SOL Softball Wrap (4-17-14)

Check out the results for SOL softball teams in action Thursday.

COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 7, HARRY S TRUMAN 5
The Indians - minus their starting pitcher and centerfielder – received a solid outing from sophomore Amanda Camp, who settled into a groove after some early control problems and allowed just four hits.
The sophomore hurler walked five of the first seven batters she faced but then didn’t issue another walk until the sixth inning.
“As the game went on, she got much, much stronger,” coach Hollie Woodard said. “After she settled down, she really did a good job.
“What I liked about it was they kept chipping away because they knew this was Amanda’s first big varsity game, and she’s going to get nervous. We had runners on every single inning. They kept chipping away, the whole game, which was a sign of character because they knew they had to win this game.”
The Indians plated three first-inning runs, benefitting from a single by freshman Taylor Amazeen, a two-run double by Marketa Cruz and a safety squeeze bunt by Marisa Gergel that brought home the third run.
In the bottom of the inning, the Tigers scored a single run, capitalizing on four walks. They added two more in the second to knot the score.
The Indians took a lead they would not lose in the third. Once again Amazeen was in the middle of the action, collecting a one-out double. Cruz followed with an infield single. Bailey Bigler’s RBI double plated the go-head run, and when Gergel delivered a sacrifice fly, the Indians led 5-3. They added two more runs in the seventh, sparked by Bigler’s RBI single.
The Tigers scored two runs in the seventh, but the Indians held on for the win.
“We were really nervous, but they just really understood the impact of this game – the fact that losing this game would drop us down in the rankings as far as what’s happening in the National Conference,” Woodard said. “They knew this was a must-win game for us, and they weren’t going to allow any excuses.
“They came out right away from the first inning, and it was like, ‘All right, we’re going to do this.’ Right now we’re felling good. We played really good against Neshaminy yesterday (in a 10-9 loss). Our only two losses are to the two teams that are tied for first right now. We’re just looking at it like we’re in the hunt because we really want to get a playoff spot.
Cruz led the Indians with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Amazeen and Bigler were both 2-for-4.
Jess O’Neill, who absorbed the loss, accounted for two of Truman’s four hits.
The Indians are 3-2 in league play (4-3 overall) while the Tigers fell to 2-4 in the league (2-7 overall).

“I have to commend Amanda Wolfgang and Jess Dagostino for their leadership of the CB West softball team,” North Penn coach Rick Torresani said.
The Maidens upped their league mark to 4-2 (4-3 overall) while the Bucks fell to 0-6 in league play (1-7 overall).

CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 3, QUAKERTOWN 2

BENSALEM 8, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3
There’s no place like home. At least not for Bensalem.
The Owls pounded out 11 hits and benefitted from six East errors on their way to their third win in as many games on their new home field at Bensalem Ramblers.
“We’ve made a really nice home of our home field at Bensalem Ramblers,” coach Dan Schram said. “We’ve had three nice days of sunshine when we’ve played there.
“We’ve executed since we’ve been down there. It’s a relaxed environment, and a lot of people come to see us play. It’s a home base for us, and the kids are having a good time.”
The Patriots struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. The Owls got one of them back in the bottom of the inning and then took a lead they would not lose with three runs in the third inning. A highlight of the frame was a two-run home run by junior Katelyn Reiss.
In a four-run fourth, pitcher Jackie Morell delivered the big blow – a bases-clearing double that plated three runs.
“We’re paying our dues as a team,” Schram said. “We lost a couple of close games, and that always becomes a learning experience.
“The games we’ve won – we’ve executed and played some good ball. I’m proud of the kids. They came out to play today. They did a nice job. This was one of those days – things really were working for us. Yesterday (at Truman) was a tough loss, and it’s great to come back today.”
Lauren Morell once again led the Owls, delivering her second 3-for-4 performance in as many days. Jenny Campbell was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI, and Reiss, the team’s designated player, was 2-for-3 with a home run, walk, and two RBIs.
For the Patriots, Theresa Haug was 2-for-5.
Jackie Morell earned the win for the Owls while Kayla Ventura absorbed the loss. Both pitchers fanned nine.
“It was a very nice win,” Schram said. “That’s the District One champion and the final eight in the state. It shows we can hang with anyone.”
The Owls, who are still searching for their first SOL win, upped their overall record to 3-4 while the Patriots are 4-4 overall.
