Thomas SOL Swimmers Shine at State Meet (3-14-15)

Check out all the stop finishes on the final day of the PIAA Class AAA meet on Saturday.

LEWISBURG - Michael Thomas ended his stellar career with one final honor.

The Hatboro-Horsham senior was named the Outstanding Swimmer of the PIAA Class AAA swimming championships, which ended Saturday at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.

He won the 100-yard backstroke in 46.19 to defend the title he won last year.

“It feels pretty good,” Thomas said. “I was hoping for a little faster time but I can’t complain. I couldn’t really get moving on the first 25 so I tried to really get going on the second and third and I felt pretty good.

“I pretty much accomplished everything I set out to do. It was a good four years. I’m happy with it.”

Thomas also swam on the Hatters’ 400 freestyle relay, which finished 20th (3:14.98). Andy Thomas, Tim McPoyle and Sean Claggett were his relay mates.

Nick Zumpino finished 11th in diving for the Hatters(419.35). The Hatters’ finished 10th in the team standings with 64 points.

For the Hatboro-Horsham girls, Haley Sutton was 23rd in the100 backstroke (38.96).

Michael Jensen also won his second gold medal in as many days. He won the boys 100 freestyle in 43.29 to add to his victory in the 50 freestyle on Friday.

“It was awesome,” said Jensen, a junior. “It was a good race. I really tried to work my walls and it felt great. I was happy with it.”  

Teammate Wyatt Amdor was second in the 100 breaststroke (55.26).

The Upper Dublin 400 freestyle relay of Scott Luttman, Amdor, Ogden Leyens and Jensen took fourth (3:05.72).

“Everyone really put up a great time,” Jensen said.

Upper Dublin finished seventh in the team standings with 117 points.

For the Upper Dublin girls, Jenna Johns was 10th in the 100 freestyle (51.60).

Thanas Kountroubis of North Penn also took home a gold medal, winning the boys 100 breaststroke (55.16).

He was also on the 400 freestyle relay along with Liam Kelly, Brett Else and Mike Kern. They turned in a school record time of 3:04.94 en route to a bronze medal.

 “This is my first year swimming the breaststroke competitively in high school,” Kountroubis said.“I  tried it for the first time over the summer and it worked out really well for me so I stuck with it and it paid off.

“This was a spectacular two days for us. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Corey Smith was eighth in the 100 backstroke (51.11) and Kern was eighth in the 500 freestyle (4:40.60) to round out the swimming medal winners for the Knights.

Else was 18th in the boys 100 freestyle (47.46), Aidan Daly was 22nd in the 500 freestyle (4:44.88) and Harrison Friel was 23rd in the boys100 breaststroke (59.72).

North Penn had three divers in the finals. Bryce Hoch was fifth (443.80), Ian Boland Bintner was seventh (438.15) and Quinn Mitchell was12th (413.55).

The Knights were the top SOL team, capturing fourth as a squad with 170 points.

The North Penn girls’ team finished third overall (168 points). Individually, Olivia DiStefano was third in the 100 backstroke (56.06). She also swam on the fourth place 400 freestyle relay along with Aimee Baur, Erin O’Neill and Kailyn Evans (3:28.83).

Also for the Maidens, Megan Zartman was ninth in the 100 backstroke (56.47), Baur was 13th in the 100 freestyle (52.11), Evans was 15thin the 100 freestyle (52.30), O’Neill finished 23rd in the 100 breaststroke(1:06.83).

Pennridge finished right behind North Penn in the team standings, capturing fourth place with 156 points. Leading the way on Saturday for the Rams was Morgan Scott, who was second in the girls 100 freestyle (49.86).

She also anchored the 400 freestyle relay for Hannah Zurmuhl, Anna Beno and Brittany Weiss. They captured the bronze medal (3:24.72).

Weiss took sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.87) and Zurmuhl was ninth in the 100 freestyle (51.49).

Pennsbury’s Connor Doyle was fifth in the boys 100 backstroke (50.26). He was also a member of the 13th place 400 freestyle relay along with Daniel Lawton, Nicholas Jeronis and Travis Venables (3:12.31).

Collin Hanlon finished 23rd in the 500 freestyle (4:46.39) and Lawton was 23rd in the 100 backstroke (53.44).

Nash Nickerson of Central Bucks South finished fourth in diving (452.25).

Andrew Zhugayevich of Central Bucks East was sixth in the boys 100 freestyle (45.65).

Collin Villari, Zach Collester, Evan Villafanca, and Zhugayevich took 10th in the 400 freestyle relay in a school record time of 3:11.73.

For the CB East girls, Hannah Wittman finished 10th in the girls100 breaststroke in a school record 1:04.10. She also anchored the 400freestyle relay for Kirsten Mortimer, Erin Lengel and Lauren Griffith. The foursome finished 13th (3:34.33).

For Souderton, Ryan Witoslawski was 14th in the boys 100breaststroke (57.76) and in the same event, teammate Spencer Nice finished 20th (59.36).

Emma O’Neill of Abington was 11th in the 500 freestyle (5:03.40).

Rickilee Hodges of Souderton finished 21st in the 100 freestyle (53.05).

Wissahickon’s Danny Knoll was eighth in the boys 100 freestyle (46.39) while teammate Doug Boehme was 20th in the 500 freestyle (4:44.17).

Also for the Trojans, Amanda Zlotnikoff was 19th in the girls100 backstroke (58.69).

Matt O’Donnell of Council Rock South was 19th in the 100breaststroke (59.05).

Neshaminy’s David Kneiss finished 21st in the 100 freestyle(47.72).

Matthew Werner of Cheltenham was 21st in diving (167.55).
