COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH MISSES OUT ON TRIP TO HERSHEY

Council Rock South hosted Wilson West Lawn (D3-3rd) Tuesday night in the preliminary round of the State Duals after snow delayed the match Monday.  CR South finished in third place at the District One (AAA) Team Championships this past weekend after downing Garnet Valley for the second time in as many days.  Friday in the quarterfinals they knocked off the #4 seeded Jags on criteria 28-27.  After losing to the #1 seeded Boyertown Bears 41-20, #5 South beat Pennridge in the consolation semifinals 40-25 to advance to the State Duals.

The Golden Hawks took on GV Saturday afternoon in the 3rd Place bout and came out victorious once again with another narrow 26-22 victory.  Lucas Martoccio (CRS) closed out the match at 152 with the Golden Hawks down 20-22 in the team score with a pin in the first period over Ryan Mortimer (GV).

In the preliminary round of the PIAA (AAA) Dual Championships, South found themselves all tied up at 26-26 after the 152-pound bout in which Martoccio lost 3-1 to Wilson’s Parker Eidle.  With one bout remaining at 160, South’s Joe Doyle could not overcome Wilson’s Jacob Yancey, as Yancey won by major decision 15-5.  South lost the majority of the closely contested bouts, and despite their lightweights winning four matches in a row, it was not enough even with bonus points.  Nick Palmer (113) and Zack Trampe (120) posted tech falls, and Dan Martoccio (126) had a :34 second fall after Riley Palmer won by decision over Tyler Wilkes 9-5, putting South ahead 23-17.  Final score Wilson West Lawn 30-Council Rock South 26.

AA District One Dual Championships

Springfield was the only Suburban One League team entered in the four-team event.  Seeded #1, the Spartans took on #4 Bishop McDevitt from District 12 at Upper Dublin this past Saturday.  With four forfeits in the match, two for each team, McDevitt won eight of the 10 contested bouts for a 43-20 victory.

With only one team able to qualify for the State Duals in AA, Springfield was eliminated since there were no wrestle backs.  The Spartans got off to a strong start with 152-pounder Jared Krugman winning a major decision 15-7.  John Paul Ungurean followed with a major of his own, downing Tim Butwin 12-3 to put Springfield up 8-0.  But that was all they could do on the mat, as they added 12 points with forfeits to Eddie Graham (195) and John McClinton (220) to add to their lead 20-9.  But they lost eight in a row as McDevitt closed them out with the Spartans surrendering 12 points with the two forfeits.

Lower Moreland captured its fourth straight AA D1 title after downing New Hope-Solebury 46-27 in their first bout, and defeating Bishop McDevitt 34-26 in the final.  The Lions will take on the top ranked team in the state, Bethlehem Catholic in Hershey Thursday.

Ice and Power Outages Cancel League Duals Yet Again

Senior Nights around the league will have to wait, and league championships in question will remain in question as Mother Nature has shut the local wrestling world down yet again.  My guess you won’t even been able to read this article until Thursday…

In the National Conference, Council Rock South will surely walk away with the title. A new champ may be emerging out of the American Conference, as Justin Giovinco has his Colonials from Plymouth-Whitmarsh undefeated in the league.  P-W knocked off Norristown last week rather handily 42-26, and then downed the Cardinals from Upper Dublin 50-16.  So only Upper Moreland can prevent the Colonials from capturing the American title outright.  If the Bears win, Norristown, P-W, and Upper Moreland would all have a piece of the crown at 6-1 in the league.

The Continental, on the other hand, still has some serious competitions ahead before it all will get sorted out.  But for now, Pennridge, North Penn, and Quakertown all hold a share of the trophy.  Souderton will get a chance to play spoiler at North Penn, and CB South can do the same versus Pennridge.  Quakertown will host the Bucks from CB West and should be able to hold the ship steady there to finish 7-1.  Unless either Souderton at North Penn or CB South at Pennridge can upset the apple cart, the potential for a three-way tie will remain.  It may very well be that CB East, with a win over the visiting Panthers next week, could at least make this a co-championship.

The fact that the SOL does not use tie-breaking criteria for league championships is why this scenario is often played out with eight teams in each conference.  For wrestling, it may be a time to use the league championships as the tiebreaker for the league title…just a thought.  That being said, at this point, I’d like to see the real season start, the individual postseason, I can’t wait!

Mea culpa:  My apologies to Wissahickon and Coach Stags, as they won the Individual League competition last season, not Norristown.

SOL Dual Team Rankings:
1-CR South
2-Pennridge
3-Quakertown
4-CR North
5-North Penn
Under Consideration:  Plymouth-Whitemarsh, Neshaminy, CB East, Norristown, Truman
