SOL Softball Wrap (5-7-14)

Check out the results for SOL softball teams in action Wednesday.

PENNSBURY 5, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 4
The Golden Hawks gave the Falcons all they could handle, but propelled by a three-run third inning, the Falcons earned the important win.
“They came to hit,” Pennsbury coach Frank McSherry said. “That team is so much better. Those guys have done a great job.
“They’re a different team. They’re there early, they’re taking batting practice, they’re hitting on the screen, and they’re alive on the bench.”
Senior Becca Dougherty put the Golden Hawks on the scoreboard with a two-run home run in the top of the first. Marguerite Salamone cut that lead in half with a solo blast in the bottom of the inning.
“She hit that ball – there’s a baseball field with a high black fence that’s probably 15 feet away from our field, and she hit a ball over that fence into the baseball field 25 feet deep,” McSherry said. “She must have hit it 240-245 feet. She crushed it.”
The Golden Hawks led 3-1 after tacking on a single run in the third inning, but sparked by a two-run home run by Dani Litwin, the Falcons took a lead they would not lose with three runs in the bottom of the frame to go on top 4-3. The Falcons added a run in the fourth, but the Hawks answered with a run in the fifth for the 5-4 final.
Salamone finished the day a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI, a home run, two doubles and three runs scored. Litwin was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a double, home run and one run scored.
Dougherty had a big day at the plate for the Golden Hawks, finishing the day 2-for-2 with two RBIs. She also was walked twice to reach base on all four trips to the plate. Katelyn Gaudet was 3-for-4, Mikayla Becker was 2-for-3, and Amanda Sharp was 2-for-4 on a day that saw the Golden Hawks pound out 11 hits.
McSherry tipped his hat to Rock South third baseman Melanie Wilkinson.
“She played a great game,” he said. “She took a bunch of hits away from us.
“She made a couple of great plays that got them out of innings. We could have scored a lot more runs. She really played well.”
The Falcons are 9-3 in league play (9-7 overall) while the Golden Hawks are 6-6 (8-7 overall).

CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 7, QUAKERTOWN 0
Hailey Warner tossed a complete game three-hit shutout, fanning five and walking none to lead the Titans to the win.
“I’m just so pleased with the way she’s been throwing,” coach Dan Hayes said. “She’s given up some home runs over the course of the year, but even with that being said, she’s really, really doing well for us.”
The Titans plated a single run in the fourth and blew the game open with a five-run fifth.
In the big inning, the Titans capitalized on RBI doubles from Taylor Marinelli, Maddie Decker and Julia Formicola as well as singles by Hope Darreff, Taylor Risich (RBI) and Kate McNesby.
Marinelli (2-for-4, double) and Decker (2-for-4, double) led the Titans’ 10-hit attack. Marinelli, who recently made the switch to left field, also pulled the trigger on a double play.
The Titans are 9-3 in league play (10-6 overall) while the Panthers fell to 3-9 (6-9 overall).

HARRY S TRUMAN 6, ABINGTON 1
Jess O’Neil allowed just five hits and struck out 12 while walking none in a complete game win. The Tigers’ mound ace has walked just eight batters in 14 games this season.
“She doesn’t walk batters,” coach Gretchen Cammiso said. “She’s around the plate.
“Even though Pennsbury scored some runs (in Tuesday’s 3-1 loss), I thought she was pretty effective against them. She has been really hitting her spots and is able to go in and out and up and down, and she’s able to keep a lot of girls off balance.
“She’s not overpowering, but she doesn’t go deep a lot. It’s a rarity for her to walk people. I guess I’m starting to take it for granted.”
O’Neil helped her own cause with an RBI single. Jess O’Brien led the Tigers’ nine-hit attack with a 2-for-3 effort.
Aubrey Cataldi accounted for Abington's only run with a solo shot over the centerfield fence in the top of the fifth inning.  It was her first varsity home run.
The Tigers are 5-6 in league play (6-9 overall) while the Ghosts fell to 1-11 in the league (5-11 overall).

BENSALEM 7, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 5 (Tuesday, May 6)
The Owls got big production out of a pair of sophomores – Lauren Morell (3-for-4, three runs scored) and Carley Smith (2-for-4, RBI, two runs scored) - as well as designated player Katlelynn Reiss, who was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Morell and Smith, who bat out of the one-two spots, scored five of Bensalem’s seven runs.
“They had five of our 11 hits, and they give us great hope for the future,” coach Dan Schram said. “They’re our future, and they’re two wonderful young ladies.
“Lauren is absolutely our team MVP. She leads our team in just about every offensive statistic. She does it quietly, but she’s the secret to our success on a daily basis.
“Overall, it’s nice to see some of my younger kids stepping up and playing as well as they are. I have a good group of kids. Bensalem softball is going to continue. We’re graduating several seniors, but we have a nice group coming up in the middle school, and they’re going to be guided by veteran leadership.”
The Indians had some big hitters of their own. Bailey Bigler was 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, delivering a two run home run in the fifth, but by that time, the Owls – thanks to a four-run fourth – led 7-3. Melissa Gergel was 2-for-3 with a double and run scored, and Halle Segal was one-for-3 with a home run.
“They’re a really good team,” Schram said.
The Owls, who continue to play well at Ramblers Field, are 3-8 in league play (7-8 overall) while the Indians are 5-6 (7-7 overall).
