Souderton and North Penn made history on Wednesday night when the Knights hosted the first official girls’ wrestling match in District 1.

“Nobody’s really done this,” Souderton girls’ coach Chris Atikinson said. “There have been schools that had some matches. Even Souderton last year – when we wrestled our boys’ team with another boys’ team, if they happened to have a girl - if we could get a match, we’d wrestle a match.

“Every team from K through 12 has their roster, and we were doing our best to give every girl that was in attendance tonight a match of some sort to make things competitive and just have a good night celebrating girls’ wrestling.”

The event was held to showcase girls’ wrestling, and if the crowd response is worth anything, it was a rousing success.

Stealing the spotlight was the 45-pound match pitting North Penn’s Laura Troutman against Souderton’s Adrianna Holly.

“They brought the house down – it was awesome watching them wrestling,” Atkinson said. “Anyone in attendance would tell you it was so adorable watching them wrestle.

“All in all, it was a successful night. We did exactly what we wanted to do, which was bring awareness to girls’ wrestling, and I thought we had a very good night.”

The night's lone official match was at 112 pounds where North Penn's Savannah Lanyi defeated Souderton's Emily Farr by fall in overtime.
