Ashleigh Sharp – Chestnut Hill College (Softball)

Major:  Early Childhood Education

Final list of colleges:  Chestnut Hill, Ursinus, Philadelphia University

Reasons for choosing Chestnut Hill:  “I loved the campus and the school size, and the girls on the team I stayed with were awesome. I clicked with them immediately. Coach (John) Kelly is a cool guy.”

What was the progression that led you to playing softball at the collegiate level?  “I started thinking about it in ninth grade because when I was on my travel team, my coach was a college player herself, and she would talk about playing in college. It encouraged me to want to play.”

Coach Heather Boyer says:  “I remember seeing Ashleigh as an eighth grader. I usually go down and try and check out the middle school once or twice a year to see what’s coming up. I remember seeing her off to the side doing her own pitching routine warm-up for that particular game she was going to throw, and she was very focused. As an eighth grader, that’s not usually the primary intention for softball. It’s more social related.
“As soon as she came to the high school, she was a natural fit to the varsity level. She’s very versatile, she’s an outstanding outfielder but can also pitch when necessary, and she has done that from time to time and helped us out. She’s very fast, which is a key asset to her defensive and offensive ability. She is a righthanded hitter who has transitioned into a lefty slapper, and she does both exceptionally well, so that really made her a critical component to our lineup last year and a great cleanup hitter.
“She’s just a really nice well-rounded overall player. There were years when I had her play shortstop when we’ve had injuries there. She can play first base. Honestly, you could put her anywhere. I think the only position she has not played for me yet is catcher, but if I needed her to, she would do it. She has a strong accurate arm and great game sense, plus she’s been a Carpenter Cup kid for three years. She got to experience the building that from the freshman experience to getting more time as a sophomore and then last year being on the team that won the whole thing. I think she’s going to see a lot of success with that at the college level too.”
