CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 1
Riley Donnelly made sure her team’s inaugural game on Lt. Colby J. Umbrell Field would be a good one, exploding for the hat trick to lead the Patriots to the non-league win.
“This is a really good game for us, especially coming off a little bit of a rocky end last year,” Donnelly said. “We’ve had a few coaches over the years, and to come out like this is a great feeling. It boosts our confidence, for sure.”
Neither team got on the scoreboard until just 4:03 remained in the first half when Donnelly (Reilly Finegan assist) turned the rebound of a goalie save into a goal. Less than a minute later, the sophomore midfielder scored after a standout individual effort, scoring from the top of the circle to send the Patriots into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
“I thought they were swinging the ball around and passing it well – seeing each other, communicating and hustling,” first-year East coach Michelle Finegan said. “They were fighting hard.”
The Golden Hawks, who did not manage a shot or corner in the opening half, came to life in the second half, and it was a 2-1 game when – on South’s first corner - Caroline McGovern turned Tori Wright’s insert pass into a goal at the 26:02 mark of the second half.
Donnelly, however, had an answer, connecting on a reverse stick goal at the 23:54 mark.
“She’s amazing,” Finegan said. “This summer she trained and made it to the National Futures 16 Championship, she was selected to the Junior Olympics, and she’s also on the U17 Indoor US National team, and she’s really coming into her own.
“She’s one of the elite players in the area, and I’m excited for her.”
Neither team scored the rest of the way although the Golden Hawks had their opportunities, drawing seven second half corners.
“Our team didn’t show up to play until the second half,” Rock South coach Lisa Belz said. “They did pull it together. I thought they did some nice things in the second half, but we waited a little too long to turn it on.
“Hopefully, it’s a learning experience. It’s only our first game, and they can make changes for the rest of the season. (CB East) looked good.”
For the Patriots, the big win came on the heels of a preseason that saw their squad tie one of its scrimmages and fall in the other.
“I think the great thing about scrimmages is you learn what you need to work on and what you’re good at, and I think we really took home all the things we needed to improve, and we executed them and followed through,” Stout said. “It was a team effort.
“Every single person on that field contributed, did something amazing. The first game sets the pace for the rest of the season, so coming out strong and proving that what you’ve been working for is paying off sets the tone for the rest of the season. I know for our team we can only go up from here.”
Rock South goalie Julia Pero turned away 15 shots to keep her team within striking distance. East’s Sydney Richter turned away two shots in the win.

ABINGTON 4, CHELTENHAM 0
The visiting Ghosts got on the board with a goal from Kaila Brown after a passing play from Brianna Jameson and Samantha McGee with 20:36 left in the first half. McGee scored an unassisted goal eight minutes later, and Brown closed out the half with the Ghosts' third goal of the game, sending the Ghosts into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
The second half remained scoreless until McGee found the cage off a Jameson assist with 6:54 remaining. The Ghosts edged the Panthers in corners, earning 10 corners to the Panthers’ eight corners.
“Rebecca Markham and Grace Terrizzi did a great job in the midfield helping the ball transition to the offense,” Abington coach Amanda McMahon said.
Alyssa Herman earned the shutout for Abington with two saves. Panther goalkeeper Tegan Dorley recorded 15 saves on the day.

COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 1, WISSAHICKON 0
Rachel Pomerantz turned a Jennica Jonovich pass into a goal 9:05 remaining in the second half, breaking a scoreless tie and propelling the Indians to the non-league win.
“Their goalie was very good, and we did not finish well today although we had a number of opportunities,” Rock North coach Heather Whalin said. “Their defense was strong, and they were able to clear a lot of balls out of the circle.
“They had a push at the end of the game, but our defense and new keeper Margaret D’Auria shut it down.”
D’Auria, a junior, is a rookie in the cage.
“The girls recruited her from lacrosse, and she never played in a field hockey game, and her first game was a shutout,” Whalin said. “She was lights out in the last few minutes when Wissahickon drew a few corners in a row, making six strong saves.”
Goalie Claire Tarzi also came up big for the Trojans, turning away 11 shots.
Wisshahickon coach Lucy Gil credited Sarah Cammarota and Sam Mullin for their outstanding defensive play.

