HATFIELD -- Maybe it was the full moon that was out Thursday night.

Or maybe it was the snow day that saw the schools closed for the day.

Whatever the reason, there was an ugly ice hockey game played at Hatfield Ice on Thursday night. Central Bucks South took advantage of Souderton to the tune of a 10-0 mercy rule win.

Ugly, however, has different meanings for different people.

CB South coach Shaun McGinty was happy with the victory but not pleased with the way it was achieved.

"You don't want to blame it on the obvious, but the referees let it get out of control early," he said. "We (McGinty and Souderton coach Matt Montagna) both are about physicality but within the game. It was ugly."

In all, there were nearly 20 penalties called in the game. But, as McGinty noted, there were more which maybe should have been called and weren't.

As for the Indians, well, things didn't go well from the get-go. They allowed five goals in the first period alone.

"Wow, it was brutal," said Montagna. "I think the wheels came off early and we never, ever got back on track. That's a good team that just smelled blood and went right after us."

But Montagna was also philosophical about the whole thing.

"They're kids," he said. "They were just not very focused.

"I've been doing this long enough to know they're just kids. They're not happy with what they did tonight."

One person who did enjoy the way the game went was CB South captain Matt Stoll.

"It's fun," he said, "especially when you know that we have CB West in two weeks and this team tied CB West and we just mercy ruled them. It gives us a little confidence especially coming into CB West week."

But how about the chippiness?

"That's old fashioned hockey," Stoll said. "I kind of like how the refs were letting (us) play.

"That's the kind of hockey I like playing. I tend to play better when it's chippy hockey."

Stoll liked it enough to score two goals. He was the lone Titan with more than one goal, a fact that impressed McGinty.

"I said to them before the game that you've got to win as a team," the Titans’ coach said. "It's not about an individual. It's not about one guy.

"Tonight, we had nine guys score. Everybody's participating. It was a team win tonight."

McGinty also had praise for his goalie, Kevin Dorozinsky. He only faced eight shots in the game and none in the third period.

"Kevin played outstanding," said his coach. "(In the first period) he had three or four shots and he had two huge saves.

"When Kevin came in last year, I said, 'You're like a soccer goalie' and he wasn't understanding. Soccer goalies get 10 shots and they have to make huge saves.

"You're not going to get 30 shots. That's not our make-up as a defensively-minded team."

Suffice it to say that South dominated offensively. In the first period, they got goals from Colin Abbonizio (at 1:11 of the period), Nick Morelli (4:58), Matt Milanesi (6:43), Joe DeLaurentis (12:27) and Reis Braccio (15:421).

The Titans outshot Souderton 11-3 in the period and at one point had three goals on only six shots. The onslaught spelled the end for Indian goalie Joshua Smith.

Souderton's Dawson Anders – who recorded 21 saves - also gave up five goals, but it took South two periods to do it.

In the second, Stoll netted his first goal and Jake Parlow scored the second goal of the stanza. In the third, James Schuler, Frank Carter and Stoll scored with Stoll's goal ending the game at the 13:48 mark.

McGinty continued to talk about his team concept.

"It was a good win," he said. "Everybody helped. It was a team win."

But it certainly wasn’t pretty.

CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 5, NORTH PENN 2
The Titans scored three third-period goals to break away from a pesky Knight squad that battled the defending conference champions to a tie after two periods.
Corey Stouffer’s goal late in the opening period with assists from George Boyle and Andrew Galetta sent the Knights into the second period with a 1-0 lead.
The Titans evened the score when Colin Abbonizio (Reis Braccio assist) scored a power play goal 7:06 into the second period. A goal by Joe DeLaurentis (Evan King assist) put the Titans on top late in the period, but Nathan Oh answered with a goal that knotted the score 2-2, using an assist from Galetta.
The third period belonged to the Titans. Matt Stoll scored an unassisted goal 7:46 into the period to give South a 3-2 lead. Stoll’s second goal of the period (Aidan Ehresman assist) and a goal by Nick Morelli (Colin Abbonizio assist) late in the period put the finishing touches on the win.
South goalie Tim White was credited with 22 saves in the win while Catherine Winstanley recorded 29 saves for the Knights.
