Pennridge Rams

Pennridge (2-5) will begin its fight to move up the conference standings with the addition of sophomore Troy Crosson to the lineup.

“Troy is our best player and he was out the last four weeks with an injury,” said Pennridge head coach Wade Witzaney.  “We have some really good teams in our league, and it was tough for us to compete without him.

“Troy has lightening speed and highlight reel moves with the puck,” added Witzaney.  “And he has a shot that can find the back of the net.”

Troy isn’t the only Crosson that made an impact on the Rams this season.  Older brother Aaron Crosson was moved from defense to offense and is one of the leading scorers in the conference with five goals and 10 assists in the seven conference games.

“With Troy out of the lineup, we moved Aaron from defense to offense,” said Witzaney.  “And after we have moved some of the pieces around, it should be great fun for Troy and Aaron to play together on the offensive end.

“We don’t make excuses, but we did lose some close games early in the season,” added Witzaney.  “We outplayed some teams – and lost.  That happens in hockey.”

The Crosson brothers are not the only pair of brothers on the Pennridge roster as Joshua and Joe Finlayson are also on the team.

“Joshua is a tall and lanky player with a scoring sense,” said Witzaney.  “And Joe is both a good skater and a very good defenseman.”

Pennridge has spilt the goaltending duties between senior Steve Wilms and junior Mike Weaver.

“We have full confidence in both goalies,” said Witzaney.  “Both Steve and Mike give us a chance to win each and every game.”

SHSHL American Conference ‘Snapshot’
Upper Moreland Golden Bears

Upper Moreland head coach Michael Angelo saw his squad play the outset of the season badly undermanned.  The Golden Bears – with a roster of just 10 skaters and a goaltender – did not have the services of their two best players.  The Park twins – Nick and Jake – are now back on the ice, and the Bears are more competitive because of it.

“We graduated seven seniors – lost three of our best players to the elite clubs – and were down to the 11 players,” said Angelo.  “When we started the season without Nick (knee injury) and Jake (concussion), we played some games with seven players.

“We talked about what things were going to be like without a big roster, but the kids wanted to continue to have a team,” added Angelo.  “They wanted to work hard and have fun.  And that is exactly what has happened.

“You would think that we would be worn down in the third period,” continued Angelo.  “But it looks to me that we are even stronger in the third period than the first and second period.  It seems like we are in better condition than the teams we play.”

Upper Moreland goaltender Patrick Beisel may not have a terrific goals-against-average, but the senior has earned the praise and respect of his head coach.

“I really think that we have the strongest goaltender in the league,” said Angelo.  “The other night, Wissahickon had 73 shots on goal – 73 shots.  And we were still in the game.

“We had a great goaltender last year in Jared Burch,” added Angelo.  “He graduated – but he taught Patrick a lot about how to play goal.

“Last year we went four lines deep,” continued Angelo.  “That isn’t happening this year – but I love these players.”

SHSHL National Conference ‘Snapshot’
Council Rock South Golden Hawks

Council Rock Southhas been one of the elite programs for years, and the Golden Hawks should be among the contending teams again this year in the SHSHL National Conference.

“There is no question that Central Bucks South is going to be the team to beat,” said veteran Rock South head coach Joe Houk.  “We are a very young team that is going to continue to get better with experience.”

Among the youngest of the Hawk flock is freshman goaltender Mason Procz.

“Mason has good size at 6-1 and should develop into an excellent goaltender for the next two or three years,” said Houk.  “He has a tremendous work ethic, and that makes up right now for what he lacks in skill.  He is very focused and has already come up with big saves in game situations.”

CR South does have a veteran blue line playing in front of Procz.  That trio includes senior Chad Weiner, senior Brian McBride, and junior Parker Defelice.

“Our defensemen are a good crew that know what is expected,” said Houk.  “They play the game with a lot of confidence.”

That confidence can also be seen in the play of the top Hawk line that consists of Justin Adams, Kyle Bradley, and Karl Martin.

“Justin is one of our captains and shows great leadership – and has great speed,” said Houk.  “Kyle has a great shot, and we don’t have a more hard nosed player than Karl.”

Houk has proven over the years to be able to mix and match his talent into a marvelous team by the close of the year – and this year shouldn’t be any different.
