Class 4A
#2 COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 3, #7 BISHOP SHANAHAN 1

The Golden Hawks find themselves in elite company.

As a result of Saturday’s win over Bishop Shanahan, the Hawks are one of four District 1 4A teams still standing and have earned a spot in the district semifinals. It is believed to be their first trip to the district semis since 2005. They also punched their ticket to the state tournament.

“I know this achievement means a lot to my girls,” Rock South coach Carrie Allen said. “They were really hungry to prove they could get this far after getting upset early in the playoffs last year.”

Last year, Rock South entered the district tournament as the fourth seed but – after a first round bye - fell to Strath Haven in the second round.

“My players are good friends on and off the court and their teamwork has really gotten them this far,” Allen said. “We have been undersized against many of our better opponents this year, and their determination to not let the ball drop and cover for each other has really allowed them to stay competitive against a lot of teams.”

Saturday’s win over Bishop Shanahan erased memories of last year’s disappointment.

The trio of Olivia De Saro (14 kills, 1 ace, 5 digs, 3 blocks), Edan Kauer (11 kills, 1 ace, 17 digs) and Nala Kauer (11 kills, 1 ace, 2 digs) led a balanced Golden Hawk attack. Leading the Hawks’ tenacious defense was Cadence Palmer, who had a team-high 26 digs as well as one service ace. Setters Ashllyn Dinan (28 assists, 9 digs) and Rachel Khelmer (11 assists, 2 digs) combined for 39 assists.

Cassidy Melnick added nine digs and, according to Allen, contributed great defense and hustle. The Rock South coach credited Halle Wilson for her strong service game, and Yana Kotlyarenko, who had one kill, also provided great hustle.

Also contributing for the Golden Hawks were Rachael Buchnick (2 kills, 1 block) and Kristina Shumakov (3 kills).

Council Rock South (18-2, 12-0 SOL) will host #2 Haverford in a District 1 4A semifinal match on Monday at 5 p.m.
