SHSHL Varsity ‘AA’ Snapshot

Neshaminy head coach Matthew DeMatteo and his young Redskins still have SHSHL Varsity ‘AA’ playoff dreams in their heads as the regular season comes to a close this week.

There are two things that have to happen for Neshaminy (2-7-1, 5) to climb over Souderton (3-6-0, 6) for the eighth and final SHSHL playoff slot.

First the Redskins must defeat Truman (1-7-1, 3) on Wednesday, and second Souderton must lose to North Penn (7-2-1, 15) on the same night.

“There is no question that we would want to get to playoff hockey,” said DeMatteo.  “Playoff hockey is a different animal, and it would be great for the younger players on this team to see some results of their hard work.

“This year has been a rebuilding year for us, but to steal a phase, the players have chosen to ‘trust the process’,” added DeMatteo.  “We want to ride the wave that should come with a strong middle school program, and we want to continue to move the program in the right direction.”

But in order to get to SHSHL playoff hockey Neshaminy must first collect a win against a Truman team that won its first conference game recently against playoff bound Central Bucks East (4-6-0, 8) by a 4-2 score.

“Truman is in a very similar situation as we are,” said DeMatteo.  “They have some strong players and are well coached.  We can’t take anything for granted.

“We need to win that game if we want any chance to get into the playoffs,” added DeMatteo.  “And we feel that with Steve Glik in goal he gives us a chance to win.”

Glik has been amazing this season for the Redskins.  The talented junior has been bombarded with 447 shots on goal this season – has registered a staggering 406 saves – and has an impressive 3.82 goals against average.

Neshaminy is an extremely young team that features only a pair of seniors – Aric Miller and Derick Hahn.

In addition to Glik, the junior class showcases Josh Haines, Joey Buday, Brett Nelson, and Brendan Sheehy.  The sophomore class features Joey DeMatteo, Charles Potash, Ryan McColgan, and Zach McNamee.  And the freshman class showcases Thomas Gallagher and Billy Dougherty.

“All season we have been looking to take victories where we can get them,” said DeMatteo who is in his first year behind the varsity bench for the Redskins.  “And it would be great to be able to get one this week against Truman.”

A dream win that could put Neshaminy in the SHSHL playoff picture.

SHSHL Varsity ‘A’ Snapshot

Upper Dublin head coach Anthony Richichi and his young Flying Cardinals still have SHSHL Varsity ‘A’ playoff dreams in their heads as the regular season comes to a close this week.

There are three things that have to happen for Upper Dublin (7-6-0, 14) to secure the No. 4 seed in the four-team SHSHL American Conference playoffs.

First the Cardinals must defeat Abington (9-3-0, 18) on Wednesday, second Hatboro-Horsham (8-4) would have to lose both of its remaining games to unbeaten Wissahickon (13-0-0, 26) on Wednesday and to Abington on Friday.

The tiebreaker would favor Upper Dublin over Hatboro-Horsham if both teams finished with identical 8-6 marks.

“Our players very much want to compete in the playoffs,” said Richichi.  “We are going to have to work hard every shift and battle for every puck.

“We have not fared well against Abington, for whatever reason,” added Richichi.  “We are looking for a strong showing against a very good team.

“Abington has already clinched a playoff spot and might not bring the usual tenacity to the game,” continued Richichi.  “But my boys will want it.”

Upper Dublin will pin its hopes on a pair of usual performers in senior goaltender Stephen Sanders and junior center Ari Nordlinger.

“We will ride Stephen for every game we have remaining,” said Richichi.  “He has been outstanding all season.

“And Ari makes it go for us offensively,” added Richichi.  “We tend to get a little nervous if he’s not on his game.”

Sanders has been bombarded with 388 shots this season and has come up with a staggering 308 saves.  Nordlinger is the fourth leading scorer in the league with 40 goals and 52 points.

The senior leadership on Upper Dublin is found in Daniel Katz, Seth Wild, Dillon Fagan, and James Williams.

The Flying Cardinals boast a young lineup that consists of juniors Chris Barbera, Quinn Burns, and Ben Rosenthal.  The sophomore class includes Andrew Molish, and the freshmen are Oren Serafin, DJ Giammaruti, Brian Brown, Thomas Cubit, and Joey Fagan.

“The last time we played Abington we lost, but we were without (freshman) Seth Lerner who broke his shoulder in the Wissahickon game,” said Richichi.  “He is one of our best defenders, and now he is back.

“Our goal at the beginning of the season was to make the playoffs,” added Richichi.  “If things turn out for us, and we get that chance, it would be great for our younger players.”

And that playoff dream is still, barely, alive.
