HATFIELD -- After the end of last year's ice hockey season, North Penn graduated a lot of its offense.

Obviously, someone had to pick up that slack. Alex Peterson has been that player.

Peterson scored four goals - including the one that put the Knights ahead for good – to lead North Penn to an 11-4 win over Abington at Hatfield Ice Arena Thursday night. Peterson also had two assists to complete a six-point night.

"Offensively, he's a very talented player," North Penn coach Kevn Vaitis said. "He's got a ton of talent.

"He's able to kind of flip that switch (and take over a game). Peterson gets the puck on his stick, and he can really go from 0 to 60 quickly."

And that is just what the Knights need.

"We lost a lot of offense," Vaitis said. "We're relying on him and some other guys to lead us offensively right now. Hopefully, the other guys can step up their game."

Peterson knew he was going to be relied upon to take up the offensive slack for North Penn.

"I definitely have to step up," he said. "We lost a bunch of our top players from last year. Now we have to fill those goals."

The key goal of the four Peterson scored came near the end of the second period. North Penn entered the period with a 3-2 lead only to see that margin disappear when Abington's Thomas Carroll beat Knight goalie John Roberts in front of the net to tie the score at 3-3 with only 21 seconds elapsed in the period.

With slightly more than two minutes left in the period, Peterson picked up the puck in his own end and took off. The speed that his coach spoke about suddenly came to the fore as he turned on the jets and skated through the Ghosts' defense to deposit the puck behind Abington goalie Evan Metz. Suddenly, the Knights were on top 4-3.

Jake Heckenberger and Austin Redilla also lit the lamp in the final minutes to give North Penn a solid 6-3 lead going into the third period.

"It was a little bit of a momentum killer," said Abington coach Pat Croce of Peterson’s go-ahead goal. "I thought we played a good solid two periods. In the third period, it just wasn't enough."

Right now, Vaitis feels that he has three solid scorers on the ice.

"Right now, Peterson, (Derek) Heckler and Heckenberger are leading our team offensively," the Knights' coach said. "They are carrying us.

"We've got a number of new faces, guys who are still learning the ropes at the varsity level. If we can get them to elevate their level and Peterson, Heckler and Heckenberger can play at their level, I think we can really start putting it on offensively."

North Penn got on the scoreboard first, thanks to a power play goal by Ryan Nowicki with 8:50 gone in the first period. He got assists from Heckler and Peterson.

But Abington came right back. The Ghosts scored 1:30 later when Ryan Woelbl notched the first of his three goals to tie the score.

Peterson got his first goal 1:31 later to give the Knights the lead again, and when Jaime Green scored his first goal of the season with 12:31 gone, the North Penn lead jumped to 3-1.

Abington, however, was still hanging around. The Ghosts got a second goal from Woelbl, and the period finished with North Penn ahead 3-2.

Peterson wasn't happy with the way his team played in the first period.

"We've had a lot of times where we've kind of slacked off, haven't played real good," he said. "We came into this one thinking we were going to beat them.

"Early on, it wasn't that way. We had to work for it."

Carroll tied the score as the second period opened. And Peterson untied it with his short-handed goal.

Then things seemed to fall apart for the Ghosts. In quick succession, North Penn got goals from Heckenberger and Redilla to go on top 6-3.

In the third period, except for another goal by Woelbl, it was all North Penn. The Knights scored five goals to put the game away.

The goals came from Peterson (2), Jake Burns, Jared Barkley and Andrew Galetta. The last three goals -- Peterson, Barkley and Galetta -- all came within a span of 1:31 as the period wound down.

"We had a couple of defensive letdowns and it kind of got us behind too quick and we couldn't dig out of it," said Croce, whose team had rallied for an impressive come-from-behind win over William Tennent 24 hours earlier. "Some nights you've got it and some nights you don't."

COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 2, NESHAMINY 1
The Indians and Redskins exchanged first period goals, and Mark Tosti broke the tie with a goal early in the second period. It turned out to be the game winner in a contest that featured more defense than offense.
Rock North goalie Andy Cicconi turned away 33 or 34 shots he faced, and Neshaminy’s Matt Lucas stopped 37 of 39 shots in a contest that saw the Indians hold a slight advantage in shots (37-33).
Tosti (Johnny Vanni assist) put the Indians on the scoreboard early, but Neshaminy’s Mark Hullings (Nick Foster assist) answered six minutes later with a goal for the Redskins. That 1-1 tie held until Tosti connected for his second goal early in the second period. Neither team scored the rest of the way.

COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 9, PENNSBURY 7
The Golden Hawks outscored the Falcons 3-1 in the second period, and that turned out to be the difference in the game. Kyle Bradley led a balanced Rock South attack with three goals and one assist. Teammate Brian McBride (one goal, three assists) had a four-point night while Justin Adams added a goal and two assists.
For the Falcons, Jack Kelly led the way with two goals and three assists for five points, and both Luke Ledes (two goals, one assist) and Kevin Koerner (three assists) had three-point nights.
The Golden Hawks struck first on a goal by Brian McBride. The Falcons reeled off three consecutive goals with Ledes connecting on back-to-back goals – the second one shorthanded – and Anthony Bench added a single goal to put the Falcons on top 3-1. Rock South’s Matt Owens and Kyle Bradley scored in the closing minutes to knot the score.
The second period was the difference in the game. Chad Weiner connected on a power play goal 3:44 into the period, and when Justin Adams and Danny Richmond scored back-to-back goals in a two-minute span six minutes later, the Golden Hawks led 6-3. Ryan Mudrick (Kelly assist) scored in the closing seconds to make it a 6-4 game heading into the final period.
A Kelly goal early in the third period pulled the Falcons to within one, but Bradley connected for the Golden Hawks. It was a pattern that continued for the remainder of the period with Pennsbury’s Nathan Raccagno and Rock South’s Nick Meli exchanging goals, and then it was Kelly and Bradley exchanging goals to close out the scoring with Bradley’s empty net goal sealing the Falcons’ fate.
The Golden Hawks held a 42-31 advantage in shots.

WILLIAM TENNENT 4, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 1
Twenty-four hours after absorbing a disappointing loss to Abington that saw the Ghosts rally from behind to earn the win, the Panthers scored three third period goals to seal the Patriots’ fate. CJ Lineman was close to perfect in goal for the Panthers, turning away 23 of 24 shots and allowing only a third period goal.
The Panthers – thanks to a Brendan Sherwood power play goal late in the first period (Charlie Feeney assist) – took a 1-0 lead into the third period.
Charlie Feeney (Andrew Bean assist) scored 1:52 into the final period, and when Sherwood connected on his second power play goal of the night – this one with assists from Dan Brady and Chris Kreider, the Panthers led 3-0. Austin Chase (Nick Chimeria assist) broke up Lineman’s shutout bid with a goal 3:17 into the period, but Mike Padgeon (Andrew Bean/CJ Lineman assists) got that goal back midway through the period for the 4-1 final.
