CB West defeated Pennridge 6-2. Check out all of Wednesday's results.

By Ben Reese

HATFIELD -- Defense was the name of the game Wednesday night at Hatfield Ice.

It wasn't that obvious from the final score, a 6-2 win for Central Bucks West over Pennridge, but neither team scored until the Bucks tallied twice late in the first period. And it was still a one-goal game early in the third.

However, then West scored three straight goals to put the game away.

"Our D played its best game all season long," West coach Dave Baun said. "We had a double practice on Monday and we worked on our D calls.

"We moved the puck from defense to offense as well as we have all season. You hear the call being made and see them execute it and you feel like there's some progress being made."

Patrick Smith, the Bucks’ captain who scored the first two goals for West, liked what he saw from his team's defense against the Rams.

"Our defense was outstanding," Smith said. "Jonah (goalie Jonah Brous) was stopping the pucks, and it was so much easier going in transition from defense to offense."

The Bucks scored all six of their goals from in close. None of them were from outside a 15-foot radius from the goal.

"We were able to move the puck well and get a lot of traffic in front which made him (Pennridge goalie Steve Wilms) bobble the puck and give us some rebounds," Smith explained. "In this league, you can't score with a lot of snipes (long shots).

"You just have to go to the net hard. That's the kind of team we are; we're going to the net hard every time."

Pennridge coach Wade Witzaney recognized his team's problem in its own end.

"We have trouble getting it out of our own zone," the Rams’ coach said. "This is a big game for us. We have to compete against West.

"They got a lot of goals in the paint tonight, in front of the net. That was a big difference."

Smith took care of all the scoring in the first period. He netted his first goal on the power play at the 14:10 mark of the opening stanza off assists from Shawn Phillips and Ryan Trefz.

His second came only 49 seconds later. He beat Wilms from in close with Scotty Cappuccio and John McCreadie getting the assists.

Phillips gave the Bucks a 3-0 lead in the second period. He got on the board off a pass from Trefz at 10:38.

But the Rams weren't dead.

Troy Crosson scored his first goal of the night with 1:57 remaining in the second period with assists going to Aaron Crosson and Josh Finlayson.

Pennridge cut the lead down again early in the final period. Troy Crosson again scored to make it a 3-2 game.

However, the Bucks came roaring back to score three straight goals. McCreadie got an unassisted goal followed by goals by Luke McCleerey and Joe Anton.

"I thought we made a nice comeback," Witzaney said of the Rams' rally. "We got one late in the second and came back in the third and made it close at 3-2.

"Then we let in three goals in five minutes. I think the momentum swing was going with us but when they came back and scored I knew we were in trouble."
