WARWICK – Nick Chimera took a pass from Central Bucks East teammate Austin Baty, skated to the right corner just across the blue line and let the shot fly.

He might have been the most surprised player on the ice when it found the top glove-side corner for what proved to be the winning goal as the Patriots beat Neshaminy 3-2 at the Warwick Ice Arena on Friday night.

“I just took a wrist shot,” Chimera said. “I saw the defenseman closing in on me, so I wanted to get a shot off quick because I had two guys going to the net.

“I was hoping for a rebound actually. I was aiming for a pad to get a rebound, but I got under it a little too much and it went in.”

Neshaminy head coach Dan VanBuskirk was a little befuddled by the shot and goal.

“It was really just a weird bounce off his stick,” VanBuskirk said. “It kind of knuckled and curved in over his (Neshaminy goalie Matt Sheley’s) shoulder.”

But if that was weird, it was just the product of a very strange night on the ice. In the first period, there were no goals scored and only one penalty called.

In the second period, there was one goal scored, by the Redskins. But there were also 17 penalties called.

No one knew what to expect in the third period. What they got was three goals scored in the space of 46 seconds including Chimera's game-winner.

And actually the final score is a disservice to the two goalies. Both Sheley and East net-minder Steven Gilchrist stood on their heads for much of the game.

Sheley finished with 32 saves on 35 East shots. Gilchrist knocked away 27 of 29 shots by Neshaminy.

“It was pretty intense,” said Gilchrist. “I knew I had to focus to have my team win.

“I try to play my best always. I don't want to base myself off the other goalie.”

VanBuskirk knew what his team would be facing in the nets for the Patriots.

“We knew that going in,” he said. “We knew we were going to face a tough goalie.

“Our game plan was to take a lot of shots and go to the net because we knew our first shot wasn't going in.”

The first period was a goalie clinic. Both goalies stopped everything that came their way.

Sheley kicked out 11 shots and Gilchrist seven. And the pipes did their bit, with several pucks clanging off iron.

Then came the second period.

Nick Verdi got the lone goal of the period, scoring on the power play. It really seemed odd that only one goal was scored in a period where 17 penalties were called.

Verdi's tally came with three Patriots in the penalty box. It was the only power play goal of the game.

The Patriots were called 11 times and the Redskins six. All were two-minute minors except one unsportsmanlike conduct call for 10 minutes.

“I think both teams took the second period off,” VanBuskirk said. “Nobody was really skating, moving their feet. I think the goalies had a lot to do with that.”

With no more movement on the scoreboard, the game went into the third period. What else could happen?

Well, East tied the score at 1-1 8:05 into the stanza. Joe Ridolfi took a pass from Zach Davis and beat Sheley.

Then things got wild. Not penalty wild but goal wild.

Liam Kolar scored for East at 13:17 to put the Pats on top 2-1. But only 29 seconds later, Neshaminy tied the game on Nick Sabatini's goal.

Chimera finished things off 17 seconds after that with the game-winner.

VanBuskirk wasn't that upset with the loss for his team.

“The guys, during the game, were just getting more confident as the game went on,” he said. “I think once they realized they were skating with these guys, they felt, 'Hey, coach, maybe we can play with any team in this league.' I think it was a great stepping stone.”

But Chimera had confidence in his team.

“Everybody is gunning for us,” he said. “We know that.

“In games like this, we just have to grind it out and work harder than the other team. We want that Flyers Cup.”

SOUDERTON 4, NORTH PENN 3
Souderton exploded for three goals in the second period to earn the big win over the Knights. Alex Politsky led the Indians with a four-point night, finishing with two goals and two assists.
Daniel Rock scored the only goal in the first period to spot the Indians a 1-0 lead. They extended that to 3-0 after back-to-back goals by Politsky before Jeremy Snyder put the Knights on the scoreboard with a goal 9:05 into the period. Another Rock goal sent the Indians into the final period with a 4-1 lead. They needed every one of those goals as Ryan Nowicki and Jake Heckenberger scored back-to-back goals to make it a 4-3 game just six minutes into the third period. Neither team scored the rest of the way.
Souderton goalie Dawson Anders turned away 34 shots in a strong effort.

ARCHBISHOP WOOD 5, PENNSBURY 4
The Vikings opened up a 4-0 lead, and the Falcons never could dig themselves out of that early hole.
Patrick Cavanaugh and Nick Patton each scored to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead at the end of one period. Cavanaugh and Jonathan Pflugfelder scored back-to-back goals to open the second period before Pennsbury got on the board with goals from Tommy Hynes and Kevin Koerner (power play) to make it a 4-2 game heading into the final period.
Ryan Meinke scored to extend Wood’s lead to three, but John Thornton made things interesting with back-to-back goals in a 30-second span.
The Vikings held a 30-14 advantage in shots, but that was negated by the efforts of Trevor Schadler (23 saves) and Olivia Seaburg (two saves) in net for the Falcons.

UPPER MORELAND 9, LOWER MORELAND 5
In a non-league battle between the neighboring rivals, Sean Lloyd turned in a dazzling offensive performance, scoring five goals and adding an assist in a six-point effort.
Lloyd put the Golden Bears on the board with an early power play goal, and Jake Park made it a 2-0 game. Another Lloyd goal gave the Bears a three-goal edge before the Lions got on the scoreboard to make it a 3-1 game at the end of one period.
Jordin Holmes scored early in the second period to put the Bears on top 4-1 in a period that saw the two teams exchange goals with Upper Moreland holding a 5-3 lead heading into the final period. Lower Moreland trimmed that lead to one, but Matthew Iehle answered. Again, the Lions pulled to within one, but Lloyd put an exclamation point a big night, closing it out with three straight goals.
