ABINGTON 13, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 3 (6 INNINGS)
Lizzie Lloyd ignored the elements to toss a neat three-hitter in Monday’s win over the Bucks that was halted after six innings because of the mercy rule. The junior hurler fanned nine and walked only three – two in the last inning.
“Lizzie is a competitor,” Abington coach Ellie White said. “It’s her junior year, so she’s out here looking to take the team to the playoffs.
“She’s determined, and nothing really affects her. It doesn’t matter if it’s 95 degrees or 30 degrees like it was today – she’s not affected by anything. I think the last inning the cold got to her a little bit, but up until that point – nothing affects her.”
Lloyd acknowledged that the cold did have an impact as Monday’s game progressed.
“My hands got cold – I couldn’t feel the ball, and everything was just out of control,” she said. “It’s tough to not have been on our field at all, but we’ve been indoors, practicing in the hallway or whatever place we can find.
“The cold and the weather has been brutal on the whole team. It was today too as the game went on, but I think we were able to do okay with it.”
It was a 2-0 game after three innings, but the Bucks got on the scoreboard with a single run in the fourth. Sparked by a bases-loaded triple by Nicolette Ray in the fifth inning, the Ghosts went on top 5-1.
“I’m glad she came back from Penn Charter,” said White of her sophomore third baseman who transferred back to Abington after spending her freshman year at Penn Charter.
The Bucks got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Ghosts exploded for eight runs in the sixth. Pinch hitter Jade Sowell delivered the inning’s big blow – a three-run double.
“We had some big hits, and runs are crucial because you want to get up as soon as possible,” Lloyd said. “You don’t want to let the other team get ahead, even in the beginning.”
Lloyd acknowledged she has high expectations for her team.
“This team has so much talent and drive, much more than any year I’ve been on the team,” she said. “I have big dreams for this team.
“There are a lot of opportunities. A lot of teams lost their pitchers and their catchers. Seniors are a crucial part of the team, and a lot of teams lost that, and I can understand how hard it would be. Our team has a lot of returning players – that’s why we click so well.”
The game was the first of the season for the Ghosts.
“Getting the first game under your belt, no matter who it is – I think that’s one of the most important games of the season,” White said.  “Juts to be able to walk away with a ‘W’ is a good start.
“This was just a total team effort.”
“It’s a big win on a Monday, it’s our first game, and we are now undefeated,” Lloyd said. “It’s a good way to go into the season. Everyone is going to be happy on the bus.”

CHELTENHAM 6, HARRY S TRUMAN 5
Grace DeRosa turned in a solid performance on the mound, and the Lady Panthers exploded for four runs in the sixth to earn the come-from-behind win.
“It was a great team win,” coach Ron Perlstein said. “Everyone contributed. Nobody really stood out. Everybody had their role.
“We showed resilience, not only with the weather, but we had to come back twice. It was a good win. We never quit, and in the end, we won it together.”
The Lady Panthers, who fell behind 1-0 lead, scored two runs in the fourth to go on top 2-1 only to watch the Tigers plate three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead.
Cheltenham answered with a four-run outburst in the bottom of the inning. Nina Jackson got the ball rolling with a leadoff triple to deep right field.
Jackson scored on an error on Jamie Austin’s grounder to the infield, and then it was Maddie Bear delivering a clutch RBI single to knot the score. Madison Gianelle was safe on an error that allowed Bear to score the go-head run (5-4). Leadoff hitter Marissa Mancinelli followed with an RBI single to put the Lady Panthers on top 6-4. The Tigers got one of those runs back in the top of the seventh, thanks to a solo home run by leadoff hitter Cheyenne Jones, but Cheltenham held on for the win.
The Tigers outhit the Lady Panthers 7-5.
“We only had five hits, but every one seemed to be important,” Perlstein said. “The real rub was they had seven errors.
“Our pitcher was outstanding. She went the whole game, seven innings, and only two of the runs were earned because we had three errors too. I was proud of Grace. She didn’t walk anyone. She really pitched well.”

WILLIAM TENNENT 14, LITTLE FLOWER 9
The Panthers earned their second win in as many games, this time coming from behind to earn the non-league win.
“We’re playing pretty well,” Tennent coach Biz Keeny said. “We can hit, but we still made more errors than I want to make.
“We have to get a little bit better defensively. We can’t be in shootouts every day. We’re playing enough defense to keep it close.
“What I was pleased with today – on Friday, we got a lead, we tacked runs on and we held on. Today, we got a lead, we were down, we cut into their lead, and when we really needed to hit the ball the last two innings, we did.”
The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, thanks to a two-run home run by Kate O’Toole, but they found themselves staring at a 5-2 deficit after Little Flower scored five runs in the second.
A two-run outburst in both the third and fourth innings put the Panthers on top 6-5. Sara Keeny delivered the big blow in the fourth inning – a two-run home run.
“The wind was blowing out,” coach Keeny said. “That’s really not her cup of tea, but she got a ball up. It took off, and there was no fence there.”
A single run in the fifth made it a 7-5 game only to watch Little Flower score three runs in the fifth to regain an 8-7 lead. Tennent answered with two runs in the sixth and sealed the win with a five-run seventh. Delivering big hits in the seventh were Whitney Delagol and Jackie Heim.
“These are the games we have to find ways to win,” coach Keeny said.
Laura Petri led the Panthers with a 3-for-5 day at the plate that included a double. Keeny, Heim and O’Toole each had two hits. In addition to hitting a home run, O’Toole also had a triple.
Reilly Dougherty earned the win on the mound.

HATBORO-HORSHAM 5, LANSDALE CATHOLIC 4
Dee Moyer had a huge day at the plate, twice delivering hits to knot the score after the Crusaders took the lead. LC scored two runs in the top of the third, but Moyer answered with a two-run single in the bottom of the inning to knot the score.
That scenario was replayed in the sixth inning. LC scored two runs in the top of the inning, and Moyer delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the frame to knot the score 4-4.
“She had a huge day,” coach Joe DiFilippo said.
The Hatters manufactured a run in the bottom of the seventh to win it when sophomore Jamie Mroz delivered the game-winning RBI with a sacrifice fly. Setting the stage for Mroz were Jen Cader and Jackie Locke, who drew back-to-back walks to open the inning and moved up on a sacrifice bunt.
Sophomore Kaeli Simmons, who threw 1.1 innings, notched her first varsity win. Lexie Campbell and Bryn Griffith also saw action on the mound.
Daria Edwards was 2-for-3 with a triple, and Moyer had a pair of hits, including a double, and four RBIs. Jaynie Black was 2-for-2, and Locke was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Kylie Flagler drew three walks and scored a pair of runs.
