SOUTHEAST REGION DISTRICT ONE COACHES HONORS SOL HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Saturday evening Eight SOL Wrestlers, Coaches, Officials & Contributors to be honored at

5:30 pm prior to the SE Regional finals at Oxford H.S.  The Class of 2021 & 2022 will both be honored this year due to COVID restrictions last year.

CLASS OF 2021

Chuck Hangey (Quakertown 1968) Official-Mr. Hangey has been a PIAA Official for the past 23 years, beginning his career in 1990.  He has officiated multiple District & Regional tournaments, and officiated in Hershey at the PIAA Championships in 2008-09.  Mr. Hangey has officiated both middle and high school along with MAWA & Eastern Nationals.  Chuck wrestled at Quakertown for two years on the varsity team, winning a sectional title his senior year as the captain in 1968, and garnered All-BuxMont League honors in 1968.  He also played football and baseball at Q-town.  Additionally, he coached the Quakertown Youth Program from 1972 to 1982 during which the club won three championships.  Mr. Hangey currently is employed by AGD as a Line Supervisor and plans on retiring soon.  His only regret-“I only wish I was as good as my son as wrestler…LOL!”  Presenter-Current and long-time Quakertown Head Coach, Mr. Kurt Handel.

 

Matt Harkins (Hatboro-Horsham 2011) Wrestler:  Mr. Harkins is a 2x PIAA Medalist (4th in both 2010 & 2011 @ 119lbs). Matt is the all-time wins leader in H-H Wrestling history with a record of 153-23 with 70 pins.  His career winning percentage is .869.  He was a 4x Sectional Champ (2008 thru 2011), 3x District Champ (2009 thru 2011 and a Regional Champ (2011).  He has won a championship and/or placed at multiple prestigious tournaments during his stellar career including 3x Wetzel Holiday Classic Champ (4x finalist), King of the Mountain 4th/5th/7th, Solanco Mule Classic Champ, Southeastern Pennsylvania (SEPA) Champ and 5th at Escape the Rock.  Mr.  Harkins was selected multiple times as team captain and garnered multiple SOL All-League, All-Intell/Courier Times honors and District I and PIAA All-Academic awards.  Matt captained H-H. Matt’s collegiate career was cut short at Ursinus due to injury.  Matt is currently employed as a designer for OCS.  Matt is not present, as he is skiing in Vermont.  Presenter-His former high school coach Mr. Glenn Kaiser.   Accepting his award in his absence, is his father, Mr. Bill Harkins.

 

Bob Koffler (Cheltenham 1956/Syracuse 1959) Wrestler/Coach/Contributor:  Mr. Koffler has coached wrestling for 55+ years, retiring at the age of 80.  Mr. Koffler was undefeated in dual meet competition in high school, four out of his five years finishing his career with a 49-5-2 overall record.  In 1956, he garnered a District title and was the Regional runner-up.  Bob continued his wrestling at Division I Syracuse University, while there he competed in the Olympic Trials.  Mr. Koffler coached at Germantown Academy and Cheltenham.  At Cheltenham, as mostly a volunteer assistant coach, he was a loyal assistant for eight different head coaches over the years.  Additionally, he was involved in the Beat the Streets program and authored a book, parts of which were featured in Amateur Wrestling News.  Mr. Koffler earned postgraduate degrees at both Boston University and University of Penn.  This true Renaissance Man, artist, professor, wrestler and coach was an Emeritus Professor at the Art Institute of Pennsylvania after his retirement.  Bob was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame-Pennsylvania Chapter, earning the “Lifetime Service to Wrestling” honor in 2021.  Presenter-Mr. Denny Kellon, District 1 Chairman.  Accepting the award in his absence is current assistant Cheltenham coach Mr. August Gershwin

 

Joe Stolfi (Souderton 2011/Bucknell 2016) Wrestler:  Mr. Stolfi was a 2x PIAA Medalist (4th in 2010 & 3rd in 2011 @ 215lbs.), he won three Sectional titles and three District titles (2009 thru 2011) and was a Regional champion in 2010.  Joe was a NHSCA Junior National Champ in 2010 and the Outstanding Wrestler at the 2011 Secional Tournament and OW in 2010 at Jim Thorpe.  In addition, he was a 2x High School All-American.  Mr. Stolfi holds the all-time career win mark at Souderton HS with 140 wins (140-28 with 84 career falls).  Mr. Stolfi continued his wrestling career at the collegiate level at Bucknell University.  There he had an overall record of 120-41, he placed in the EIWA’s 4x and was 3rd in 2013; Champion in 2014; 2nd in 2015; 2nd in 2016 and was a 4x NCAA Division I Qualifier.  He captained the Bisons for 3 years (2014-2016).  He holds the records for NCAA Division I Most Pins in 2015, 65 Career Pins - Most in Bucknell History and the Bucknell Single Season Most Pins (23 pins).  He was a 3X Bucknell Team MVP and OW at the 2010 Lock Haven Open.  Additionally, he won the William A. Graham IV Most Outstanding Wrestler Award 3x. He currently is a Producer at The Graham Company responsible for new business development.  (The Graham Company buys insurance for large businesses and takes the lead on their risk management initiatives).   Presenter-His former high school coach at Souderton, Mr. Stan Smith.

