SOL PIAA Class AAA Swimming Wrap (3-17-16)

Upper Dublin senior Michael Jensen picked up his second gold medal and was named the Outstanding Swimmer at the PIAA Class AAA swimming championships Thursday. UD’s Wyatt Amdor also won gold.

LEWISBURG Michael Jensen continued his dominance.

The Upper Dublin senior won the 100-yard freestyle in 42.69 at Thursday’s conclusion of the PIAA Class AAA boys swimming championships, held at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.

He was named the Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet.

Jensen - who has committed to continue his career at the University of California – Berkeley - came close to the national federation and PIAA record of 42.34 set by Hershey’s David Nolan in 2011.

“Getting swimmer of the meet isn’t something I think about,” Jensen said. “I just want to come out here and swim my races.”

Teammate Wyatt Amdor won the 100 breaststroke (54.82).

“It’s unbelievable,” said Amdor, who will continue his career at the University of Kentucky. “Our team did an outstanding job the whole meet. I can’t really describe how I feel. It hasn’t sunk in yet.

“What we have going on at Upper Dublin is that it’s not just about the studs. It’s about each and every one of us supporting each other as a family. I think that really explains how we did.

“It’s nice to get that individual gold medal. It wasn’t my best time, but I’ll take a gold medal any time. This is a great way to finish off the year.”

The Cardinals capped the meet with an impressive victory in the 400 freestyle relay in a meet record time of 2:59.58. Leyens, Alex Flynn, Amdor and Jensen were the foursome.

They topped the previous meet record of 3:00.23 also set by Upper Dublin in 2013 by Michael Jensen, Ian Flynn, Eric Jensen and Robert Bantley.

“I’m very happy with our relay time,” Jensen said. “That has been a goal of mine since freshman year when we went 3:00.2 and you’ve never seen four guys swim that time and be so disappointed. I’ve waited three years for this swim and I’m so excited.”

Leyens earned the fourth place medal in the 500 freestyle (4:31.76).

Also for Upper Dublin, Flynn was 11th in the 100 freestyle (46.68), Jake Easton was 11th in the 100 breaststroke (58.07) and Devon Polakwas 27th in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.16).

The Cardinals finished second in boys’ team scoring with 207 points. La Salle was the team champion (252).

“That’s the best we’ve ever done and it’s an awesome way to finish the year,” Jensen said.

Cristian Musterait of Souderton was fourth in the 100 freestyle (44.91). He also anchored the 400 freestyle relay for Spencer Nice, Storm Krader and Brendon Loux, which finished ninth (3:10.34).

Nice was 15th in the 100 breaststroke (58.46) and Ryan Witoslawski was 23rd in the 100 breaststroke (59.53) to round out the day for Souderton.

The Indians finished in a tie for eighth place in team scoring with Conestoga. Both teams had 87 points.

Hatboro-Horsham’s Andy Thomas finished sixth in the 100 freestyle (46.13). He was joined by teammates Stuart Sumner, John Scully and Tim McPoyle for a 12th place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:11.85).

Wissahickon’s Doug Boehme was sixth in the 500 freestyle (4:34.49) while teammate Jeff Beyer finished 13th in the same event (4:38.95).

North Penn’s Corey Smith was sixth in the 100 backstroke (50.44). A senior, it was the final swim of his high school career.

“Looking back on my progression I came in really slow as a freshman and it’s great just seeing the growth,” he said.

Aiden Daly was ninth in the 500 freestyle (4:34.30) and Harrison Friel finished 13th in the 100 breaststroke (58.29) for the Knights.

Daly, Ryan Yocum, Ryan Hartmann and Smith were 18th in the 400 freestyle relay (3:13.98) for North Penn.

Brad Johnson of Central Bucks West finished 10th in the 100 breaststroke (57.60).

Neshaminy’s David Kneiss was tied for 19th in the 100 freestyle with Stephen Marn of McDowell (47.60).

Collin Hanlon of Pennsbury finished 20th in the 500 freestyle (4:43.31).
