Pennridge & CR South Advance in Consolation Bracket
By Glenn Kaiser

Hershey, PA-Pennridge and Council Rock South rebounded nicely Friday morning in the Giant Center with round one wins in the consolations of the 2023 PIAA (AAA) Team Championships. Pennridge took down District 3 power Cumberland Valley 35-33, and Council Rock South handled Shikellamy 37-21. Both advance to Round-2 matchups with quarterfinal losers.  It’ll be Cannon MacMillan or D1’s Spring-Ford for Pennridge and Nazareth or Central Dauphin for CR South.

Pennridge got a huge fall from Talan Hogan at 172-pounds with his signature cradle, and Ryan Gallagher posted a major 11-2 decision at 160 just prior to put the Rams ahead 10-9 after four bouts.  Chase Washington was vibrant in his 10-3 victory at 215-pounds, and Riley Cullen decked CV’s Ty King before moving to the lightweights giving the Rams a 19-15 advantage on the scoreboard.

A surprise forfeit by CV to the Rams’ Colby Martinelli at 107-pounds set up a monster match with Cole Coffin and CV’s Phil Montes.  Coffin delivered with another fall for the ‘Ridge, essentially closing out CV’s chances for a victory.  Coffin said after the match that even he was surprised with the move forfeiting to his teammate Martinelli, and indicated that it didn’t matter who’d they put out, as it was his job to perform well and get the job done, and that he did. Quinn McBride, back in the Pennridge’s lineup continued to wrestle well, winning at 121-pounds and putting the Rams up 35-15.  CV won the last three-bouts by fall (Pennridge kept Sam Kahn’s off the mat) to make the final score 35-33.

CR South’s lightweight trio of Connor Lenahan (107), Luke Reitter (114) and Pat Woloshyn did it again, posting three-straight victories for the Golden Hawks, and Roman Vega added a major decision at 127 in a four-match stretch totaling 17-points to close out Shik 37-21.  The dual started at 145-pounds with South getting a fall from Gavin Cole at 152 and back-to-back majors from Bek Sadriddinvov (160) and Aiden Murray (172) for 14 points.  The Golden Hawks won eight matches while forfeiting one, Ajay Bhatt had a decision win as CRS looked much improved after the BECA beat-down.
