Indians on the scoreboard at the 24:05 mark of the first half. Four minutes later, Rock North rallied to knot the score on a goal by Alex Kuzma (Alyssa Mangano assist), but the Indians were unfazed, answering with a goal at the 14:47 mark when Tara Maloney scored, using a Gabriel assist to send the Indians into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
“After we scored the first goal, we knew that we were in this, and the momentum continued our way,” Whiteside said.
If the Bed Red needed insurance, they got it when Gabriel scored an unassisted goal at the 16:57 mark of the second half for the 3-1 final.
“Abbey Gabriel was on today,” Whiteside said. “She had two goals and one assist and several other great shots on goal.
“When she was in the circle, she just kept putting the ball on cage and hoping it would go in…and they did. All in all, this is a big team win for us. I am very proud of the team for stepping up and coming together.”
Rock North held an 11-4 advantage in shots, but Souderton goalie Jen Bergey was the difference in the game, turning away 10 of those shots.
“Council Rock North put a lot of pressure on our defense, but we were confident and ready for it,” Whiteside said. “They did a great job denying the ball and played solid.
“Bekah Hershey consistently plays well for us, and she was a huge part of our win. Caroline Erkes also played a great game for us defensively and was ready for the challenge.
“In goal, Jen Bergey kept us in the game. She had 10 saves, and they were really big saves. They all could have gone in the net, but she turned them away.”
Souderton evened its record at 8-8 while Rock North is 12-4.
