SOL Wrestling Notes (12-8-12)

Check out some of the strong showings by the SOL at Saturday’s opening tournaments.

Abington:
On Saturday, Abington finished fifth out of 12 teams at the Brandywine Heights Tournament.  Mike Molz at the 132 lb weight class and Alden Shea at 152 both placed third.  Mike McCaughey took fourth at the 138 lb weight class while Austin Hain at 106 and Kyle Pederzani at 145 both placed 5th.  Abington next sees action at Bensalem on Wednesday night and hosts its own dual meet tournament on Saturday Dec 15.

Central Bucks West:
The Bucks finished second to Upper Dublin at the New Hope-Solebury Tournament on Saturday.

Council Rock North:
The Indians were 3-2 at the Brian Bealer Memorial Bear Duals on Saturday, defeating Dallas (45-28), St. Mark’s (DE) (35-29) and Upper Moreland (57-14). The Indians fell to Owen J Roberts and Bethlehem Liberty.

Council Rock South:
The Golden Hawks finished third at Saturday's Nazareth Invitational with 177.5 points, finishing behind only Nazareth (222.5 points) and Dallastown (182.0 points). Rock South crowned a pair of champions - Dan Martoccio (120) and PJ Steinmetz (195).

Neshaminy:
Neshaminy was 2-3 at Saturday's Quakertown Duals, notching wins over Hazleton (45-27) and host Quakertown (45-27). The Redskins lost to Upper Perk (45-27), Pittston Area (39-33) and Wyoming Valley West (42-24). Kody Lupfer (182) went 5-0 on the day with four falls. Sam Rudollph (113), Ryan O'Connor (145) and freshman Bruce Graeber (285) all went 4-1 on the day.

North Penn:
The Knights finished second in a 17-team field at the Southeastern PA Wrestling Classic on Saturday, closing out the day with a score of173.5 and finishing only behind champion Spring-Ford (213.5). North Penn crowned three champions:  Joey O’Brien at 132, Alex Price at 182 and George Shipp at 220. Chris Barr finished third at 170 and Sofiane Bensmail was third at 120. Marcus Myers took fourth place, Jeffery Reimel finished fifth in his weight class, and Cameroon Healy was sixth. Mikey O'Brien captured seventh place. North Penn will travel to Pennridge on Wednesday night.

Pennsbury:
Pennsbury captured second place at the Saucon Valley Tournament and had the following medal winners:
Champions - Jason Bing 126, Josh DiSanto 132
2nd Place - Connor Joyce 113, Anthony DeImidio 138, Tom Cwenar 170, Mike O'Brien 182
3rd Place - Dom Martoccio 120, Luke Kowal 152, Ryan Healy 160

Souderton:
Souderton finished 12th at Saturday's Solanco Mule Classic. The Indians' place winners were:

182: Ryan Derstine (8th)

Upper Dublin:
The Flying Cardinals captured first place at the New Hope Tournament Saturday with 161.5 points. Yaroslav Tochinski pinned Archbishop Wood’s John-Patrick Roseny in 47 seconds to capture the championship at 220.

Wissahickon: 
Pat Fennell was the champion at 160 at the Southeastern PA Wrestling Classic on Saturday. Dan Schueren captured third at 152.

15th Annual Solanco Mule Classic
Several District 1 individual standouts had good starts to their seasons in a tough tournament field. Souderton’s Kolton Veit captured the 120 lb championship. Hatboro-Horsham’s Phil Torresani (113 lbs) reached the finals for the third time in his career with an impressive 6-4 sudden victory over Solanco’s Connor Sheehan in the semifinals. Torresani could not overcome a second period takedown by St. Paul’s (MD) Ryan Friedman in a 5-2 loss in the finals. Souderton’s Bobby Jenne (145) and Hatboro-Horsham’s Connor Bodnar (152) both reached the consi-finals and took fourth place. Garnet Valley’s Michael Marino (126 lbs) captured the bronze in the tourney’s toughest weight class with a fall in the consolation finals over Sun Valley’s Alex Elliot. Marino was upset in the semifinals by Solanco’s Ronnie Perry 6-3. Perry went on to upset returning 106 lb PIAA (AAA) runner-up Matt Grossman with a dominant performance, winning 7-2 in the finals to garner the Outstanding Wrestler Award. Garnet’s Ben Tuohey won the 106 lb title.
