SOL SHSHL Ice Hockey Wrap (2-12-15)

CR South won a key SOL SHSHL contest. Check out all the results for SOL teams in action Thursday.

WARMINSTER – Destiny.
That elusive idea that things are going to happen the way you want them to happen.
But destiny can be changed.
That's what Council Rock South did Thursday night at Bucks County Ice Sports Arena, beating William Tennent, 3-2, on a goal in the final 30 seconds of the third period. That play altered the destiny of both teams.
Entering the game, Tennent held a three-point lead on Rock South in the National Conference of the Suburban High School Hockey League. A win would have given the Panthers an insurmountable lead in the conference.
Now, the Golden Hawks are only one point behind the conference leader.
It would seem that Tennent still held sway in the standings. However, the Panthers have only one game left to play while South still has two remaining on its schedule.
A Tennent win in its final game will give it 22 points. If the Hawks win both of their games, they would finish the season with 23 points and first place in the conference.
"We didn't need the one point (if the game ended in a tie)," Rock South coach Joe Houk said. "We needed both points.
"Hopefully, if we continue to play the way I think we can play, we'll finish on top. (When it) comes down to crunch time at the end of the year, you hope that everything is starting to gel together."
To set the stage in the third period, William Tennent had rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game on a pair of power play goals. As the clock ticked toward zero, it appeared that the teams would settle for a tie and Tennent - with a victory in its final game – would sew up the conference title.
But then something happened.
An unexpected turnover gave South the puck and an excellent pass found Darren Barder in front of the net and he beat Tennent goalie C.J. Lineman with 26 seconds left for the win.
"We were lucky enough to have an opportunity," Houk said. "They turned it over along the boards. Justin (Adams) made a great pass into the slot and Darren was able to plug it in."
Despite the competitiveness of the game, neither coach was pleased with the performance of his team.
"Unfortunately, we only played one period, that third period," said Tennent coach Nick D'Aurizio. "If we put together a full three-period game, the outcome might have been different."
The Panthers might have had a reason for their less-than-sterling play in the first two periods.
"We're playing two games in less than 24 hours," D'Aurizio said. "It's a real tough turnaround. We didn't get our legs under us for two periods."
Even with the win, Houk had some concerns.
"If we had played the whole game like we played the first two periods, I don't think they would have had a prayer," he said. "We controlled the whole flow of the game, then we fell into penalty trouble.
"They got physical on us and then we started to be stupid. You get a beeline on the penalty box, it just doesn't work."
By that Houk meant that his team started to take some bad penalties. In the third period alone, the Eagles were called for four straight penalties and gave up two power play goals.
Both goalies were stellar in net. Council Rock South outshot William Tennent 30-23 but most of the Golden Hawks’ shots came in the first two periods while more than half of the Panthers' shots came in the third.
In the first two stanzas, Rock South put 22 shots on goal, 11 in each period. Tennent could manage only three in the first and eight in the second. In the third, the Panthers outshot the Hawks 12-8.
In the opening period, the Hawks notched the only goal with Danny Richmond doing the honors off an assist from Joe Marcella.
The Golden Hawks put another on the board in the final seconds of the second period. Barder took a pass from Joshua Vergules and found the net for a 2-0 Rock South advantage.
Things turned in Tennent's favor in the third. At the 5:59 mark, Sean Ovington, with an assist from Charlie Feeney, scored the first Panther goal on the power play to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Five minutes later, Tennent connected on another power play goal when Mike Padgeon converted a Feeney pass for the tying goal.
That left everything up to Adams and Barder. And destiny was on the side of the Golden Hawks.

Alex DeCristofano connected for the hat trick and also had an assist to finish with four points while teammate Ryan Woelbl added a goal and two assists (three points) to lead the Ghosts to the win. For the Indians, Johnny Vanni led the way with two goals and an assist.
The Ghosts seized control with a five-goal outburst in the opening period. The Indians led 2-1 after goals by Zach Herman and Andrew Speeney, but Abington’s Thomas Carroll (Aidan Smith assist) evened the score. A goal by Vanni put the Indians on top 3-2, but Abington’s Elliot Leporati, DeCristofano and Justin Adamski connected for back-to-back-to-back goals to send the Ghosts into the second period with a 5-3 lead.
Woelbl scored the only goal of the second period to put the Ghosts on top 6-3. The two teams exchanged goals in the third period as the Ghosts held on for the win.
The Ghosts held a 33-30 advantage in shots.
