SOL Girls' Soccer Wrap (9-11-14)

Check out the results for SOL girls’ soccer teams in action Thursday.

National Conference

COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 1, NESHAMINY 0
Sophomore forward Kayla Robinson scored her fifth goal of the season at 50:12, with an assist from junior Tori Hill, for the only score as the Indians handed Neshaminy a second straight loss, including its first home loss to an SOL National opponent since Oct. 5, 2011.
North coach Wendell Beres said moving Robinson to forward, after the last preseason scrimmage, has worked out splendidly.
“(Robinson) played center-back in that game, because that was the lineup,” Beres said. “Immediately after that scrimmage, I told her she never will play center-back again, and she would be a forward—it’s a move that has paid off.”
Neshaminy came out quickly and ultimately outshot Council Rock North, 7-5. Neshaminy freshman goalkeeper Victoria Smith made four saves, and Council Rock North junior goalkeeper Jeri Belardo had six saves in earning a shutout.
Beyond goalkeeping, Beres credited senior defender Madison Attanasio with saving the match by making several defensive gems around the goal.
“Attanasio was an absolute (force) on the backline,” Beres said. “She cleared two (potential) goals off the goal line in the last 10 minutes of the game, and it’s difficult to be left out to dry, the way she was on a few occasions.”
The Indians (3-1-1, 2-1-1 SOL) will host Council Rock South on Monday afternoon.
Neshaminy (2-3, 2-2 SOL) next will travel to West Chester Rustin in a non-league match Saturday afternoon.
CR North 0-1 1
Neshaminy 0-0 0

Five different Pennsbury players scored, with Caroline Foley assisting on three scores.
Junior Jaydn Peto scored the game-winner in the seventh minute with an assist from senior Uche Onuoha. Pennsbury built its lead with goals from Abby Wick (34th minute) and Lizzy Kirk (38th minute, assisted by Foley and Riley Rudd).
In the second half, Pennsbury got goals from Meredith Webber (53rd minute from Foley) and Kelly Amador (70th minute from Foley).

Doherty opened the scoring in the 12th minute.
Senior midfielder Sarah Smith followed with a score in the 25th minute, and in the 39th minute, senior defender Kayla Ryan scored off a corner kick.
In the 78th minute, Doherty scored her second goal of the contest, also from a corner kick.
Bensalem head coach Lew Mladjen said Smith also had set up the last two goals by handling the corner-kick duties.
Mladjen noted that senior midfielder Paige Wendling controlled the pace of the game and added an assist on offense.
Junior center midfielder Gabby Nolan scored the lone goal for the Lady Ghosts.
The Owls (2-4, 1-2 SOL) will host Harry S Truman on Monday afternoon.

PENNRIDGE 2, SOUDERTON 0
Sophomore Kennedy Peace scored both goals, 10 minutes into the game and with about 10 minutes left in the first half, as the Rams remained undefeated.
Sophomore midfielder Katie Fischer set up Peace’s first score with a nifty lead pass. Peace got the other goal off a rebound, after sophomore Carissa Manero’s shot hit the crossbar.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlyn Moran earned her third straight shutout, largely from the efforts of Pennridge’s back four in minimizing scoring opportunities: Dani Meenan, Rachel Velez, Olivia Fernandez and Erin Stevenson.
The Indians (2-3, 2-2 SOL) will host West Chester Henderson in a non-league match Saturday morning.
Completing three games in four days this week, the Rams (3-0-2, 2-0-2 SOL) will travel to Cheltenham on Friday afternoon.

CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 1, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 1 (2 OT)
The Titans and Patriots battled to a deadlock after 100 minutes.
Through most of the second half, it appeared that Kate Schlotter’s goal, assisted by Morgan Walker in the 38th minute, might stand up for East. But South’s Megan Walker scored in the 76th minute.
The Titans (2-1-2, 1-1-2 SOL) host Harry S Truman on Saturday morning.
The Patriots (3-0-2, 2-0-2 SOL) will host a non-league match Saturday afternoon vs. Villa Joseph Marie.

