UPPER MORELAND 2, UPPER MERION 1

The Golden Bears had reason to celebrate on Thursday. Their win over the Vikings was their first in league play since Sept. 28, 2010, when they upended Cheltenham 3-1. Thursday’s win broke a 31-game league skid.
“The girls played very, very well everywhere,” coach Karen Grossi said. “They were really excited. This was a game that was close the last time we played them (a 1-0 Upper Merion win), but we couldn’t find the cage and they did.”
In Thursday’s win, an unassisted goal by Nikki Benson at the 25:04 mark sent the Golden Bears into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
“In the first half, it was mostly in midfield and in our offensive end. They didn’t get any shots off,” Grossi said. “The girls just played really well together.
“It was one of those games where at halftime I didn’t have to tell them to cut in front of the girl, to talk to each other because they were already doing it. That’s what we have been waiting for all season.”
The Golden Bears upped their lead to 2-0 when Maura O’Leary connected less than two minutes into the second half. The Vikings cut that lead in half when Danielle Antonucci scored, using a Dasia Aranjo assist, at the 12:17 mark. The Golden Bears’ defense and goalie Bridget Meade (four saves) did the rest.
“Upper Merion came out stronger than us in the second half,” Grossi said. “They had a great second half. It was in our defensive zone most of the time.
“Our defense stayed strong, and we were able to hold them off. It was an exciting game. The girls just played together and never lost faith in each other.
“Bridget Meade did a great job in goal. Upper Merion had a couple of nice shots at the end. Emily Jeinnings, our right mid, was extremely strong. She did a great job. They all played well and the defense, in particular, in the second half.”
The Golden Bears are 1-8 in the league (2-10 overall) while the Vikings fell to 3-5-1 in the league (3-9-1 overall).
Upper Moreland will host Norristown on Monday while Upper Merion entertains Springfield.

UPPER DUBLIN 4, NORRISTOWN 2
Jen Harchut, who finished with the hat trick, scored a pair of second half goals, breaking a 2-2 halftime tie and propelling the Flying Cardinals to the win. Harchut connected for a goal that turned out to be the game winner less than two minutes into the second half, using a Caroline End assist. She added an insurance goal (Emily Long assist) with 10:58 remaining for the 4-2 final.
The two teams spent the first half exchanging goals with Alycia Hildebrand (End assist) spotting the Flying Cardinals an early 1-0 lead. A goal by Norristown’s Delzayah Culbreath (Keifonna Ferguson assist) knotted the score midway through the half. Harchut (Hildebrand assist) scored four minutes later, but Emma Hagel (Ferguson assist) answered with the equalizer for the Eagles with 1:47 remaining in the half to send the teams into the intermission deadlocked.
Norristown had the better of play on the field – the Eagles held a 27-9 advantage in shots and a 14-7 edge in corners, but the Flying Cardinals had an advantage the only place that matter – on the scoreboard.
Upper Dublin goalie Sara Weinberg had a big game, turning away 15 shots. Norristown’s Sierrah Slaughter and Lauren Whitley combined for seven saves. The Flying Cardinals (5-7, 5-4 SOL) will host Cheltenham on Monday while the Eagles (4-8, 4-5) will travel to Upper Moreland.

CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 3, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 2 (OT)
The Patriots gave the Bucks all they could handle in yet another classic battle between the sister schools, but West’s Bryn Boylan turned a Maddie Shields pass on a corner into the game winner at the 11:12 mark of OT.
“It was a great East/West game,” West coach Courtney Hughes said. “It was high intensity.
“East played a really good game. They had a good game plan, and their goalie (Sam Gregorczyck) had a heck of a game. Some of her saves were ridiculous saves, and they had two or three defensive saves.”
Included in Gregorczyck’s repertoire of saves was a diving stick save of a penalty stroke with four minutes remaining in regulation to preserve the tie. Defenders Alex Law and Sydney Badger each had a pair of defensive saves for the Patriots.
“They are doing the right thing in their defensive circle,” Hughes said of the Patriots.
At the 21:48 mark, Emma Rosenthal scored on a corner, using a Katelyn Stout assist to give the Patriots the early lead. West’s Elena Romesburg scored an unassisted goal midway through the half to knot the score. Another Romesburg goal, this one with a Kim Hitchcock assist on corner play, put the Bucks on top 2-1 with five minutes remaining in the half.
The Patriots, after a timeout, drew a corner, and scored with 8.5 seconds remaining in the half to knot the score on a goal by Chelsea Fife (Sarah Thiroway assist).
Neither team scored in the second half.
“The second half was even better hockey,” Hughes said. “I know we played better, and they were playing well. They had some standout defense in the second half.
“It was just a very energetic game. They had a couple of breakaways that we stepped up and stopped. The second half was really, really good hockey – some amazing passing sequences and some balls you couldn’t believe did not go in the cage.”
Hughes went on to laud the performance of several players.
“It was such a great team game,” she said. “Erick Fiorelli played well, and Kim Hitchcock was creating so many things. She had a great game.
“Christian DeAngelis, our right mid – he was on fire. The whole second half he was all over the place. Toward the end of the second half, Jacq Fitzgerald, our center back, had some really outstanding passes and block tackles to keep them from trying to take the momentum.
“Regardless of the records, the East-West game is always a huge game for both teams. You could definitely tell both teams left their heart and soul on the field.”
The Bucks (11-1, 8-1 SOL) will host Souderton on Monday night at War Memorial Field while the Patriots (3-10, 1-8) will travel to North Penn.

HATBORO-HORSHAM 4, SOUDERTON 0
Despite mounting all sorts of offensive pressure in the opening half, the Hatters, who fired 12 shots on goal, took just a 1-0 lead into halftime. They took 14 shots in the second half but this time connected on three.
“In the second half, we finished better,” coach Laura Swezey said. “We transitioned the ball well through the midfield, getting it up to the forward line for the finish.
“We transitioned the ball from back Jane Henry through the midfield of Casey Swezey, Jenna Cutilli, Kelsey Hopkins and Jaime DiQuattro.”
Colby Eldridge (Kelsey Hopkins assist) accounted for the Hatters’ lone first half goal, connecting during corner play at the 16:38 mark. Eldridge (Syd Rausa assist) ended a 30-minute scoring drought when she connected at the 16:38 mark in the second half, and that opened the floodgates. Just over a minute later, Carlee Baldus scored, using an Eldridge assist, and at the 10:30 mark Rausa found the cage, using a Baldus assist for the 4-0 final.
Hatter keeper Emily Braunewell was credited with six saves in the shutout.
