WARWICK -- Neshaminy's offense got going against Wilson in the "nick" of time.
That is, a couple of Nicks got the Redskins going and then finished off the Bulldogs to give Neshaminy a 6-5 win in a play-in game for the Flyers Cup Monday night at Warwick Ice Arena.
First, Nick Verdi scored with 59 seconds left in the second period to cut the Wilson lead to 4-2. Then, Nick Sabatini scored the first goal of the third period and finally finished off the scoring with 2:30 remaining in the game to complete the Redskins' stirring comeback.
"The comeback started in the second period," Verdi, the team captain, said. "We got a goal and then got two more in the third period and the confidence just started growing."
And it kept on growing. After Verdi's goal, Sabatini and Eric Graham found the net to tie the score at 4-4.
Wilson came right back with a power play goal from Jimmy McDonald for a 5-4 lead. But then Ian Dixon knotted the score again and Sabatini broke the tie.
"I crashed the net, skating hard," Sabatini said of his game-winner. "It felt great."
That must have been a great pep talk coach Dan VanBuskirk gave between the second and third periods.
"He said, 'Boys, I know you can do it,'" Sabatini said. "You guys did it all year.
"You're here for a reason. Skate hard.'  That's about it."
Not quite as VanBuskirk remembers it, however.
"I told them that this was their opportunity," the Redskins’ coach said. "'You're going to let someone take something from you?
"'Go out there and grab this opportunity. We either roll over now or go out and take what is ours.'"
Whatever was said, it must have worked because the Redskins came out in the third period and played inspired hockey. They outshot Wilson 15-7 and outscored the Bulldogs 4-1.
And Neshaminy continued to do what it has done all year, take the body.
"That was another key, playing the body," Sabatini said. "They were scared of us. We took advantage of that."
Verdi knew the advantage the Redskins' tough checking gave them.
"They looked small, so we needed the body to try and intimidate them as much as we can," he explained. "We did what we could to get the puck from them."
Prior to Verdi's goal and the big third period, however, it appeared that Neshaminy was in trouble. Wilson seemed to be quicker to the puck and looked to be outplaying the Redskins.
Dixon got Neshaminy on the scoreboard first, hitting the nets with only 1:45 gone in the first period. Things looked good for the 'Skins.
That lead didn't last long, though. Thirty-six seconds later, Michael Simmerman beat Neshaminy goalie Matt Sheley on the power play to tie the score and followed that at the 7:56 mark with another power play tally and a 2-1 lead.
That margin grew in the second period. Josh Nagle scored with 4:48 gone in the period and Griffin Bunn added to the lead at the 8:32 mark, making it 4-1.
Then Verdi scored his goal and the comeback was on track. Sixteen minutes and 59 seconds later, Neshaminy was into the first round of the Flyers Cup competition.
The Redskins will meet a familiar opponent in their next game. They will play Souderton, a team that beat them 11-1 in the Suburban High School Hockey League playoffs one week ago.
"Souderton is a really strong team," VanBuskirk said, "and we're going to give it everything we have and hope we give them a really good game and hopefully come out on the right side of that one."
Verdi smiled when told of his team's next foe. He knows what Neshaminy will have to do against the Indians.
"Both times we played them, we had a strong first period," he said. "We came out with a lot of intensity. We just have to keep up that intensity throughout the whole game."
Oh, yes, there is also a revenge factor.
"Absolutely," said VanBuskirk when asked about revenge. "That was a tough loss for everybody.
"We checked our pride in that game. Everybody will be more ready and come out and play a complete game this game."
Verdi couldn't agree more.
"Definitely, some revenge (is) involved," he said. "We owe them a good game and, for Flyers Cup purposes, that's when we have to bring it."
The two teams will meet at Hatfield Ice on Wednesday at 7:20 p.m.

#15 Council Rock North 4, #18 Manheim Township 3 (2 OTs)
The Indians rallied from a 2-1 deficit after two periods to send the game into overtime. Justin Fricke scored an unassisted goal 1:26 into the second overtime to give the Indians the dramatic win.
Kyle McQuillan kept the Indians in the game early, turning away all eight shots he faced in the first period. The Indians, meanwhile, did not so much as manage a shot as the two teams battled to a scoreless tie after one period.
Colton Snow put the Indians on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal 1:43 into the second period. Manheim Township answered with back-to-back goals to go on top 2-1. Sam Kroh (Mark Tosti/Tristan Wieczorek assists) and Colton Snow scored in a two-minute span early in the third period to put the Indians on top 3-2, but Manheim Townshihp’s Ethan Beuchamp knotted the score, setting the stage for OT.
Manheim Township held a 39-29 advantage in shots, but McQuillan’s 36-save effort was the difference in the game.

Neither team scored in the opening period, and the Whippets took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Chris Fabry early in the second period. That lead held until Upper Moreland’s Colton Arizini (Nick Park assist) connected on a power play goal eight seconds into the final period. Jordin Holmes (Sean Lloyd assist) scored less than a minute later to put the Golden Bears on top 2-1, but the Whippets answered with a goal by Alec Higgins. Arizini connected on his second goal of the period, this one with assists from Lloyd and Park to put the Golden Bears on top 3-2 11:38 into the period. Matt Iehle (Arizini assist) added an insurance goal three minutes later for the 4-2 final.

#14 Lansdale Catholic 7, #3 Garnet Valley 5
The Crusaders pulled off the biggest upset in Monday’s play-in round, rallying from an early 3-1 deficit to earn the win over third-seeded Garnet Valley. Andrew Hart (three goals, two assists) and Anthony Valerio (one goal, three assists) led LC with five and four-point nights respectively. Mike Longhitano (one goal, two assists) added three points.
The Jaguars led 2-0 before Hart (Valerio assist) put the Crusaders on the scoreboard. It was a 3-1 game after one period, but back-to-back goals by John Volpe, the first with a Longhitano assist and the second with assists from Joe Nace and Alex Slowick, evened the scored less than four minutes into the second period. A goal by Hart (Longhitano/Valerio assists) gave the Crusaders a 4-3 lead 4:51 into the period only to watch the Jaguars score the equalizer, sending the teams into the final period deadlocked 4-4.
A Hart goal gave the Crusaders a short-lived lead as the Jaguars answered with a goal two minutes later, but goals by Valerio and Longhitano, both with Hart assists, gave LC a lead it would not lose.
The Crusaders held a 40-32 advantage in shots, which included a second period that saw them outshoot the Jags 18-9. LC’s Helen Cooney was credited with 27 saves in goal.

East took a 2-0 lead after one period and stretched that lead to 3-0 before Wissahickon’s Brandon Rosoff (Luke Honorowski) scored 5:58 into the second period. That would be the Trojans’ last hurrah as East closed it out with four unanswered goals.
The Trojans held a 26-25 edge in shots, an advantage that was negated by the 25-save effort of East goalie Tyler Percival.
