Souderton Indians

Souderton head coach Matt Montagnaand his Indians (4-7-0, 8) have come a very long way this season after the Big Red finished the 2014-2015 season with an 0-17 record.

“Coming from where we were to where we are now is amazing,” said Montagna.  “The team this year is the same team we had last year – and it will be the same team we will have next year.

“This team has learned our motto ‘Hate Losing’ – and this year is all part of the process of building a winning team,” added Montagna.  “We have 12 or 13 guys who have learned what it takes to compete – we don’t back down to anyone.

“We are in a league with teams like CB South, CB West, and North Penn and playing them twice each can get ugly,” continued Montagna.  “Sometimes you can show improvement without getting wins.”

Offensively, Souderton has shown improvement behind a trio of underclassmen that includes junior Gabe Evans, junior Tyler Johnson, and sophomore Joshua Reeves.

“Gabe has scored some big goals for us and has a nose for the puck,” said Montagna.  “Tyler can fire the puck and is very good around the net, and Joshua might be our most talented player.”

Defensively the Indians rely on junior defenseman Thomas Tierney and a pair of young goaltenders – junior Dawson Anders and sophomore Joshua Smith.

“Thomas has been our most solid defender all year,” said Montagna.  “And both Dawson and Joshua have spilt the goaltending and have done a nice job.”

Souderton will get a rematch with CB West this week.

“They beat us with two minutes left in the game the last time,” said Montagna as the Bucks secured a 4-2 win with an empty net goal.  “They are going to be another good test for us.”

SHSHL National Conference ‘Snapshot
William Tennent Panthers

William Tennent head coach Nick D’Aurizoand his Panthers (9-1-0, 18) have remained on top of the SHSHL National Conference standings the entire season.

“We continue to find ways to win games,” said D’Aurizo.  “We are a team that wins games in streaks – and we hope that we can keep it up at the end of the season.

“We want to be a hot team as we go into the playoffs,” added D’Aurizo.  “We have a couple of big games this week.”

William Tennent will face National Conference foe Neshaminy (3-7-1, 7) on Tuesday and will close the week with a crossover game against Continental Conference power Central Bucks West (9-1-0, 18) on Friday.

“Central Bucks West is one of those teams that you circle on the calendar,” said D’Aurizo.  “CB West, CB South, and North Penn are the teams that you can measure where you are in terms of competing with the best.

“It is one of those benchmark games in the (regular) season that gets you ready for the playoffs,” continued D’Aurizo.  “The guys will be ready to go.”

Those guys include senior Alec Dugan, senior Charlie Feeney, and sophomore goaltenders Eric Lineman and Bryan Davis.

“Alec has shown up big for us every game this year and is our leading scorer,” said D’Aurizo.  “And Charlie is our captain and is a rock on defense.

“Eric and Bryan are both young but are mature beyond their years,” added D’Aurizo.  “Both of them have gotten better since the beginning of the season.”

SHSHL American Conference ‘Snapshot’

Council Rock North head coach Eric Tye and his Indians (9-1-1, 19) control their own championship fate as the SHSHL American Conference regular season comes to a close.

“We’re only a point behind Truman (10-0-0, 20) and we have two games left with them,” said Tye.  “We would have to beat them twice to be in first place – and they beat us the first time.

“Our goaltender (Chase Arcangelo) never played goalie and practiced for about a whole hour before the game,” added Tye of his novice net minder.  “Now he has almost a whole season under his belt – and he has improved quite a bit since then.”

The first Rock North-Truman game was scheduled to be played last Friday – but the Blizzard of 2016 forced a postponement.  There has been no date set for the rematch of the conference contenders.

“Our players really want to win those games with Truman,” said Tye.  “We are on a roll right now with seven straight wins, and Truman is the team we have to beat.”

CR North has made the move from ‘AA’ to ‘A’ this season – and the new location for the Indians has been a good one.

“We had the lowest enrollment of any school in ‘AA’,” said Tye.  “We would have had a hard time competing with the best teams in ‘AA’, and the move was best for the program.

“I don’t see us moving back to ‘AA’ next year,” added Tye.  “We have five or six really skilled guys – and this is where we need to be right now.”
