SOL Field Hockey Wrap (9-4-12)

On a day that saw most of the field hockey action wiped out by rain, Central Bucks South faced Wissahickon in a battle of last year’s SOL conference champions.

One year after rolling to a Continental Conference title and a number one seed in the District One Tournament, the Titans are quietly serving notice that they are once again the team to beat in the SOL and – quite possibly – the district.
The fact that they defeated a Trojan squad that took a hit to graduation might not have been all that shocking, but the methodical manner in which they did it was.
Still, captain Amber Steigerwalt – who had a pair of goals and an assist - was hardly gloating when it was over. As a matter of fact, just the opposite was true.
“We try to stay humble,” the senior forward said. “We didn’t lose too many seniors last year, and we work really hard at practice, and we just hope for the best.
“As long as we play well, we’re happy.”
The Titans certainly played well in Tuesday’s decisive win, although for a while it looked as though the game might be a rerun of last year’s regular season contest – a Titan win that was decided in overtime.
Things changed in a hurry after junior Megan Hamilton (Steigerwalt assist) broke a scoreless deadlock with a goal at the 11:57 mark of the first half. The Titans all but put the game out of reach with a pair of goals within a 90-second span late in the half.
Sophomore Mackenzie Harding turned a Corrine Kenney pass on a corner into a goal at the 4:17 mark, and then it was Steigerwalt (Jessica Schmidt assist) connecting on a goal during corner play to send the Titans into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
“We came in thinking it would be tough because last year we went to overtime,” Steigerwalt said. “I think our communication really pumps each other up, and when we make a good play, we know to keep our markings until the ball gets in the net. We had really good warm-up, and we were all focused. We knew we wanted to come in and win it.
“They’re a tough team, but once you score, the other team will get a little down.”
The Titans closed out the scoring with a pair of second half goals. Again, both came within a 90-second span with Steigerwalt connecting on a perfectly-placed shot across goal for the first and Shannon Dougherty taking the ball off the goalie’s pads for the score and the 5-0 final.
“I think the decision making and ball patterns really allowed our team to play good hockey today,” coach Jeff Harding said. “For us, it’s always been about making good choices because the rest will come.
“Emily Cliggett is a sophomore playing left mid, and every game she’s playing she’s getting better and better. Wissahickon is a very good team. They’ve got really good players, so we had to play really well as a unit to get the result that we wanted.”
