CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 16, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 10
For those who thought the improved Patriots would catch the Bucks by surprise when the neighboring rivals did battle on Tuesday night, guess again.
“I did my research last night,” sophomore Jacqueline Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald did her prep work on Monday and then translated that into a five-goal, two-assist effort in West’s big win at War Memorial Field. Teammate Elena Romesburg added four goals.
“This was definitely a big win for us, especially knowing how close East’s game to Souderton was,” Fitzgerald said of the Patriots’ 11-10 loss to an Indian squad that defeated the Bucks by five in their most recent outing. “We knew East had gotten a lot better this year, and we are happy for their program.
“We always come out in this game really strong and with a lot of intensity, but the key for us is playing a full 50 minutes with intensity. I think today we met our goal.”
The Bucks came out of the gate on fire, sprinting to a 4-0 lead and – after the Patriots made it a 5-2 game – extending that lead to 9-2 on their way to an 11-4 halftime lead.
“Our goal was just the entire game to play consistent, no matter where the ball or rebounds went and just making sure we went after the ball with intensity and heart,” West coach Tara Schmucker said. “That was what we’ve been practicing.
“We’ve been working on things that would quantify intensity, so ground balls, draw controls – those are the things that we have really been trying to concentrate on. Most games are won by draw controls or ground balls.”
Back-to-back goals by East’s Marissa Glatt and Katt Miller to open the second half made it an 11-6 game, but Fitzgerald answered with a pair of goals to extend West’s lead to seven. The Bucks made it a 14-9 game after a goal by Glatt at the 6:29 mark, but Romesburg and Fitzgerald answered for the Bucks to all but ice the win.
Jane Savard and Sarah Gebre both added two goals and an assist for the Bucks (2-2, 2-1 SOL) while Meghan Tillger and Elle Ueland both had a goal and an assist. Paige Savard added a single goal to close out the scoring.
Senior Mary Kate Schwartz led the Patriots with four goals while Julia Norek added three, and Glatt, two goals. Nicole Delfini and Brooke Cataldo both contributed an assist, and despite seeing their team’s record drop to 0-3 in league play (1-3 overall), the players are enthusiastic about the upcoming season under first-year coach Dipi Bayha.

“It’s a completely different world,” Miller said. “We kind of feel like we just started. She’s literally teaching us the entire game.”
“Coach Bayha is changing us so much,” Schwartz added. “We’re so happy and proud to have her.”

NORTH PENN 13, SOUDERTON 12
In a classic battle between the neighboring rivals, the Maidens sprinted to an early 6-1 lead only to watch the Indians rally to go on top by one in the second half. The Maidens came back to earn the hard-fought win.
“We were up 6-1 at one point late in the first half, and we had a bad turnover with a minute left to play in the half,” coach Jami Wilus Behm said. “They scored two goals basically in the last minute to make it 6-3 at halftime, so it really turned the momentum to their favor going into halftime.
“In the second half, both teams were battling back and forth. We had a couple of turnovers and missed shots, and Souderton went up by one. We came back.”
Behm credited Hannah Young, who had a team-high five goals to go along with three assists, for turning momentum back in the Maidens’ favor with three consecutive goals.
“We’re still very young, and we made some mistakes on the field with our decision making, but they played really hard and kept fighting,” Behm said. “We were down one goal after being up by so much, but the team really showed a lot of character and leadership, especially Hannah Young on offense, kind of taking over and scoring those last three goals. I was proud of what they did.
“We definitely have a lot of work to do, but at this point in the season to be 3-0 and to have beaten some good teams – Souderton is much improved. They definitely battled the whole game, which we know they were going to, and to come out with a win on their turf field is really good for our young kids.”
Kaitlin Suzuki added four goals and one assist for the Maidens, and Lauren Green had the hat trick. Brittany Tyson contributed one goal, and Emily Schulze had one assist. Schulze led the defense with a game-high four ground balls. Gabby Didomizio had a game-high five draw controls.

“The girls were very excited,” coach Karen Grossi said. “They really all just worked well together.
“All of our attackers and midfielders played a role in scoring. The transition is something we’re working at, and it was on today. They had a lot of really nice transition up and down the field – long passes, short passes and back passes. The more they found themselves doing things correctly, the more they wanted to do it. They’re really starting to click with each other. The upperclassmen are treating our freshmen like they’ve been on the team forever, so they’re making them feel like part of the team, which is helping with that transition.”