QUAKERTOWN 5, PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 3
The Panthers displayed their offensive balance, using goals from five different players to earn the non-league win.
“All the forwards stepped up to the plate, and each one contributed,” coach Diane Molinaro said. “It was a fast-paced game by two well skilled teams.”
Contributing one goal each were Taylor Scheetz, Claudie Tangradi, Anne Thompson, Julia Ely and Becky Gerhart. Gerhart and Emma McLaughlin each had a pair of assists.
The Panthers took a tenuous 2-1 lead into halftime but exploded for three straight goals in the second half to go on top 5-1 before the Colonials connected for a pair of late goals.
“I decided to substitute some of my experienced players to give the younger players a chance and to improve our bench depth,” Molinaro said. “The girls all played well, but unfortunately, due to some miscommunication in the backfield, PW capitalized and scored two goals in quick succession.
“PW is a well-coached, talented team that kept the pressure on us for the entire 60 minutes.”
The Panthers held an advantage in shots (25-15) and corners (10-6).
“It was a close game in the first half,” PW coach Marianne Paparone said. “Quakertown came out strong after halftime and scored three goals in the first 15 minutes.
“(We) came to life with 10 minutes left for the final score.”
For the Colonials, Kennedy Reardon connected on a pair and Jess Dixon added a single goal.
Paparone credited the strong play of sweeper Grace McGuire, who had two defensive saves.

Plymouth Whitemarsh        1-2   3

UPPER MERION 5, POTTSGROVE 3
The Vikings opened up a 3-1 lead and never looked back on its way to the non-league win over the visiting Falcons.
“We just played really, really well in the first half,” coach Angie Yanocha said. “It was just good teamwork.
“It wasn’t necessarily that any particular group was dominating, but we were passing the ball really well. Our two major goals before the game were good communication and really working well together as a team. I always think our communication can improve, but the teamwork is what I think really gave us the win. There was good support all over the field.”
Maggie Noonan put the Vikings on the scoreboard, using an assist from Rella Staley. Yasmin Gant scored an unassisted goal, and Noonan scored her second goal of the game to send the Vikings into halftime with a 3-1 lead.
A pair of second half goals by Rella Staley – the first with an assist from Noonan and the second with a Mattie Barone assist – closed out the scoring for the Vikings.
Viking goalie Kate Foy turned away 15 shots in a strong performance.
“Tatum Thomas just had a really strong game and really controlled the midfield,” Yanocha said of her center back. “She really was very obvious throughout the game and really did a nice job. She just had an overall strong performance.”

Upper Merion           3-2   5

SOUDERTON 6, UPPER PERKIOMEN 2
The Indians’ offense put on a clinic, opening up a 3-2 halftime lead and then outscoring their visitors 3-0 in a dominant second half.
“Today's game was a total team effort,” coach Lauren Whiteside said. “We are very pleased with a big win in our season opener.  We were able to apply things we have been working hard on in preseason and turn it into a team win.  We set specific goals before the game, and we were able to accomplish almost all of them.
“Our offense really connected today and was able to see through Upper Perk's defense and get to the cage.  Our midfield made some adjustments at halftime, and we were able to make the connections between the defense and the forwards.  Our defense has been working very hard on specific strategies and being able to see that implemented today was a big step in the right direction.”
Erin Saybolt had a huge day, playing a role in five goals with three goals and two assists. Jessica Gabriel added the hat trick while Nina Disco and Ali Casciato each had an assist.
“Erin Saybolt and Jessie Gabriel were huge for us on offense,” Whiteside said. “They worked so well together, seeing each other up-field and splitting the defense.
“On defense, Emily Kramer played a great second half for us not allowing shots and getting the ball out hard to our midfield.  Courtney Kwiatkowski also played consistent solid defense for us and took charge in the middle of the field, stepping up to the ball and gaining several interceptions.”
The host Indians had a decided 15-7 advantage in shots while the visiting Tribe had nine corners to just three for Souderton. Souderton goalie Megan Mehaffey was credited with five saves in the win.
Upper Perk   2-0   2

NESHAMINY 1, OWEN J ROBERTS 0
Last year, Neshaminy and Owen J. Roberts were ranked 15th and 16th in the final District One AAA power rankings. Not a whole lot separated the two teams then, and not a whole lot separated them in Friday’s non-league opener.
Maria Palmieri turned an Elayna Curtin pass into a goal with 3:04 remaining in the first half, and that 1-0 lead held up the rest of the way as the Redskins eked out the win.

Early on, Emma Herb (Jenn DeLongis assist) scored at the 19:03 mark to put the Maidens on the scoreboard. That 1-0 lead held until Emily Sayer connected with the equalizer with 4:59 remaining in the opening half, and a goal by Hoover (Sayer assist) two minutes later sent Methacton into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
Brianna O’Donnell’s goal (Herb assist) just over three minutes into the second half knotted the scored 2-2. Methacton went back on top 3-2 after a Maddie Alderfer goal at the 16:28 mark, but just over a minute later, DeLongis answered with a goal for the Maidens, using a Herb assist. Neither team scored again until Hoover’s game winner in OT. Herb – who finished with a goal and two assists – had a hand in all three North Penn goals.
Methacton had an advantage in shots (23-13) and corners (12-5), but the Maidens stayed in the game, thanks to the 15-save effort of goalie Brynne Schoppe. Methacton’s Sarah Park was credited with eight saves.
