SOL Wrestlers Still Alive for Hershey Gold

SOL WRESTLERS STILL IN THE HUNT FOR HERSHEY GOLD

Eight Suburban One League wrestlers remain in the championship bracket in the quarterfinals.  Meanwhile, five wrestlers from the SOL are in the consolation bracket with an opportunity to reach the bronze medal match.  Kordell Rush (Pennridge) was most impressive to start the afternoon off for the SOL with a dominating 5-0 victory over super frosh William Kaldes of Cumberland Valley.  Rush showed that he is peaking at the right time at the Giant Center, as he wrestled with confidence and a physical style that works in Hershey.  He will take on Northampton’s Dan Moran, the NE-1 in a 106-pound quarterfinal bout.  CR South’s Riley Palmer will join Rush in the quarters after a 6-3 victory over Charlie Lenox (McDowell. He will battle last year’s runner-up at 106, Connor Sheehan from Solanco.

Scott Parker (Pennridge) stated his case with a fall in his preliminary bout over recently returned Zach Ulerick from Middletown.  He will lock up with Roshaun Cooley (Williamsport) in the quarters, with a showdown with Ethan Lizak (Parkland) looming in the 120-pound semis.

At 132 pounds, Bensalem’s Tommy Stokes once again used his quickness from the bottom position to score a 5-3 decision over Joel Bowers (Punxsutawney) to advance to the quarters against Cameron Coy (Penn Trafford), the Southwest regional champ.

CB East’s Francesco Fabozzi (145) was workmanlike with a series of takedowns, securing an 11-6 win to move on to the quarters.  He will wrestle Spring Grove’s Michael Hartman, a surprise winner in the prelims.  Norristown’s Mikey Springer was a 9-3 winner in the 152-pound prelims and will wrestle another Spring Grove wrestler in the quarters, Mason Bentzel.  Springer appears to have the clearest path of any SOL wrestler to reach the finals.  Springer’s teammate, Rashon Lusane advanced to the quarters, defeating NW-1 Trent Zdarko (Oil City) 2-0 with a shrug takedown in the first and superior riding on top to secure the win at 170 pounds.

Alex Price, the 182-pounder from North Penn, blanked Jared Wehrmann (Wallenpaupack) 7-0 and will face Northern York’s Kyle Koser in a quarterfinal match at the top of the bracket.

All three of the SOL’s 126 pounders survived preliminary losses with wins in the wrestle backs.  The Southeast Regions wrestlers all have Hershey experience, and will look to medal with a win in the second round of consolations.  Ben Ross (Pennridge), Kolton Veit (Souderton), and Dan Martoccio (CRS) will await the quarterfinal losers in their respective brackets.  All advanced Thursday night with 5-1 wins over their opponents.

North Penn’s Jeff Reimel rebounded after an uncalled slam in a scramble to pin Cedar Cliff’s Jake Collelo in a 152-pound wrestle-back.  He will also await his opponent to drop down, and it will be the loser of the Springer/Bentzel match.  And Kyle Gentile (Pennridge) kept his medal hopes alive with a 7-2 victory over Jared Siegrist from Manheim Central in the first round of the consolations.

In the team race, Franklin Regional leads with 13.5 points with a total of six wrestlers all in the quarterfinals.  SOL teams in contention include Pennridge in 7th place with eight points and four wrestlers still alive - two in the championship side, and two down below in the consolations.  North Penn with two wrestlers still wrestling is in the top 25 with five points in 24th place.  Norristown with two wrestlers in the quarters, hold four points and is 31st.  The only other team with two wrestlers from the SOL is CR South (42nd -3 pts.)  Although only 13 SOL wrestlers remain, medal chances look good for all 13, however, some could face each other in the consis.