If you came to War Memorial Field on Thursday night looking for an elegant game highlighted by sophisticated skill and consistent patience, then you may have left disappointed. With players on both rosters capable of artistic ball movement and creative combinations, the game seemed to offer a showcase for local soccer savvy, but those admirable traits were mostly hidden by the bone-crunching collisions of these athletes who redefined the phrase: "Go through the ball."
It was dramatic, exciting, horrific, and heroic, and the 1-1 draw after 100 minutes of combat was a fair, if not fantastic, way to finish.
Players on both teams distinguished themselves with their willingness to absorb contact and their subsequent strength to peel their exhausted bodies off the weathered War Memorial turf. And up until the closing seconds, players from both sides remained committed to going forward, fueled by their team spirit, the beautiful recklessness of determination, and the catapult speed of competition.
In the 36th minute, a departure from the physical play found Central Bucks East combining four one-touch passes together and providing a glimpse of the way they are capable of connecting play. Freshman Kate Slotter barely eluded the saving tackle Titan pursuit and scooped a finish past South keeper Sophia Boggs.
Disappointed but not deflated, the upstart Titans regrouped and reloaded at halftime and began to find partial seams in the Patriot guard.
Although neither side created many clean looks, by the 60th minute, it was CB South that appeared the more energetic side, and eventually the moderate pressure they were creating manifested into dangerous penetration.
As is often the case, senior Jessica Volm compelled the Titans forward with her ability to create space and advance play. South forward Corrine MacDonald pursued a lofted ball down the left flank and refused to duck from inevitable contact. Inspiration trumped fear and hesitation as the Titan sophomore attacker absorbed a kick in her core but twice emerged from an East challenge and earned a corner kick for her team. A a few drops of rainfall rose off the turf on the end of a Courtney Taylor service. With precise technique, Megan Walker headed home the tying goal.
Although both teams threatened in the other's defensive third, it was the defenders and goalkeepers who consistently rose to each new challenge. East back Paige Weiss stood her ground to thwart South's momentum, and her sacrifice inspired her squad forward.
Towards the end of regulation, the Patriots attacked with more urgency, desperate to free their catalyst Emma Loving; however, successively it was Titan defenders Krysta Reading and Margot Centofanti showing their mettle and disregard for safety. The exhausted players on both teams traded tackles, but South keeper Boggs had the punch of the night off an East corner, securing OT and a several more subsequent bruises.
Neither side applied consistent pressure during the back-to-back 10-minute overtime periods. However, with seconds remaining, it was East striker Emma Loving who broke down on the right-hand side, shielded off her defender with patience, and tried her boot at a near post shot. Although Boggs was up to the save, Loving once again relentlessly won the ball, turned the corner and went low and far post with the shot/cross. East's final look skidded across the Titans’ goalmouth and barely missed the far post, and as the ball was cleared to the corner, time ticked away; this classic battle ended in a 1-1 tie.
Neither team scored high in style points, but both absorbed the punishment and recklessness of high school soccer and elevated the crowd to an early season frenzy. It is the standard for a Continental clash, and although the frantic pace compromised aesthetics, it delivered on guts! For the Titans, the point they earned is less valuable than the confidence they gained while the Patriots navigated a challenging match and were able to salvage a point as well. Both teams endured and will continue to do battle on the battered turf of War Memorial.

QUAKERTOWN 2, HATBORO-HORSHAM 1 (OT)
Sophomore forward Katie Crouthamel scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the first overtime Thursday afternoon to lift the Panthers to their first victory of the season.
In overtime, senior forward Linzi Wolfe beat two players down the left side and found Crouthamel open in the middle for an assist 4 minutes, 10 seconds into the first overtime.
Freshman Becah Fox got the assist on Crouthamel’s first goal.
Sophomore midfielders Lauren Pursel and Julia Taylor led the defense for Quakertown.
Senior midfielder Rachel Kaplan scored the Hatters’ only goal on a shot from about 25 yards away, and senior Sara Kemp played an outstanding game as goalkeeper.
Hatboro-Horsham also got strong midfielder performances from freshman Erica Paluszak — on her birthday — and junior Marissa Portelli.
The match had been rescheduled from the evening because the new artificial surface in Quakertown’s renovated stadium still was being fine-tuned, so the match was played at the Quakertown Soccer Club fields.
Quakertown head coach Mike Koch said that the squad, now featuring eight freshmen and sophomore starters after replacing six starters who graduated, has managed the logistical issues associated with this renovation.
“We’ve had four games that we had to reschedule or play back-to-back because of this, and I’m just glad for my players that they got some type of reward (a win),” Koch said. “I’ve been coaching for 22 years, and this is one of the hardest-working, if not the hardest-working team that I’ve ever had the pleasure to coach.”
Hatboro-Horsham head coach Ben Winderman said this game was the third straight loss to Quakertown in extra time, and Wolfe has played a key role.
“(Wolfe) either has scored the winning goal or had the assist in every one of those games,” the Hatters’ coach said. “She leads by example.”
Winderman added that as several Hatters return from injury, he believes the team will be stronger the second half of the season and can make a late run.
The Hatters (2-4, 0-4 SOL) will travel to Mount St. Joseph Academy for a non-league matchup Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers (1-3-1, 1-2-1 SOL) will travel to War Memorial Field on Monday afternoon to face Central Bucks East.

West sophomore forward Mary Kate Vinkler had tied the contest at 1 with a goal in the 33rd minute.
The Maidens struck first in the 15th minute, as junior forward Allison Williams scored with an assist from junior midfielder Hannah Alexander.
Neither goalkeeper faced too many scoring opportunities, as West senior Grace Bendon recorded two saves, and North Penn senior Laura Leonard registered four saves.
North Penn head coach Jim Dehner called the contest a “classic CB West-North Penn game where everything was earned by both teams.”
Playing the last of three road games in four days Friday afternoon, the Bucks (4-1-1, 2-1-1 SOL) will travel to Boyertown for a non-league match.
Next for the Maidens (3-2, 2-2 SOL), they will host a non-league matchup Saturday morning against Methacton.

A goal by Emily Vervilied (Alyssa Ryan) gave the Trojans a 3-0 lead, and they sealed the win when Maddie Elwell turned a through ball by Talia Abrahams into a breakaway goal.
