SOL Swimmers Excel at Cardinal Classic

SOL swimmers excelled at the Cardinal Classic Invitational on Saturday.

The Cardinal Classic Invitational at Upper Dublin has quickly become a favorite among Suburban One League teams and with good reason.

The meet features good races and fast times and provides a good barometer for teams as they head into the holiday break.

It was the final Cardinal Classic for Upper Dublin senior Michael Jensen and he made it count, thrilling the home crowd with three individual records and two on relays.

Jenson won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:49.27, lowering his own school and pool record of 1:52.72 set in 2014.

He also won the 100 backstroke in another pool record time of 48.43. The previous record was 49.16, set in 2011 by Haverford’s Shane Ryan.

Jensen’s third individual record came off a leadoff relay split. He posted a time of 20.24 to open the 200 freestyle relay, bettering his own school and pool record of 20.50, set earlier this year.

The 200 freestyle relay of Jensen, Wyatt Amdor, Alex Flynn and and Odgen Leyens took first in a school record time of 1:24.62. The previous mark of 1:26.16 was set by Jensen, Stephen Williamson, Bart Scherpbier and Cooper Tollen in 2014.

Upper Dublin’s 200 medley relay of Jensen, Amdor, Devon Polak and Leyens won in a pool record time of 1:33.58, lowering the time of 1:34.91 set in 2012 by Bobby Bantley, Cooper Tollen, Michael Jensen and Eric Jensen.

“I just wanted to race,” Jensen said. “We’re coming off of junior nationals last week so we’re breaking down and getting back into it this week.

“We suited up and just wanted to see what we can do. I didn’t have any expectations at all.”

The meet features competition from a variety of area teams as well as teams from outside of District One. This year two District Three teams, Hershey and Exeter, made the trip.

“Hershey is a really good team and they’ve got some top guys,” Jensen said. “You never know what’s going to happen at a meet like this so you just go in and swim your best.”

Jensen will swim at California next year.

“I just want to go fast and put myself into a good position for college,” he said. “I want to finish this season strong and maybe win at states.

“This was definitely a good meet and a lot of fun. We just swam North Penn on Thursday and that went very well so there’s a good vibe going through the team right now and this meet really helped that.”

Amdor won the 200 butterfly (52.11) and took second in the 50 freestyle (21.75), Flynn won the 100 freestyle (48.43) and took second in the 200 freestyle (1:45.54) while Polak took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.03), Jake Easton was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.12) and Scott Luttmann was third in the 100 freestyle (48.91) to round out the top three finishes for the Cardinals.

For the Upper Dublin girls, Jenna Johns finished second in the 50 freestyle (24.46) and third in the 100 freestyle (52.92).

The 400 freestyle relay of Saemmi Yoon, Abbie Amdor, Rebecca Pendleton and Johns took third (3:40.01).

The Pennridge girls also had an outstanding meet, winning five individual events and two relays.

Morgan Scott and Brittany Weiss each won two individual events.

Scott topped the field in the 200 freestyle (1:50.13) and the 100 freestyle (50.25) while Weiss won the 100 butterfly (55.47) and 100 breaststroke (1:04.29). Scott’s time in the 100 freestyle eclipsed the pool record of 52.47 set earlier this year by Upper Dublin’s Johns.

Hannah Zurmuhl won the 50 freestyle in 24.06 and took second in the 100 freestyle (52.88).

The Rams’ 200 medley relay of Anna Beno, Weiss, Scott and Zurmuhl took first place and the pool record with their time of 1:45.89, lowering the standard of 1:46.60 set in 2014 by Hershey’s Emily Nolan, Vivi Tafuto, Allie Raab and Olivia Duck.

The same foursome also won the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.55).

“It’s really exciting just to get into our fast suits and get some good swims in,” Zurmuhl said. “This is a good preview for states and it’s definitely nice to get good competition here.

“I think we had some good races and it’s a nice way to end the year. I think we’re looking forward to doing even more things next year.”

Hatboro-Horsham’s Stuart Sumner, Mike Joyce, Tim McPoyle and Andy Thomas won the boys 400 freestyle relay (3:17.93).

The Hatters’ 200 freestyle relay of John Scully, McPoyle, Thomas and Sumner finished second (1:30.19) and Thomas took third in the 200individual medley (1:59.18).

For the Hatboro-Horsham girls, Barbara Schmele tied for second in the 100 backstroke with Tomomi Nakano of Hershey (1:00.12).

David Kneiss of Neshaminy posted his first-ever win at this event, taking the 200 freestyle in a school record time of 1:43.09. The previous record of 1:44.45 was set in 2014 by Steven Keashon.

He was also second in the 100 backstroke in 53.10, breaking the previous school record of 54.40 set in 1993 by Sean Gallagher.

The Redskins’ 200 freestyle relay of Kneiss, Michael Kalika, Josh Hartley and John Stay took third in 1:30.46, also a school record. The old standard was 3:21.40 and was set in 1997 by Andy Hodge, Mike Lee, Jason Huhn and Vitale Beregovoi.

Council Rock South’s boys 200 medley relay of Greg Roytman, Matt O’Donnell, Nate Olhasso and Andrew Harman took third (1:42.47).
