HATFIELD -- Sports have many great rivalries.

There’s the Eagles and the Cowboys, the Yankees and the Red Sox, the Canadians and the Bruins.

On a smaller scale, the Suburban High School Hockey League has a rivalry just as intense, just as heated.

That rivalry is Central Bucks South and North Penn. It played out Thursday night at Hatfield Ice with the Titans taking a 6-2 decision from the Knights.

"It's North Penn," South coach Tom Coyne said when asked why this game was so intense. "It's been a great rivalry.

"No matter whether you're out of the race or in the thick of it, it's North Penn. We love playing North Penn."

That carries over to the players as well. Just ask South’s Leo Flick, who scored two goals including the game-winner.

"It's been a rivalry for a while," he said. "I haven't played too long, but it really fires us up in the locker room.

"They're who we look forward to. Over the years, it's been passed down that we've got to beat North Penn.

"It always gets us going and ready to play. This is definitely competitive."

North Penn coach Kevin Vaitis acknowledged the rivalry as well.

"Any time North Penn and CB South play each other (it’s important)," he said. "We've been in the finals the last two years against each other.

"It's always a big game. Heading into the playoffs, you want to be playing your best hockey, playing against the best teams."

The rivalry goes beyond the games the two teams play against each other.

"A lot of these guys play travel hockey together and against each other," Vaitis said. "They play each other in school and they've played each other in the championship the last two years.

"Neither team likes the other and it makes for a good game."

While they may not be fond of each other, the two teams do share a mutual respect.

"I've got such respect for North Penn," Coyne explained. "They bring a great game; we're trying to bring a great game.

"If both teams were out of the playoff race, it would still be a great game."

North Penn struck first in the first period. Christian Ahn, with assists from Nick Capasso and Derek Heckler, shoveled the puck past South goalie Aaron King at the 11:02 mark to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.

That lead was short-lived. Thirty-nine seconds later, Dominic Bova knotted the score off an assist from Jake Bauer.

Flick untied the score in the second period. He beat Knight goalie John Roberts at the 6:46 mark with an assist going to Damon DeLaurentis.

Bauer upped the lead to two goals with 43 seconds remaining in the second stanza when he got a pass from Bova and fired it past Roberts.

The South lead ballooned to 5-1 in the third period. Jake Kelinson scored 22 seconds into the period, and Flick followed up at the 7:02 mark with his second goal.

Ahn got one of those back on the power play, but Mike Pilla also scored a power-play goal for South to put the finishing touch on the 6-2 Titan win.

Coyne sounds like he's primed for the playoffs.

"It's great," he said. "Souderton gave us one (a loss); we gave it back.

"East gave us one; we gave it back. North Penn is always in the thick of it. They split with East.

"It's going to be a lot of fun. It's great to have a balance of teams that are really going to push for the trophy. It's great for the league."
