HATFIELD -- Special teams are often talked about in regard to football.
But they also play a big part at the ice hockey rink where special teams are key in the power play and penalty kill.
On Thursday night, Wissahickon's penalty kill team was outstanding. The Trojans killed off a four-minute and a five-minute man advantage for Lower Moreland on their way to a 9-3 win over the Lions.
"We have guys who, when they get the puck, know how to possess it," Wissahickon coach Mike Wolf said. "We have some really fast guys who can put pressure on people.
"We really don't (work on it a lot). It's just the players that we have; they know what to do.
"It comes natural because we are in the penalty box a lot more than we would like to be.
"The defensemen we have back there really anchor it. They really know what they are doing."
Tony D'Orazio, who coached Lower Moreland in the absence of head coach Joel Sauls, was impressed.
"Their special teams played very well," he said. "(They) shut us down."
That special team play was very important for the Trojans at a critical point in the game. A goal on the four-minute advantage for the Lions would have changed the complexion of the game.
Leading 2-1 after the first period, Wissahickon quickly built that lead up to 4-1. But then a slashing and tripping penalty on the same player with slightly less that five minutes left in the period put the Trojans down a man.
But they killed it off. And then duplicated it in the third period when the outcome of the game wasn't really in doubt.
"It's basically just sticking with the system, staying in your square and not letting anyone get behind you," said defenseman Ed Burkart, who scored three goals to lead the Trojans. "We're pretty good on the penalty kill every game."
Things started out quickly for Wissahickon. The Trojans scored two goals within 13 seconds right after the five-minute mark of the opening period.
Kyle Wolf got the first goal, using assists from Jake Dalsemer and Brandon Rosoff. Burkart notched the second unassisted.
But the Lions came right back. Cory Blumenthal scored an unassisted power play goal with 8:54 gone in the period.
Wissahickon came right back in the second, scoring twice. Burkart got his second goal of the game, also unassisted, and Dylan Alioto scored the fourth Trojan goal off an assist from Rosoff.
The Trojan offense came out storming in the third period. They scored five goals and allowed only two, one with 1:26 gone in the period and one as the buzzer sounded to end the game.
Lower Moreland's Blumenthal got the Lions close at 4-2 with an unassisted goal. But that was it until Brennan Bostock fired one in as time expired.
In between, Wissahickon scored five times. Alioto got the first one 34 seconds after Blumenthal's goal.
That was followed by goals from Burkart, Harry Hessler and Noah Harrington. Harrington scored the final two goals of the game for the Trojans.
The Trojans got a four-point night from Burkart (three goals and an assist), but he deflected credit to his teammates.
"We have a lot of talent up front," he said. "We've got a couple kids who can put the puck in the net.
"Everyone comes to play every night. It's not every night I have to put up big numbers."
His coach credited the offensive output of Burkart.
"Eddie is back after a while (away)," Wolf said. "He is a very talented hockey player.
"He plays defense, but we can count on his offense."
But it all went back to the special teams for Wissahickon. They did allow one power play goal and a short-handed goal, both scored by Blumenthal, but they also killed off a lot of penalties.

PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 6, HATBORO-HORSHAM 6
The Colonials held a 46-26 advantage in shots, but that didn’t translate to a lead on the scoreboard as they were forced to settle for a tie with the Hatters, who were sparked by the 40-save effort of goalie Ryan McElroy.
Offensively, the Colonials were led by the four-point effort of Kevin Lawrence (two goals, two assists) while the Hatters received a four-point performance from Jacob Mueller, who also had two goals and two assists.
The first period featured a whole lot of offense by both teams. Jordan Brenner (Mueller assist) put the Hatters on the scoreboard in the opening seconds of the game, but Chris Rinaldi (Lawrence assist) scored the equalizer 2:54 into the period. A goal by Christopher Ward (Lawrence assist) gave PW an early 2-1 lead, but the Hatters answered with three straight goals – two by Zach Aubry and one from Ryan Sharp. A goal by PW’s John Sciarrone made it a 4-3 game after one period.
The Hatters knotted the score on a Mueller goal early in the second period, but Lawrence answered with a goal for the Colonials to send PW into the final period with a 5-4 lead. Back-to-back goals by Lawrence and Sciarrone gave the Colonials a 6-5 lead, but as time was about to expire, Mueller scored a power play goal, forcing the Colonials to settle for the 6-6 tie.

WISSAHICKON 9, LOWER MORELAND 3
Edward Burkart connected for the hat trick and also had an assist to lead the Trojans while teammates Dylan Alioto (two goals, one assist) and Noah Harrington (two goals, one assist) both had three-point nights.
The Trojans held a lopsided 48-17 advantage in shots, but the Lions kept it close for two periods, thanks to the 39-save effort of goalie Eric Sphar.
The Trojans used goals by Kyle Wolf and Burkart to go on top 2-0 just over five minutes into the game. Lower Moreland’s Cory Blumenthal scored a power play goal to make it a 2-1 game after one period. Goals by Burkhart and Alioto sent the Trojans into the third period with a 4-1 lead. A shorthanded goal by Blumenthal made it a 4-2 game, but the Trojans reeled off five straight goals to blow the game wide open before Brennan Bostock scored an unassisted goal for the Lions as time expired.
