SOL SHSHL Ice Hockey Wrap (12-12-18)

Central Bucks South earned another big win in SHSHL play. Ben Reese recaps all the action.

WARWICK -- Heading into the Suburban High School Hockey League season, a question that always arises is how good Central Bucks South is going to be.

After all, the Titans lost a lot from their 2017-18 team. There is no Matt Stoll or Joe DeLaurentis or Frank Carter or Tim White.

Well, they're just fine.

"They're a great team," said Pennsbury coach Ryan Daley after his Falcons absorbed a 10-0 mercy-rule defeat at the hands of the Titans. "They've always been a great team and they will continue to be."

Sure, a large amount of South's scoring punch from last year is gone, but the players that remain know where the net is.

However, on Wednesday night at Revolution Ice Gardens, the Titans were not just missing the Stolls and DeLaurentises and Carters. They were missing nine team members for various reasons.

"We had every excuse in the world to not come out and play like we usually do," said assistant coach Tyler Skorski, who took over the team for head coach Shaun McGinty, who was also missing (he was home tending to his sick wife and children). "We had every excuse from sickness to injuries to suspensions to school plays.

"I'm just glad we came out and got through the game. We came out with a good first period; they took a nap in the beginning of the second."

South sewed up the game in the first period. The Titans scored four goals and outshot the Falcons 19-2.

It took them a little longer to get going in the second. South didn't score until the 9:33 mark of the period and then added a second goal less than three minutes later.

They finished things off in the third period. After scoring about a third of the way through, the Titans bunched the final three goals within the span of 2:22.

"Our goal is to mercy-rule them and get out quick," South captain Colin Abbonizio said. "That's what we were focused on, just getting out of there quick, staying focused.

"To get pucks on the net, drive the net. That's the goal."

They did get pucks on the net, a lot of pucks. They took 44 shots on goal, driving Pennsbury starting goalie Topher Seiler to the bench after two periods.

To be fair to Seiler, he didn't get much help. His teammates could only put six shots on goal for the entire two-plus periods.

"Out mentality is, no matter who we play, you go 100 percent," Skorski said. "We don't sit back because we feel that if you're going to trap, we're going to disrespect you. That's the way we play.

"We play hard. We just play our game and keep rolling the whole season no matter what."

Stephen McMillan got the Titans going, scoring with only one minute gone in the first period. That was followed by goals from Abbonizio, Reis Braccio and McMillan again for a 4-0 lead.

Dominick Liberta tallied the first South goal in the second period and Abbonizo added the second.

In the third, Braccio scored at the 5:53 mark. Connor Gaffney netted his first goal of the season at 10:27 with Abbonizio scoring again at 11:03. McMillan finished off the mercy-rule scoring at 12:05.

"We're a young team," said Daley. "We're majority freshmen and sophomores.

"They've got a lot of learning to do. It helps our guys to see what a top-level team in this league can be.

"For us to have that big a gap (in the score), it should get the guys going. That's what I want the team to be. I think we're on the right track."

South used all 11 players on its bench. Everyone got some ice time.

"Mason (Moyer), our goalie, got his first full-time shutout," Skorski said. "Eleven guys, everybody saw plenty of ice."

That just makes CB South that much more dangerous going forward.
