Fourteen Suburban One wrestlers earned medals at the PIAA State Wrestling Championships Saturday at the Giant Center in Hershey.
Headlining the group was Council Rock South’s Billy Rappo, who won his second state title.
Rappo cruised in the finals majoring Manheim Township’s Matt Grossman (37-8), 12-0.
As much as Rappo wanted the state title, he also wanted to be invited to the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic in Pittsburg later this month. The prestigious Dapper Dan pits senior Pennsylvania All-Stars against the rest of the country.
Norristown’s Shane Springer brought home his third state medal. After earning silver as a sophomore and fifth last year, he once again ascended to the second step from the top of the podium.
His finals opponent was Cody Wiercioch, who won the Class AA 152-pound championship two years ago at Charleroi before transferring to Canon McMillan. Wiercioch won the bout 7-4.
Teammate Brett Harner (160) took another step up, placing third after garnering a fourth a year ago and eighth as a freshman.
Also taking third was Council Rock South’s P.J. Steinmetz in his first trip to the big stage. The bronze medal was even more impressive because he was sorely hampered by an elbow injury.
Pennridge sophomore Scott Parker (106) and Council Rock North junior John Dutrow (132) both finished fourth. For Dutrow it was his first medal in three trips to Hershey.
Fifth place medals went to Norristown’s Zach Fuentes (106) and Central Bucks West’s Chris Jastrzebski.
Tommy Stokes of Bensalem placed sixth, and Pennsbury junior Josh DiSanto earned his first medal in three attempts, finishing seventh. Council Rock South’s Dan Martoccio (106) also finished seventh.
Mikey Springer (138) of Norristown, Matt Jorgenson (220) of Quakertown and Tommy Trampe (285) of Council Rock South finished in eighth place.
