2016 PIAA AAA STATE WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

GOLDEN HAWKS AND RAMS LEAD THE WAY FOR SOL AFTER DAY ONE

By Glenn Kaiser

HERSHEY - Council Rock South and Pennridge find themselves in the top ten in the team scoring after Thursday’s action in the Giant Center.  The Golden Hawks currently stand in fifth place and Pennridge in 8th place.  Bethlehem Catholic has the lead followed by Mifflin County (2nd), Belle Vernon (3rd), and Nazareth (4th).  CR South moved on four wrestlers to the quarterfinals in Zack Trampe (132), Riley Palmer (138), Lucas Martoccio (145), and Joe Doyle (195).  The Ridge sports has three wrestlers in the quarters with Matt Parker (113), Josh Stillings (160), and Kyle Gentile (182).

Harry S Truman’s Dustin Stone joins Martoccio in the 145-pound quarterfinals; if both win, they would face each other in the bottom half semifinal bout.  Stone appeared to be back in prime form with a 9-0 major-decision over Cal Reichert (Cumberland Valley), while Martoccio continues to work hard as he earned a 3-1 decision over Jake Hartman from Shaler.  Josh Shalinsky (CR North) won a 4-1 decision over Cade Wilson (Nazareth) and will wrestle Jared Siegrist (Manheim Central) in the quarters.

Matt Parker will battle perhaps the number one wrestler in the nation, Gage Curry (North Hills), who stands at 40-0 in the top of the 113-pound bracket.  This match should have been much later in the tournament, but it will certainly be one of the key matches this afternoon in Hershey.  Zack Trampe (CRS) will look to move on to the 132-pound semis as he will grapple with Joe Blummer (Kiski Area) who advanced via a forfeit from Parkland’s Jacob Lizak.  Trampe’s teammate Riley Palmer gets Shaun Wilson from Waynesburg in his quarterfinal bout.

Josh Stillings (Pennridge) appeared to be hurting after his first round bout with Jonah Barley (Penn Manor) at 160, winning 9-6.  He will grapple undefeated Kaleb Young (Punxsutawney) in quarterfinal action.  Kyle Gentile, like fellow Ram Matt Parker, will have a championship-like bout with Jake Woodley from North Allegheny at 182 pounds.  Woodley and Gentile are ranked #1 and #2 respectively by PA Power Rankings.  CR South’s Joe Doyle pinned his way to the quarterfinals and will face Eli Grape (Upper St. Clair) this afternoon.

SOL wrestlers still alive in the consolation brackets include Aidan Burke (CRN) at 113, Gunnar Fuss (Truman) wrestled his way back into the tourney last night with a 6-5 win over Jersey Shore’s Hunter Zondory at 120, Cary Palmer (CRS) and Kordell Rush (Pennridge) are down below at 126.  Rush needed a win over Bryce Bennent (Phillisburg-Osceola) 5-0 in the wrestle backs last night.  North Penn’s Ryan Vulakh advanced with a win over District One’s Nick Puliti (Garnet Valley), securing a major decision 9-1.  Only Dylan Schwartz (CRS) is alive at 152 as both Tanner Sieslove (Quakertown) and Colin Shannon (NP) were eliminated last night.  Big man Gavin Caroff (Q-town) is still wrestling at 220 after dropping his opening match 5-2 to Garrett Zobel (LaSalle) as is Neshaminy’s Bruce Graeber at 285, as he needed a wrestle back win over Connellsville Louis Mauro.  Graeber decked Mauro in 2:17 after dropping his first round match to Issac Reid (Kiski) 2-1 in an ultimate ride out in overtime.

With the level of wrestling expected to turn up a notch or two this afternoon, all the SOL remaining wrestlers must stay on top of their games to advance and medal.  The PIAA made some minor chances to assist fans, coaches, and wrestlers to enhance the tournament after last year’s debacle with the origin of the 20-man brackets.  Wrestlers were still assigned mats, but were periodically announced to their mats.  And most importantly bout numbers were on the score clocks to help all follow the action on six mats.
