SOL Girls' Volleyball Wrap (9-17-13)

Check out the results for SOL volleyball teams in action this week.

National Conference

PENNSBURY 3, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 1 (25-22, 29-27, 21-25, 25-19)
The perennial SOL powers found themselves locked in another classic war.
“It was the typical battle between our two schools, which seems to be the theme for years,” coach Michael Falter said. “We trailed in every single game.
“North actually went on a 9-0 run to start the match. We played Mount St. Joseph on Monday and did the same thing, but they settled in. In the second game, we were down 17-11 and we came back to win. In the fourth game, we were behind 14-9 and came back to win.
“They never panicked. They settled in and showed great perseverance and mental toughness and chipped away and played disciplined volleyball, which is what I’ve been asking them to do all year.”
Cara Reilly finished with 19 kills while Lauren Bransfield added 10 and Taylor McCartney, eight kills.
“Cara Reilly came up really big in the end when we needed to put the ball away,” Falter said. “I told Kelsey (Ongradi), my setter, ‘Just give her the ball until they stop her.’ Percentage-wise she was putting the ball away, but this was definitely a team win.”
Ava Patterson and McCartney each had four aces. Defensively, Dagny Gould led the way with 19 kills while Patterson added 14 digs while Kelsey Ongradi had nine. McCartney had eight digs.
“We played amazing defense,” Falter said. “It’s the best defense have played all year, by far.
“Dagny Gould, who’s our sophomore libero – for being a sophomore and stepping into a starting role, she is calm. She never gets fazed by anything. Ava Patterson reads the ball really well and has a good feel for the court.
“If it were not for our scrappy defense and relentless pursuit of the ball, I don’t believe we would’ve been able to fight back from some of those deficits. For the most part, we are a young team in terms of starting experience. It’s nice to see that we are making progress, showing growth and playing more like a team every match.”
The two teams will meet in a rematch on Oct. 8 at Council Rock North.
“You never know because Tennent is playing well, but that could be for the league title or a share of the league title,” Falter said.

MOUNT ST JOSEPH ACADEMY 3, PENNSBURY 2 (25-10, 25-21, 20-25, 22-25, 15-9)
In a tightly contested match of the district powers, the Magic eked out the five-set win on their home court.
“We came out extremely flat in the first game – not really sure why for a big match like that,” coach Michael Falter said. “After dropping the first game 25-10, I expected them to come out a little more fired up in the second game, but that was not the case.
“We finally settled in and started to make a run towards the end of the second game, which gave us momentum going into the third despite the loss. We made some adjustments defensively and were able to take the third and fourth games. Unfortunately, a slow start in the fifth game was something we could not overcome. Cara Reilly and Ava Patterson both had really good matches and were able to come up with some big kills at crucial times.”

Defensively, Dagny Gould led the Falcons with 16 digs while Reilly added nine and Patterson, five. Reilly (13 kills) and Patterson (15 kills) also led the Falcons at the net. Taylor McCartney had 11 kills. Patterson also had four aces, and Gould added three.

Thursday, September 12
CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 3, PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 1 (21-25, 25-13, 25-19)
The Titans dropped the first set of Thursday’s non-league match but came back strong, winning the next three.
“They put a lot of pressure on us with their serves, but we rallied back from being down and came on strong,” South coach Ulana Keer said. “The second game we pushed with our serves, and Jax Babezki served out 10 points before PW regrouped from our attack.
“Caitlyn McCrory served well tonight, serving for 33 attempts and having a team high of 10 kills in games three and four.
“Jackie Haffey and Babezki blocked their attack with a team high of eight and seven respectively while our back row of Larissa Keer, Cait McCrory and Cecilia Miller dug for 25 assists that resulted in kills.
“Lindsey Edling, Madi Conroy set Miller and Danilowicz for a consistent attack.”
