WARWICK -- Let's set the scene.

The second period had just ended. Plymouth Whitemarsh led Upper Moreland 10-1 after scoring seven goals in the second period.

The Colonials were looking to net one more goal to end the game early via the mercy rule. But the Golden Bears weren’t having any of that.

Upper Moreland held off Plymouth Whitemarsh in the final period, allowing no goals but still fell 10-1.

The whole game boiled down to the third period. It wasn't that the Colonials let down in the final 16 minutes; it was that Upper Moreland refused to be mercy ruled.

"That was a great performance all around," PW coach Josh Aiello said. "The first and second periods were phenomenal.

"In the third, you had one team that just wanted to end the game and put the puck in the net but the other team - you've got to give credit to them. They gave 110 percent the entire time, and (we) tip our hats to them for a good solid performance in the third.

"They held us to zero goals, and we couldn't put one in and neither could they."

It didn't help the Bears that they were playing with only nine skaters and their goalie and that it was their third game of the week.

"(It's tough) having a short bench, which we've had all year," said Bears coach Mike Angelo. "We tend to be a third-period team.

"We played a first place team the other day and were down 6-0. We came back and we lost basically by one goal. They got an empty-netter.

"We did not roll over. Throughout the whole team, they do not give up."

Aiello had sympathy for his fellow coach.

"It's definitely tough when you don't have a full bench out there," the PW coach said. "You're constantly tired. Those guys were winded.

"You've got to give credit to the other team. They played with a lot of class and determination and they played the whole three periods."

Angelo gave a lot of credit to his goalie, Patrick Biessel, who stopped 25 of 35 shots.

"Patrick, our goalie, forgets the score," Angelo said. "Look at the shots he has faced all year. He's probably the No. 1 goalie in the league as far a shots on."

On the Plymouth Whitemarsh side, the standout was forward John Sciarrone, who led the way in the seven-goal second period with four goals of his own.

"It was my first hat trick," Sciarrone said, who is playing his first season at the varsity level. "It's been a good season, a learning experience.

"I was on jayvee last year. I'm just trying to help the team win. I helped them tonight."

Aiello had great praise for his Sciarrone.

"He's only been playing hockey for about a year and a half," the PW coach said. "He has a great work ethic. Over the summer, he really worked hard and it's paying off."

The Colonials built up a 3-0 lead in the first period. Chris Rinaldi, Chris Zawislak and Skyler Goldstein all scored goals within a three-minute period midway through the stanza.

Plymouth Whitemarsh kept rolling in the second period. Rinaldi netted a second goal and J.J. Eisenlohr also scored before Sciarrone got on the board with his first of the night.

Upper Moreland finally broke the ice with 9:26 gone in the period. Colin Burch broke up PW goalie Jake Magill's shutout with assists from Mykel Courduff and Dylan Cossaboone.

But that didn't break the Colonials' momentum. They got three more goals from Sciarrone and one from Kevin Lawrence to build up the 10-1 lead.

All that remained was one more PW goal and the game would be over. But Upper Moreland stopped every attempt.

"The third period, that was the game," said Angelo. "Put aside the score, that was the game."

WILLIAM TENNENT 5, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 3
In a high stakes game against conference rival Rock South, CJ Lineman turned away 38 shots in a stellar outing in goal, and teammate Alec Dugan had a three-point night with one goal and two assists to lead the Panthers to the huge win.
It was Dugan scoring an unassisted goal in the opening minute of the game, and then it was Brendan Sherwood (Blake Bagdon/John Dern assists) scoring at the 7:04 mark to put the Panthers on top 2-0. A goal by Mike Padgeon (Dugan/Sherwood assists) gave the Panthers a 3-0 lead after one period.
That lead grew to 5-0 after back-to-back goals in a one-minute span in the second period by Sean Ovington (Padgeon/Jack McKeever assists) and Charlie Feeney (Ovington/Dugan assists). Feeney’s goal came on a power play. The Golden Hawks broke up Lineman’s shutout bid with a goal by Justin Adams (Darren Barder/Nick Meli assists) at the 12:36 mark to make it a 5-1 game heading into the final period.
Barder (Joe Marcelle/Meli assists) and Karl Martin scored the third period’s only goals, but it was too little too late for the Golden Hawks, who held a 41-22 advantage in shots.

CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 8, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 1
The Titans looked every bit the part of the defending state champs in Friday’s no-doubt-about-it win. Only the remarkable 50-save effort of Rock North goalie Andy Cicconi kept the Indians reasonably close for the better part of the contest.
Tyler Dunn led a balanced Titan attack with two goals and two assists for a four-point night while Anthony Rubas (one goal, two assists) had a three-point game.
Thomas Liberta scored an unassisted goal less than a minute into the game, and before the period was over, Bryan Dunton (Sean Horan/Leo Flick assists) and Anthony Rubas (Dunn/Aaron King assists) also scored single goals for a 3-0 Titan lead.
Frank Carter’s power play goal with an assist from Dunn made it a 4-0 game before Rock North’s Cavan Tully scored an unassisted goal. Dunn answered for the Titans, who closed it out with three goals in the third period, including a pair from Jake Wetherbee.
The Titans held a 58-7 advantage in shots.

CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 0, NORTH PENN 0
It’s a rare occasion when neither team finds the net, but that was the case when the Knights and Patriots squared off on Friday night.
While defense was the name of the game on both sides, it was the dazzling 43-save performance of Jake Snyder that saved the day for the Knights. North Penn’s veteran goalie set the tone by turning away 10 shots in the opening period, but it was in the second and third periods that he really excelled, stopping 17 shots in the second period and 16 more in the third.
Evan Angotti turned away 19 shots in a shutout performance for the Patriots.
