PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

SOL National Conference

Sterling Limo Offensive Player of the Week
J
uawine Sowell, Abington – The senior tailback rewrote the record books at Abington with his 45 carries in a game that saw the Ghosts run 172 plays in an electrifying 35-34 come-from-behind victory over Northeast - a win that culminated with Abington scoring the game-winning touchdown with two seconds remaining. Sowell finished the game with 250 yards and four touchdowns.
Coach Tim Sorber says: “Juawine’s 45 carries is something that kind of snuck up on me, and I was kind of aghast when I heard it. To carry a ball that many times and the thing about it – Juawine is a not a big, physical back. He’s not the type of kid to do that, and it’s something hopefully we won’t ever have to do again.
“You take that many hits and then especially to make some big runs in the fourth quarter – which he did – is pretty amazing. Northeast did a nice job of not giving up the big play, and because of that, we were able to accumulate yards and run a lot of plays - keep getting first downs and keeping drives alive, and that attributed big time to him having so many carries.”

Sterling Limo Defensive Player of the Week
Taz Smith, Souderton – The 5-7, 136-pound safety had a huge night against a favored PW squad, finishing with 14 tackles, including one for a loss, and one interception. After coming up with an interception in the first half, Smith delivered his tackle for a loss during a key third quarter goal line stand by the Indians, who went on to win by a touchdown (21-14).
Coach Ed Gallagher says:  “Taz Smith really takes good angles to the football from his free safety position, and he loves to hit people. He also made a great play on the ball on his interception. We’re hoping to keep getting big plays from Taz as the year goes on.”

Sterling Limo Special Teams Player of the Week
Jamar White
- The speedy senior running back opened the second half of the Indians’ tightly-contested game at Plymouth Whitemarsh with an 84-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that put the Indians on top 14-0. It was a pivotal play as they went on to earn a 21-14 upset of the Colonials.
Coach Ed Gallagher says: “Jamar White is very dangerous with the ball in the open field. He had some good blocks on the kickoff return, and he accelerates well when he hits the hole. He’s also a good receiver from his backfield position and a good cornerback on defense.”

SOL Continental Conference

Sterling Limousine Offensive Player of the Week
Corey Davenport, Norristown –
It was the inspired play of the junior running back that propelled the Eagles to a 27-6 victory over neighboring Upper Merion that brought a welcome end to an 18-game losing streak. Davenport rushed for 194 yards – which included a 65-yard touchdown run - in a win that avenged last year’s heartbreaking 31-27 loss to the Vikings.
Coach Jason Powel says:  “Corey has been a constant in our new system in that he has accepted what we have asked from him and all the players, and he has led by example. He is our offensive leader and has earned the respect of his teammates as someone to emulate in practice. He has great vision for his position, and we look forward to watching him grow as a person and an athlete.

SOL American Conference

Sterling Limo Offensive Player of the Week
Chris Stone, Springfield –
The senior quarterback has returned to the lineup after being sidelined the entire 2013 season with an injury. In the Spartans’ 35-0 win over Lower Moreland, Stone – the state high jump champion – accounted for four of his team’s touchdowns, two in the air and two on the ground as he accumulated close to 200 yards.
Coach Chris Shelly says:  “He’s a tremendous athlete. He won the state championship for our school (in track and field), and he’s looking at big time Division One offers for track. We were worried we weren’t going to get him back, but he loves football. He’s just a tremendous kid.
“He’s like Johnny Manziel without the attitude. He brings that to the table. He’s got the charisma, everything but the bad attitude. He’s really grown up in terms of being a leader for us. I want to try to keep him off defense, but I can’t. He’s just that good of an athlete, and wherever we put him, he just makes plays. Our goal is to keep him healthy this year. Kids rally around him. He’s a special (kid), there’s no doubt about it.”
