Titans Running on All Cylinders in Win Over Bucks

DOYLESTOWN -- Explosive offense has been the name of the game at Central Bucks South for the past couple of years.

With Josh Adams in the backfield, it was pretty obvious which way the Titans were going to go when they had the ball.

But now it seems that South has found a strong complement to go with Adams. The Titans showed off a very good passing attack Friday night at War Memorial Field in a 41-14 mercy-rule victory over Central Bucks West.

Certainly, Adams demonstrated why Notre Dame is happy to have him as a committed recruit for next year. He gained 230 yards on only 14 carries, scoring touchdowns from 81 and 52 yards in the first half.

But he got quite a bit of help from quarterback Kevin Witchey and receiver Troy Robertson.

Witchey completed only seven passes but four of them went for touchdowns. He passed for 181 yards.

Robertson caught four of Witchey's completions for 107 yards and three touchdowns. The longest TD pass from Witchey to Robertson covered 73 yards.

"Everything worked out just as we wanted," Witchey said after the game. "I have a great team behind me.

"I never would have thought that (I would throw four TD passes in the first half). I can only thank my offensive line for keeping me protected."

Titans' first-year coach Tom Hetrick was impressed with the play of his quarterback.

"He was putting them right on the spot," Hetrick said of Witchey. "He needed to settle in the first quarter but then once he settled, he put the ball where we needed him to put it.

"I was very proud of him and I was excited to see him get off to that kind of start this year."

Robertson couldn't quite believe his good fortune.

"It was unbelievable," he said. "It didn't feel real, to be honest with you.

"I have to give all the credit to my quarterback. He was just unreal out there.

"He made perfect throws. If I had dropped them, I would have been disappointed in myself."

Witchey appreciated what he got from Robertson, also.

"In the first half, he had three touchdowns," Witchey said. "That's unbelievable. That was pretty cool to watch."

Witchey, Robertson and Hetrick all gave a lot of credit to Adams but not for his yardage gained or his TDs. They all appreciated the amount of pressure he takes off the rest of the offense.

"I think it was nice that Josh came out and popped that thing (the 81-yard TD run on the second play from scrimmage)," Hetrick said, "so that everyone could (relax) and just move on. We've got to be able to pass the ball and if people are going to sell out and try to put a stop to him...

"West came out aggressive and playing downhill, but when you do that, you leave yourself susceptible and you've got to hit those and we did."

Robertson knows what Adams does for the Titan offense.

"On one of my touchdowns, my quarterback came up to me and said that the safety completely bit on Adams (following him across the field)," Robertson said. "He is a huge part in what you can do in a passing game."

West coach Brian Hensel also knows what Adams can do both with the ball and without it.

"He really tilts the field," Hensel said. "They do a great job of using not just him but other guys as well."

Hensel went on to praise Robertson for his play against the Bucks.

"Eighty had three touchdowns tonight," said Hensel of the Bucks’ wide receiver. "That kid played out of his mind. He was a far better player on the field than I think I gave him credit for in the film I saw."

South’s defense also did its job. It held the Bucks scoreless in the first half and allowed only 14 points, all of which came in the final 5:36 of the game.

"I want us to play a great aggressive kind of defense," Hetrick said. "I could not be any more proud with how our defense came out and played an aggressive style of football."

Hensel was proud of his players also.

"They could have packed it in at halftime," he said. "But they said 'We're going to go out and fight for you, coach'. They didn't drop their heads."

Things went downhill for West from the opening kickoff. After Adams lost a yard on the first play of the game, he ripped through the Buck defense for 81 yards and the first TD of the game with only 42 seconds gone in the first quarter.

The Titans added two more scores in the opening period. Robertson caught a Witchey pass and rambled 25 yards for the touchdown and then added a second TD from five yards out.

In the second quarter, South kept up the pressure. Witchey hit Robertson for a 73-yard score, Adams broke a bunch of tackles before finally finishing off a 52-yard run and Witchey connected with Evan Becker for a 45-yard TD with only 47.3 seconds left in the first half, which put the game into the mercy rule category.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but West finally got untracked in the fourth. Jake Reichwein bulled in from the one for the first Buck TD and then Jake Metzer hit Michael Kovalic for a 29-yard score with only eight seconds remaining in the game.

This was a big win for South and Hetrick in his first game as head coach.

"I told the kids that I've been anticipating this game for 20 years," he said. "The kids have been anticipating this all the way back in January, and then in April when I got the job, I felt that this day was never going to come.

"When you open the season with CB West, it puts it at a whole other level of a (non-league) game."
