SPRINGFIELD 2, CHELTENHAM 1
The Spartans stunned the Panthers in their first league game after getting on the scoreboard eight minutes into the game when Brianna Littlepage capitalized off an Ellie Leitzel assist, and they never relinquished their lead.
“We lost to them twice last year,” said third year coach Suzette Wolfe. “We lost to them in our last game of the season by a lot.”
Jen Natale scored in the 30th minute to make sure the Spartans didn’t repeat their 2012 loss, but the Panther Tiana Han snuck in a goal with two minutes left to avoid the shutout.
“It was very hot and there were opportunities both ways,” said Wolfe.  “We dominated at certain times, but at the end, they were trying really hard to score and they did.”
Wolfe was particularly thrilled with the play of her three starting freshman - Molly Dugan (sweeper), Emily Giampietro (midfield) and Leitzel (attack). Wolfe also credited much of her team’s early success to Kaitlyn Gillinger who returned to Springfield after attending Gwynedd Mercy for the past two years.
“I am not expecting to win the whole league,” said Wolfe. “But I’d like get a few more wins than we did last year, at least half of our league games.”
The Spartans only won three league games last season, which was their first year back in the American Conference and now upped their record to 1-2 while the Panthers fell to 0-3.

UPPER MORELAND 1, PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 1 (2 OT)
The Colonials jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Nicole Abbott scored only three minutes into the game, but the Golden Bears quickly answered seven minutes later as Sydney Bachmayer finished a Morgan Valera corner kick to score the equalizer.
“Bachmayer is a freshman, (and) she has started all of our games so far,” said first year coach Lisa Benvenuto. “She continues to provide pressure as a forward for us.”
The Colonials and Bears continued their back and forth battle through regulation and two overtimes, and neither team found the goal again.
“It was probably a fair result,” said PW Steve Slack. “Both teams worked out for the full duration. We missed some opportunities we wish we could’ve got back.”
Both squads are young and inexperienced, starting only two or three seniors.
“Defensively, we played solid, but we are going to be a little down compared to seasons past,” said Slack who credited freshmen Carly Abbott and Jule Terraces with standout performances.
“We are definitely young as well,” said Benvenuto who was impressed by the play of her young keeper Kim Benge (13 saves) and midfielder Christina Kame.
“Kame plays on flank and is able to run the field well and give us opportunities offensively and help defensively as well because of her speed. Benge has been doing well, she’s been pretty confident out there,” said Benvenuto.
The Bears (0-0-1 SOL, 0-2-1 overall) face Upper Merion and Benvenuto hopes to continue their pattern of marked improvement with each game. The Colonials (0-0-1 SOL, 1-0-1 overall) have the daunting task of facing league opponents Cheltenham and Upper Dublin back-to-back on Thursday and Friday.

WISSAHICKON 0, UPPER DUBLIN 0 (2 OT)
The Trojans and Lady Cardinals battled in what coach Shannon Franke called “an action packed game” during their 100-minute season opener. Play was even between the longtime rivals, but Franke says her squad got into a groove of possession midway through the first half. The Trojans were able to get a couple of good looks on goal but weren’t able to put them in the net.
“The standout in the first half was junior Anna Chiodo-Ortiz,” said Franke. “Her speed, quick read, and pure grit was what we needed to keep UD at bay.”
Franke says the level of intensity picked up as the teams entered overtime play, but still neither team was able to score.
"Our backs are starting to really gel, led by Chiodo-Ortiz (junior and first year captain)," said Franke whose team is now 0-2-1.
"Both teams will rest well tonight, no doubt dreaming of the next time they meet,” said Franke, who team will have a rematch the Cards on Oct. 1 at Upper Dublin.
For now the Trojans will travel to Springfield on Thursday while the Cardinals (0-2-1) host Norristown.

Bri Colombo (Kiki Glatz assist) powered in a goal towards the end of the first half to give the Indians a lead over the Panthers as league play began. The Indians began to pull away in the second half as Michaela Finneyfrock registered the helper on a Jessica Clark goal, putting the Indians up 2-0. Finneyfrock then found the net herself (Rachel Ledbedder assist) to secure the Indians’ first win of the season.
“We started the season with an awful lot of injuries,” said head Coach Gina Lewing. “We had two back-to-back scrimmages that killed us, but we had almost the full roster back tonight.”
Lewing was especially pleased with the play of Madeline Attanasio and Anna Budney, who is one of the players returning to field after being injured.
“They are starting to come together as a full squad,” said Lewing. “Anytime you score more than a goal and don’t give up any, you are thrilled.”
