HATFIELD -- You just can't beat hot goaltending.

Central Bucks West coach Dave Baun would agree with that.

His Bucks couldn't beat Central Bucks East goalie Matt Ogonowski and the Patriots rode his play to a 3-1 victory over West Wednesday night at Ice World.

The freshman net-minder kicked out 40 shots in the game, surrendering only one goal in the second period in an outstanding performance.

"That was awesome," East coach Ken Latchum said. "That was great goaltending.

"That kept us in after the first goal. You could see the confidence building as the game wore on."

Baun couldn't help but agree.

"He's awesome," he said. "Ogonowski was spectacular.

"I knew he was good. He's good the way Jonah (Brous, West's goalie last year, who has graduated) was good. The puck never gets away from him. To my way of thinking, he was the difference in the game."

It certainly wasn't a walk in the park for Ogonowski. He faced 17 shots in the opening period, 12 in the second and 12 more in the third, allowing only the goal in the second.

Ogonowski, who stands 5-foot-8 and weighs "about" 125 pounds, was asked about his hockey background.

"I started playing when I was in the second grade," he said. "I was eight years old."

Why goalie?

"I was in Canada and I always watched hockey with my dad. Being a goalie always interested me so I chose that."

He appreciates what his father has done for him. Ogonowski was born in Germany, where his father was stationed with the military.

"I got a lot of my motivation from my dad and he's my inspiration. I thank him for this win,” he said.

Latchum was happy with the way his team played.

"As I told them, I don't care about the wins and losses," he said. "I care about how you play. It came together the way they're supposed to play and they did great."

Despite the outcome, Baun wasn't disappointed with the way his team played.

"My hat goes off to East because I thought they played really hard," he said. "I thought they played well.

"I can't say our team played badly. We didn't do some of the things we should have done, but in an emotional, rivalry game, they are really revved up for the game, a lot of emotion.

"A lot of these kids went to school together so there was a lot of emotion and, when you get that, the game becomes unpredictable. These games are always unpredictable.

"It doesn't matter who's better or who's worse. They're always close games and very often the result is not expected."

East broke out of the gate first. Colin Quinn scored the first goal of the game for the Patriots at the 10:40 mark of the opening period.

West tied the score in the second period. Daniel Poliak beat Ogonowski from the right circle with assists from Michael Samson and Owen Shields.

Brendan Lynch broke the tie in the third period. The East forward hit the net off an assist from Nick LoCastro.

Quinn finished up the scoring in the third period. With the West goalie pulled in favor of a sixth skater, Quinn found the open net with 25 seconds left in the game.

The victory brought something more than a win to East. It also clinched a playoff spot for the Patriots.

"I'll take a playoff spot," said Latchum. "If they play like that, they can do some damage. It's a lot of fun when it's like this."

Back-to-back goals by Marron (Shane Reilly assist) and Keith Wiercinski (Marron, Owen Newhouse assists) gave the Crusaders a 4-1 lead in the third period, but the Knights were unfazed, rallying to knot the score.
