WARRINGTON – Nearly everyone got what they were expecting on Wednesday night at the Bucks County Ice Sports Center.

Upper Moreland got a victory, a 9-5 decision over Wissahickon. The win keeps the Golden Bears unbeaten in league play at 4-0.

Upper Moreland forward Sean Lloyd got what he expected, a lot of goals. Three of them came off Lloyd's stick.

Wissahickon coach Mike Wolf got what he expected - a very difficult game. And Bear coach Mike Angelo got the battle he anticipated.

“I thought it was going to be a very high scoring game,” Lloyd said. “We knew they had a couple of good scoring guys out there so we covered them as best we could.”

Lloyd notched goals in the first and third periods, scoring twice in the final stanza. Bear teammate Nick Park also had a hat trick.

“We knew it was going to be a tough one before the game started,” said Wolf. “They're the best team in the league. They're the No. 1 team in the league for a reason.”

One of the big reasons is that Upper Moreland can score goals. So far this season, the Golden Bears have netted 44 goals in league play and 79 goals overall.

Angelo had a different slant on things.

“I didn't expect it to be high scoring,” the Upper Moreland coach said. “I did expect a dog fight.

“I knew they score a lot of goals. We just had to combat them with what we had.”

What the Bears had was a lot of goals of their own. And the play of goalie Patrick Beissel.

Beissel is in his first season as the starting goalie for Upper Moreland after playing three seasons with the jayvee squad. Jared Burch, who graduated last spring, manned the pipes for the Bears last year.

“Patrick played head over heels tonight,” Angelo said. “He really kept us in the game. I told him that I think he won us the game tonight.”

Beissel had some other help from his own goalie coach. Burch has volunteered to help as an unofficial goalie coach for Beissel.

“We've got Burchy coaching him in practice,” Angelo explained. “Burchy is really working with him in practice.”

Whatever Burch is doing with Beissel, he should continue it. The Bear net-minder stopped 26 Wissahickon shots and staved off a Trojan rally in the second period.

“I thought their goalie played tremendous,” Wolf said of Beissel, “because we had chances to score. Usually, the puck is going into the net but tonight it didn't.”

Wolf also had some praise for his goalie, Noah Katz. This is Katz's first year playing ice hockey.

“Noah did play well,” Wolf said. “He made some saves I didn't think he was going to make.”

But, in the end, it was the scoring strength of Upper Moreland that made the difference in the game. The Bears got three goals from Lloyd and Park but also got scores from Colton Arizini, Jordin Holmes and Andy Iehle.

“Some of the players who usually don't get a lot of goals stepped up,” Lloyd said. “They really helped us out today.

“You never know when a kid's going to have an off night. When someone else picks up, it really shows our faith in our team.”

Upper Moreland got off to a fast start, scoring four goals in the first period. Arizini got things going at the 6:14 mark with an unassisted goal.

Park got his first goal of the game 1:42 later off an assist from Lloyd. Wissahickon came back with its own goal in the first period, an unassisted marker by Edward Burkart.

But then Lloyd and Holmes tallied their goals. Lloyd picked up another assist on Holmes' goal.

The Trojans came roaring back in the second period. They outscored the Bears 3-1, tying the game at 4-4 before Park scored his second goal of the game in a short-handed situation.

The third period was very similar to the first. Upper Moreland again scored four goals to only one for Wissahickon.

Park got his third goal to start the period and Lloyd notched his final two and Iehle added the ninth goal for the Golden Bears. Luke Honorowski scored the only goal of the period for the Trojans.

“We're fortunate,” Angelo said. “We have a bunch of guys who we can spread (the scoring) out with whether it be Lloyd, the Parks, Iehle, Arizini. We spread it out pretty well.”

They certainly do that.
