SOL Field Hockey Wrap (9-6-16)

Check out the results for SOL field hockey teams in action Tuesday.

PENNRIDGE 4, QUAKERTOWN 0
It was a performance that was an advertisement for the value of teamwork. The visiting Rams scored four goals – all four were assisted with four different players finding the cage.
“I’m super proud of the team play,” Pennridge coach Becky Spahr said. “Overall, our team play was really, really good.”
Sophomore Caitlyn Amsden got the ball rolling at the 21:11 mark of the opening half, using a crossing pass from teammate Kellie Drugotch. The Rams took a 2-0 lead midway through the opening half when – during corner play - freshman Macy Price turned a pass from Amsden into a goal and a 2-0 halftime lead.
Sydney Borneman (Emily Price assist) scored at the 16:48 mark of the second half, and the Rams put the finishing touches on the big win when Drugotch scored with 57 seconds remaining, using a Borneman assist.
The win avenged the Rams’ 4-2 loss to Quakertown in their SOL finale last season.
“We were going to go to playoffs if we won – we led at halftime 2-0,” said Spahr, whose team earned a playoff berth despite the loss. “They remember that obviously. Quakertown used to be in our conference, but we only play them once this year.
“My seniors  - I have 11 of them, and they know this is the last time they’ll play Quakertown, so they wanted to leave it all on the field.”
The Rams held a 22-2 advantage in shots over the Panthers, who were awarded a penalty stroke with 6:25 remaining. Their best chance at getting on the scoreboard was turned away by Ram goalie Mackenzie Bross.
Despite the outcome, Quakertown coach Diane Molinaro was pleased with the performance of her squad.
“It was a well played, hard fought contest against a strong opponent,” the Panthers’ coach said. “Pennridge is a fast and talented team.
“We prepared well and stayed with the game plan. I am proud of how well we stepped up to the challenge and continued to execute quality passes even though we were under intense pressure. We are still adjusting several defensive positions around some injured players and are working on best combinations.”
A duo of Pennridge goalies – senior Morgan Craighead and sophomore Amanda Tuley – combined for 14 saves.
“They have big shoes to fill since our starting goalie, Rylee Lawler, tore her ACL last spring,” Molinaro said. “I was impressed with how well both Amanda and Morgan are stepping up to the plate early in the season.”
Molinaro went on to acknowledge the play of several other players.
“Defensively, Mackenzie Hadfield made a positive impact in moving the ball from our defensive end to the attack by utilizing our outside mids -Kayla Hlywiak and Mel Olivieri,” she said. “Olivia Jackson was the calming force in our deep defense and helped guide freshman Halle Frederick on positioning.
“Offensively, we were able to generate some nice movement starting with Anna Thompson, who threaded nice passes to our forwards: Laura MacIntyre, Julia Ely and Mackenzie Adamson. We are not pleased with the score, but we are pleased with the tenacity and heart all the girls showed on the field today.”
For the Rams, Tuesday’s win came on the heels of a 2-0 loss to Perkiomen Valley on Friday.
“That was definitely a wake-up call,” Drugotch said. “We had an okay game, but we definitely could have played a lot stronger.
“We had the weekend off and a Monday morning practice, and we were just focusing on this game – it’s Quakertown. We have to come out strong. They beat us last year, and we have to make a mark and start our season fresh again.”
Quakertown (0-1) will open SOL American Conference play on the road at Wissahickon on Wednesday. Pennridge (1-1) will face Central Bucks South on Thursday at War Memorial Field (7 p.m.).

CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3, DOWNINGTOWN WEST 2 (OT)
The Patriots earned a dramatic win over a Whippet squad that was seeded sixth in last year’s District One AAA Tournament, using a Riley Donnelly goal during corner play with 4:23 remaining in OT to earn the impressive win.
“It was another great game for the CB East team,” said coach Michelle Finegan, whose team fell to Council Rock South in overtime on Friday.
The visiting Whippets took a 1-0 lead, but freshman Emma Donnelly – who is already proving to be an impact player – answered with the equalizer, using an assist from Abbey Butler. The Whippets took a 2-1 lead early in the second half, but midway through the half Cailey Lever banged home the rebound of a goalie save during corner play, knotting the score and setting the stage for overtime.
The Patriots held an advantage in shots (18-12) and corners (20-6) but couldn’t put the game away until late in overtime.
Coach Finegan lauded the strong defensive play of Sarah Sheehy. Riley Donnelly contributed a defensive save for the Patriots.
Central Bucks East (1-1) will open SOL Continental Conference play on Wednesday at North Penn.

While the Hawks collected 27 shots and 14 corners, the Hatters never generated any offense.
