Wissahickon defeated Hatboro-Horsham in SHSHL action Friday. Check out the recaps.

HATFIELD -- Wissahickon's ice hockey team has become a family affair.

There are three Harringtons associated with the team. Father Ken is the coach and senior Noah and sophomore Matt are players.

Matt scored the first Trojan goal of three in the first period and Wissahickon rode that output to a 4-2 victory over Hatboro-Horsham in a Suburban High School Hockey League game at Hatfield Ice Friday night.

Having your father as your coach isn't that strange to Noah. In fact, it almost seems like it has been going on for a while.

"It's a lot of fun, for sure," Noah said. "He's tougher on me, which is good I think, helping me grow a little bit more.  It definitely hits hard from my dad."

As for Ken, well, he's been doing it for a number of years.

"I've been coaching them in other sports for years," he said. "They're used to me."

Are you tougher on them than on the other players?

"I'm pretty even with them, I think," Ken said. "You'd have to ask them."

For Noah in his senior year, it has been, in his words, "cool."

"It's kind of cool because he played at all levels, played through college," Noah said of his father. "I kind of picked it up late, but it's nice to be under his rule."

How about playing with your younger brother?

"That's kind of cool, too," Noah said. "It's kind of a family thing. Playing on the same line as him sometimes is fun."

"I'm glad they're playing on the same team together," said Ken, displaying a fatherly pride.

One thing everyone agreed on was there were too many penalties. Wisshickon was called for 11 penalties and Hatboro-Horsham got seven; both side totaled 44 minutes in infractions.

"I think we had as many penalties in this game as we've had in all our other games," Ken said. "There were a lot of calls. It was a chippy game."

Hatter coach Gus Salfiti was not happy with his team’s march to the penalty box.

"We just kept on taking stupid penalties,” the Hatters’ coach said. "There are some good penalties to take and some stupid penalties to take. The stupid, lazy ones like slashing and tripping, that's what hurts. We were always killing penalties.

"Key guys were in the penalty box. Guys who would kill the penalty were in the box; guys who would score were in the box."

Key for Wissahickon were those three first-period goals, which got the Trojans off on the right foot.

"That was good," said coach Harrington. "I was hoping we'd get more, to be honest.

"We missed a lot of opportunities, a lot of good chances. For some reason, we love shooting into (the goalie's) glove hand."

As a player, Noah realized that the first period set the stage for the win.

"Both teams started slow," he said. "I think once we really got into it, started banging around, we started getting going.

"Adrenaline started running. We got one goal and just jumped on that and kept going with it."

The Hatters actually broke out of the gate first. Jacob Mueller beat Trojan goalie Jake Modelevsky at the 5:24 mark of the first period for a 1-0 lead.

But then Wissahickon woke up. The Trojans notched three goals in one minute and 53 seconds to get on top.

First was the goal by Matt Harrington at 11:59 on the power play. Then 43 seconds later, Matt Cade scored and 1:10 after that Sean Garry finished up, also on the power play.

The second period saw only one goal and that by Wissahickon's Nolan Piatkowski, but the period also saw seven penalties called.

Hatboro-Horsham scored the only goal in the third period. Jonathan Herbert scored at the 2:57 mark to cut the Trojan lead to 4-2, the final score.

But the third saw more penalties. This time eight infractions were called, six against Wissahickon.
