SOL Girls' Volleyball Wrap (9-7-16)

Check out the results for SOL girls’ volleyball teams in action Wednesday.

CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 3, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 1 (25-14, 15-25, 25-17, 25-18)
The Titans rebounded from a disappointing five-set loss to Pennsbury last Friday to defeat the defending Continental Conference champion Patriots.
“I said on Friday that my girls were frustrated,” said South coach Kurt Godrey, whose team led 2-0 in the match against the Falcons. “Last night at practice, Morgan McCrory, our captain and libero, said that she thought about that loss every five minutes over the weekend and didn’t want to feel like that again for the rest of the season.
“It was just an all-around great effort in a big inter-district rivalry game, so we’re very proud. It’s just a good way to start the week.
McCrory led the Titans’ defense with 26 digs, four aces and one assist.
“She was not only a stat leader tonight but an emotional leader all night long – calling balls out, and she served really well,” Godfrey said. “She served the ball 18 times and got 12 points. She did really, really well for us.”
Megan Manderson had another big night for the Titans, finishing with three aces, 15 kills and 24 digs. Sydney Hauser had five blocks and three kills at the middle of the net, and Erica Werner had 13 assists and 12 digs. Kelly Danyluck had three aces, five kills, 16 assists and 11 digs.
“It was a complete team effort tonight,” Godfrey said. “I know we had some issues with Pennsbury on Friday night – I didn’t think we played very strong defense, and I didn’t think we served aggressive enough.
“Tonight our practice plan worked – we served incredibly aggressive tonight, and our defense was 10 times better tonight than it was on Friday, and it showed.”
For the Patriots, Devon Hall (nine kills, 12 digs) and Jenn Krzeminski (eight kills, six aces) led the attack. Emily Lunny had 16 assists, and Morgan Beakley had 25 digs and four aces.
“East played tough,” Godfrey said. “The score doesn’t reflect how close it was and what a rivalry it is.

“A lot of these girls all know each other from club and from friendships and whatever, and for us to be able to pull out a win was just great. We have Lansdale Catholic (Thursday). William Tennent on Friday and Truman on Monday, so our next practice isn’t until Tuesday of next week. It was just really good for our momentum and our attitude going into the rest of the week.”

HATBORO-HORSHAM 3, CHELTENHAM 0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-16)
Coach Jon Young acknowledged that the Lady Panthers have improved dramatically over past years, especially defensively, but that didn’t prevent the Hatters from earning the sweep.
The Hatters’ offense was led by Holly Owen with 12 kills on 20 attempts (.600 kill percentage). She also had five digs, one block and eight aces. Another offensive threat was Katerina Yankanich with eight kills on 14 attempts (.571) to go along with seven digs. Victoria Rapak controlled the middle of the net with four kills on six attacks. Allison Laucella led the defense with 11 digs and four aces.
Hatboro-Horsham will face Cardinal O’Hara in a non-league match Thursday and conference rival Upper Dublin on Friday.

UPPER DUBLIN 3, NORTH PENN 1 (23-25, 25-10, 25-23, 25-15)
The Knights won the first game of Wednesday’s match, but the Flying Cardinals rallied to win the next three.
“(We) definitely rolled into game one with a lot of confidence and discipline and took the game, fighting back and forth with three and four-point runs by both teams to make for a close game right off the bat,” North Penn coach Brian Harvey said. “Serving again was key to pulling out certain players in rotations.
“Defense constantly plays a role in winning key games. We are definitely an exciting team to watch. Upper Dublin played a really strong match, but resilience of fundamentals is who controlled the game. We might have played down, but we always find a way to stand back up game after game.”
For the Cardinals, Jenny McAneney (16 kills, three aces, one block, seven digs) and Maggie Weglos (13 ills, 16 digs, eight aces) turned in huge efforts. Setter Bryn Steck had 17 assists, 14 digs, three kills and two aces. Josie Barrett let the defense with 19 digs to go along with one ace and one assist. Jackie McMenamin (three aces, seven digs), Catie Yoast (four kills, one block, one dig) and Layne Morgan (three kills, four blocks, two digs) also made important contributions.

(We) were able to regain control of our pass and serve game and took the second set. The last two sets were a lot closer, and we definitely had to work for the win.”
For the Knights, setter Alycia Powers had 33 assists to go along with six digs, one ace and one block. The Bucks defeated a gutsy Panther squad that eked out a win in the second set.
“We lost another hard-fought match,” Tennent coach Brian Bassler said. “Our girls are doing a lot of things well and are pushing themselves and each other.
“I give West a ton of credit for their service game and smart play. Lots of great rallies in this one.”
Katie Hudson led the Bucks with 11 kills, 19 digs, two blocks and one ace. Setter Kayla King had 37 assists, 25 digs, four kills and two aces in a standout effort. Kailey Prall led the defense with 30 digs to go along with three aces.
