SOL Girls' Basketball Wrap (1-10-24)

Check out the recaps for SOL girls’ basketball teams in action Wednesday.

SOL Patriot/Colonial crossover
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 65, HARRY S TRUMAN 23

Natalie Berndt came out of the gate on fire, burying three 3-pointers and scoring 12 points to lead the Patriots to a 23-8 lead after one quarter. They never looked back in a contest that saw 10 East players contribute scoring.
“It was nice to get off to a good start in the first quarter and get contributions from the entire lineup,” East coach Liz Potash said. “It was a total team effort.”
Berndt’s 14 points led a balanced Patriots attack, and Jess Lockwood also finished in double figures with 11. Haley Moran and Anna Barry – who connected on three 3s – both added nine points. Sydney Ralph contributed six points for the Patriots, who connected on 10 shots from beyond the arc.
For the Tigers, Yamazjiah Thomas led the way with eight points. Shylah McCleve and Terrion Hurt both added six points.
Central Bucks East (10-2, 6-2 SOL) will travel to Pennsbury for a crossover game Thursday, and Harry S Truman (1-11, 0-8) will host Central Bucks West on Saturday at 11 a.m.

SOL Liberty/Freedom crossover
UPPER DUBLIN 63, UPPER MORELAND 45

The visiting Cardinals put on an offensive clinic in the first half, torching the Golden Bears’ defense for 44 points. No one did more damage than sophomore Tamia Clark and junior Megan Ngo, who combined for 26 first-half points. Clark scored 14 points while Ngo connected on four 3-pointers in the second quarter.
“The girls played an incredibly efficient first half, especially offensively,” UD coach Morgan Funsten said. “We scored 44 points the first half.
“Megan Ngo was 4-for-4 in the second quarter from 3-point range, and Tamia (Clark) had all 14 of her points in the first half. They were switching defenses a lot, but our girls just did a great job of playing simple and taking what was there. We got some really nice balanced scoring in the first half, highlighted by Megan and Tamia.”
The two teams exchanged baskets in the second half.
“We went on a little run to open the third quarter and got up 28 early in the quarter and were still playing well,” Funsten said. “After that – a lot of credit to Upper Moreland. They fought back and I think they got it to 16 in the fourth quarter, but we were able to finish the game. It was a really nice balance by us.
“We’re excited to get the win against a team that can really shoot the ball. I thought they shot the ball well tonight. Mikel (Lancit) was great for them. She scored 25 points, so she had a great night. They have a nice collection of shooters, and I thought we did a great job of setting the pace early and getting up and down. We forced 18 turnovers and were able to create a lot of offense from our defense.”
Megan Ngo led the Cards with 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. She also had a pair of steals. Amy Ngo added 15 points, which included three 3-pointers. She also had five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Clark scored all 14 of her points in the first half. Bridget DiMartile added nine points, seven rebounds and three steals. Brighid Brady had six points.
Lancit’s 25 points included four 3-pointers. She scored 13 points in a 17-point second quarter. Holly Gohl added nine points, and Lilly Hansen had six points.
“Upper Dublin really came out shooting well in the first half and built a nice lead,” UM coach Josh Adelman said. “Their defense caused a lot of turnovers.  We settled down in the second half and played much better.
“Mikel Lancit was amazing, she hit four three-pointers and finished with a game high 25.  We never quit and will learn a lot from this game.  UD is very well coached and is 11-1 for a reason.”

An interesting subplot was Funsten coaching against former Upper Dublin boys’ coach Josh Adelman.
“Personally, for me, it was a little weird coaching against Josh Adelman,” the UD coach said. “I’m forever grateful for him giving me an opportunity. His first year as a varsity coach at Upper Dublin in 2005 was my first year coaching. I was his jayvee coach for seven years. We spent a lot of time together on the same sideline, and it was definitely weird going against him.”
Upper Dublin (12-1, 8-0 SOL) will host Cheltenham in a crossover game Friday, and Upper Moreland (8-4, 4-3) will travel to Central Bucks West on Thursday for a non-league game.

WILLIAM TENNENT 51, QUAKERTOWN 18
Avery Kocur scored 10 first-quarter points, propelling Tennent to a 22-8 lead over its shorthanded visitors on its way to the big win.
“It was a good team win tonight,” Tennent coach Laura Whitney said. “We had great scoring balance and I thought we moved the ball really well.
“Brittany does a great job with her girls.  I know she’s in a tough spot this year with low numbers and tonight she was even more shorthanded, but her girls played hard and never quit”
Kocur’s 17 points led the host Panthers with 15 of those points coming in a 38-point first half. Morgan Volz and Ella Mednick both finished with 10 points.
“Avery continues to put up impressive numbers offensively, but her defense was just as impressive tonight,” Whitney said. “I thought she was really active and did a great job of getting several deflections and steals.
“I was really happy to see Ella (Mednick) have a breakout game offensively.  She brings so much energy night in and night out and is always flying around on the defensive end, but I thought tonight she played with such poise and did a great job of taking advantage of what the defense was giving her. She’s been working so hard on her shot lately and it paid off tonight.”
Quakertown was minus several key players.

“One is out of town, two were unable to attend due to the reschedule of the game, and a few were sick,” Quakertown coach Brittany Bamford said. “I’m very proud of the efforts of the players that played tonight. Some of our younger players that normally do not get as many minutes contributed nicely, such as Maeve Henry and Alexa Seneca. Alexa has improved tremendously with her ball handling and has gained the confidence as the season has gone on, and Maeve has much improved her defense as well as being 2 for 3 offensively.”
Addyson Davis anchored the shorthanded Panthers, finishing with a double-double that included 10 points and 10 rebounds – seven offensive.
“Addyson Davis was our backbone tonight,” Bamford said. “Even though she was sick, she has got a double double.
“Mackenzie Clayton and Carli Maha also contributed with seven rebounds each and three deflections each.
“William Tennent moved the ball around very nicely on offense. Morgan Volz is so tough to defend as she's so strong in the paint for our posts to get in front as well as a knack for finding the rebounds. Avery Kocur is another key player that knocked down beautiful shots from behind the arc. Not sure what her shooting percentage was tonight, but it had to have been high. I also love her hustle defensively out on the court”.

William Tennent (6-7, 4-4 SOL) will host Hatboro-Horsham in a crossover game on Friday, and Quakertown (1-9, 1-6) will host Upper Moreland on Friday.