 

CLASS OF 2022

 

Matthew Martoccio (Council Rock South 2011/Kutztown University 2016) Wrestler:  Mr. Martoccio is a 2x PIAA medalist (8th-2009 and 6th 2010) and was a 4x Sectional Champion and 4x District One Champ (2008 thru 2011) and the 2011 SE Regional Champ at 140-pounds for the Golden Hawks.  He captured the championship belt at ETR (2009), was crowned King of the Mountain in 2009 and won the Bethlehem Holiday Classic in 2010.  Matt was a 4x SOL All-League selection as well and ran X-Country for CRS for three seasons.  His scholastic career record was 145-40, qualifying for states three times.  Mr. Martoccio continued wrestling collegiately at Division II-Kutztown University.  There he amassed 89 wins becoming an All-American 2x in 2015 & 2016.  He was a 4x Super Region Place Winner, placing 5th in 2013, 4th in 2014, 3rd in 2015 and capped off his career with a championship title in 2016.  Mr. Martoccio was named the Senior Male Athlete of the Year at Kutztown in 2016.  Mr. Martoccio has been a Police Officer for the past 6-years.

David Osei (Abington 2009/Rutgers 2013) Wrestler:  Mr. Osei was the PIAA Runner-up at 285-pounds in 2009 with a season record of 44-1 as a 3x state qualifier with a career record of 132-28 (All-time Abington Career Wins leader).  Dave was a 3x Sectional Champion (2007 thru 2009), 2x District Champ (2008 & 2009) and SE Regional Champ in 2009.  He captained the Ghosts for three years, garnering titles twice at Brandywine Heights and three Wetzel Classic titles.  In addition, he was the 2009 Sectional OW and received the SE Regional Wrestling Officials’ Association Outstanding Sportsmanship Award that year as well.  He earned three SOL 1st Team Heavyweight honors (2007, 2008 & 2009) and was selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer All-Area 1st Team (2009) and appeared in Sports Illustrated “Faces in the Crowd”.  Dave competed in multiple national events scholastically, winning bronze at the Disney Duals, MAWA Eastern Nationals (medalist), and NHSCA Individual and Dual events.  He was also elected to the Pennsylvania’s Big 33 Football team and honored by the Philadelphia Inquirer. as a first teamer while in high school.  Mr. Osei moved on to college on a football scholarship at Rutgers University, earning Big Ten All-Academic honors twice.  He played professionally for AFL for the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks and was signed by the Philadelphia Soul.

Mr. Osei is currently teaching English and History at Mariana Bracetti Academy in Philadelphia and is the Head Wrestling Coach at Abington and has been an assistant football coach there as well since 2016.  Presenters-Mr. Jeff Franko, his former head coach at Abington & Mr. William “Billy” Brennan, friend and long-time Abington assistant coach.

 

Kim Smith (Springfield-Delco 1976/University of Pittsburgh 1980) Official:  Mr. Smith was a PIAA Wrestling Official for 40-years. For 10-years, he was the PIAA District One Rules Interpreter as a member of the Old York Road Wrestling Officials Chapter.  Kim served on the D1 post-season officials selection committee for over 15 years.  Mr. Smith has officiated eight PIAA State Tournaments and over 30 Regional tourneys. Kim is the only official in any sport to have officiated a State Tournament in four different decades and two different centuries.  Kim was a 1976 Sectional and D1 Champ and placed 4th at the SE Regional Tournament. Kim continued wrestling collegiately at the University of Pittsburgh for three years, competing at weights ranging from 134-158 pounds, foregoing his senior year to further focus on academics.  From 1986-1990 Kim was the Head Coach at Cheltenham High School.  His academic prowess is indicative of his many talents, having spent a long career in the pharmaceutical industry during which Kim joined the US Air National Guard, attended military flight training at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Oklahoma, was commissioned as a First Lieutenant and obtained an MBA from Saint Joseph’s University and a Masters of Biotechnology Enterprise and Entrepreneurship from Johns Hopkins University. Kim was also a member of the United States Dragon Boat Team, competing in international competitions in Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, Hungary and the United States-winning 19 world medals. His contributions and commitment to the rules of wrestling are evidenced by his numerous (over 200) submissions to the NFSHSA which has resulted in many rule changes/adoptions.  Kim was a consistent and poised official, making decisive calls while upholding the rules and integrity of the sport.  Mr. Smith is the proud father of three sons – Nathan, Nolan and Sam - who graduated from Owen J Roberts, each completing 11 AP courses and attaining National AP Scholar status while also being outstanding varsity soccer athletes.  Presenter-Friend & PIAA D1 Rules Interpreter, Mark Marino.

 

Tom Vivacqua (Delhaas H.S. 1979/East Stroudsburg University 1984) Coach:  Mr. Vivacqua retired from coaching after 36-years of coaching.  He began his career as an Assistant Coach at Council Rock in 1984, and remained so thru 1999.  In 2000, Tom took over as the head coach at Council Rock. After the Council Rock School District split into two high schools, North and South, Mr. Vivacqua took over as the head coach at CR North and retired after the 2020 season after accumulating 248 wins. Coach Vivacqua produced 44 Sectional and League Champions, 24 District Champs, 12 SE Region Champs, 18 PIAA Medalists, 4 PIAA State Finalists and 2 State Champions.  CR North won the 2020 SE Regional title in Tom’s last season as the lead man at CR North.  His teams qualified for the PIAA Team Championships six times.  Tom wrestled at East Stroudsburg for four years after graduation from Delhaas, where he captained the team his senior year.  Mr. Vivacqua has coached football at Council Rock for 25+ years, most recently assisting at CR South.  Now that he is a retired physical education teacher from CRN, he has taken to the mats as a PIAA official this past season.  Presenter-His former coach at Delhaas High School, Mr. David Blatt.
