PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Sterling Limo Player of the Week
Kyle Hickey, Council Rock South –
The senior wide receiver/defensive back was a difference maker in Rock South’s season opener at Pennsbury. Although the Golden Hawks suffered a 13-6 loss at the hands of the defending district champs, Hickey kept his team in it with a dominating defensive effort, finishing with 12 tackles, one pass breakup, a fumble recovery and one interception. On the offensive side of the football, he had three catches for 43 yards.
Coach Vince Bedesem says:  “Kyle Hickey is the best example of a team player. He is a player that plays multiple positions on the offense and defense. He is a co-captain that quarterbacks the defense. Kyle comes from a long line of Hickey boys that have played for us in the past 14 years as a program - all wearing #23, all playing defensive back with a bit of offense on the side. When asked throughout the years who the best or toughest Hickey there is, I say that's easy...It's Kimmy, who played soccer, and Carly just started playing for South soccer team. It's been our privilege to have such a legacy come through Council Rock South.”

Sterling Limo Special Teams Player of the Week
Dylan McDonald, Neshaminy –
The junior placekicker had seven kickoffs for 340 yards and one touchback. He was 4-for-4 on PATs and also had a key 37-yard field goal in Neshaminy’s 37-31 win over defending New Jersey sectional champion Montclair High School.
Coach Steve Wilmot says:  “It’s nice to have a kicker that when you’re inside the 25-yard line you know you’re going to come away with points. This is his third year kicking for us, and the best part about him is he still has one more year left. We’re excited for him, we’re excited for the year, and it gives us an option for points when we’re inside the 25-yard line, knowing we can count on him.”

National Conference

Sterling Limo National Conference Offensive Player of the Week
Mason Jones, Neshaminy –
In the Redskins’ impressive 37-31 win over Montclair (N.J.), the senior quarterback accounted for 214 yards of total offense. Jones had 109 yards and two touchdowns in the air, and he also rushed for 105 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries.
Coach Steve Wilmot says:  Mason gave a really gutsy performance. I think that’s the best word I can use for him. He started off with an interception for a touchdown and then things progressively got better from there. He ran for over 100 yards and threw two touchdown passes to Denzel Hughes. I guess the best word I could use for his performance on Saturday was he just showed a lot of guts.”

Continental Conference

Sterling Limo Continental Conference Offensive Player of the week
Mark Lopez-Shefcyk, Harry S. Truman –
The senior quarterback orchestrated the offense in Truman’s 28-14 win over a Bayard Rustin squad that was 10-2 last year and made an appearance in the district playoffs. Lopez-Shefcyk accounted for three of his team’s four touchdown, throwing a 57-yard TD strike and rushing for two more touchdowns.
Coach Jon Craig says:  “Mark exemplifies everything we talk about as a program. I can’t say enough about what he does for us, not just on the field, but the program in general. Athletically, he runs the show. He’s a natural leader, and he controls the offense. Any success we have this fall – a lot of it will be because of how he plays.
“It’s his second year with the offense, and he’s so comfortable. A lot of people look at him and don’t see the player who can be the athlete that he is, and then he gets out there, and he makes people miss. He’s a tough kid.”

Sterling Limo Continental Conference Defensive Player of the Week
George Pla, Central Bucks East –
The Patriots’ senior cornerback was a catalyst on defense, collecting seven tackles – two for a loss – in one half of action to help anchor a dominating defensive effort in CB East’s 54-14 win over Cheltenham.

Coach John Donnelly said. “George did a nice job of either setting the edge or running the alley. He continues to be a solid leader for us on and off the field. For his performance in the game and preseason scrimmages and also the way he approaches practice each day, George was awarded the 1st Lieutenant Colby Umbrell replica dog tag. Colby’s parents approached us with the idea, and we are honored and privileged to start this tradition at East on the field that bears the name of their son, a true Patriot. George epitomizes the ideals that the tradition represents.”

American Conference

Sterling Limo American Conference Defensive Player of the Week
Cole Swiger, Upper Dublin –
The senior linebacker wasted little time before making an impact in his return to football after playing for Upper Dublin’s district championship golf squad last year. In the Flying Cardinals’ 42-7 rout of Delaware Valley, Swiger had seven tackles to go along with two pass breakups and one sack. He also returned an interception 80 yards for a touchdown.
Coach Bret Stover says:  “The staff was really excited about his return to the football program. Cole is an exceptional athlete as he demonstrated Friday night, but what has been incredible is his ability to pick up our systems mentally. To watch him out there Friday night was like he had been in our program the last four years. What’s really exciting is that was only one week. He’s only going to get better.”

Sterling Limo American Conference Offensive Player of the Week
Rodney Morgan, Upper Moreland –
The Bears senior running back had a debut to remember, rushing for 251 yards and three touchdowns in Upper Moreland’s 28-15 win over Penncrest.

Coach Adam Beach says:  “Rodney is one of three running backs. We also have Nick DeLucas and Nick Pagano, and our quarterback (Casey Decker) ran well too, but the holes just seemed to be there for Rodney. He did a great job of getting downhill, and when he got in the secondary, he really exploded and found the end zone. He did a real nice job. He worked hard all offseason getting ready for the season. He’s been a corner force as well. He started playing more corner for us last year, earned his spot on the field. We expected him to have a good game, but I think he exceeded expectations with his performance.”
