Council Rock South Ambushed by Central Dauphin

Golden Hawks Eliminated at PIAA Team Championships

Council Rock South could not reach the podium at the 2016 PIAA AAA Team Championships after dropping down into the consolations Friday afternoon at the hands of Belle Vernon 48-18.  The Golden Hawks rebounded in round two of the wrestle-backs with a victory over District 3 Champion, Cumberland Valley 29-24, but were eliminated from the tournament by District 3 Runner-up Central Dauphin 48-16.

The Hawks knew they had a tough road ahead after taking down Cathedral Prep Thursday night 34-28 with Belle Vernon up next in the quarterfinals.  Belle Vernon overpowered CR South as they could only manage four victories on the afternoon, posted by Kyle Kutney (120), Cary Palmer (126), Riley Palmer (138), and Joe Doyle (195).  Zack Trampe sat this one out due to some soreness from Thursday’s match against Cathedral Prep.

Trampe returned in the consolation bracket at 132 pounds and won by decision over Cumberland Valley’s Wyatt Long 8-4 to seal the 29-24 victory for the Golden Hawks.  CR South’s Cary Palmer won in overtime at 120 by sudden victory 9-7 over CV’s Connor Smith prior to Trampe’s victory to put the Golden Hawks ahead 26-24 after trailing the match 23-24 after the bout at 120 pounds.  The Hawks picked up big bonus points from Riley Palmer (138) and Lucas Martoccio (145) as they started the match off with back-to-back falls for South to jump out to 12-0 lead.  Dylan Schwartz added a win at 160 with a decision over Quentin Milliken (CV), 5-2, and Joe Doyle extended South’s lead to 20-10 at 195 pounds with a pin fall.  Golden Hawk John Anderson snuck by Jake Black at heavyweight 3-2 to push the lead to 23-14 for South.  With seven victories, three by fall, it was enough for CR South to advance to round three of the consolations to battle Central Dauphin.

Central Dauphin and Cumberland Valley were involved in a controversial bout in their District 3 final as some unsportsmanlike behavior between the coaches caused an ugly scene, nonetheless criteria H decided their championship tilt which had CV on top 29-28.

The CD Rams were too much for the Golden Hawks, as once again CR South could only grab four bouts in the dual with Trampe, Riley Palmer, Schwartz and Doyle notching the victories.  Nonetheless, with quality opponents each match, CR South walked away with valuable post-season experience, and confidence as the individual post-season looms this weekend.

SOL League sites for this Saturday February 20th are Continental @ Pennridge (9:30am start/Finals 4:00pm), American @ Norristown, and National @ Pennsbury.

It was an all-SOL final and consolation final at the “Shoemaker Scuffle” hosted by Radnor this past Saturday as North Penn defeated Hatboro-Horsham 54-18 in this all-Continental championship bout, and Norristown (American) downed Pennsbury (National) 41-37 in the 3rd place match.  North Penn closed out their impressive 2015-16 dual campaign with a 17-4 overall record and 7-0  Continental Conference record, while the Wrestling Warriors from H-H evened their season record at 8-8 with victories over Springfield (Delco)  57-15 and Norristown 49-16.

At Neshaminy Saturday, the ‘Skins hosted the Redskin Duals, and went 4-1 on the day suffering their only loss to Pottsville 39-30 to finish their season at 18-6.   Several other SOL teams competed from all three conferences including Bensalem, CB South, CB West, and Plymouth-Whitmarsh.  P-W got the best of CB South 36-26 and CB West 50-12.  South took down West in another battle of Central Bucks 48-9.  Both Bensalem and P-W finished 3-2 on the day.

Next season the SOL Conferences will see significant changes in the leagues as Quakertown and Hatboro-Horsham move into the American Conference, replacing  Norristown and Upper Merion who are departing for the PAC 10 in wrestling.  William Tennent moves to the Continental, and the National will remain the same minus Tennent.  Thus, the American Conference will have eight teams, and the Continental and National will both only have seven teams respectively.

Wissahickon closed its season with a victory over traditional Inter-Ac League power Germantown Academy Friday afternoon 36-30.  Upper Dublin crowned two champs at the Interboro Invitational in Colin Devlin (138) and Henry Winebrake (195).  Upper Moreland did the same at Central H.S. in the Lancer Invitational with Matt Amy (120) and Patrick Walker (195) winning championships, along with two runner-ups in Jason Amy (113) and Keegan Hannigan at 220.

Look for rankings later in the week…
