Stephanie Elechko is the undisputed leader of the North Penn volleyball team, and the senior captain has earned the respect of her teammates. “She’s calling meetings, she’s taking care of all the problems on the floor,” coach Bryan Yost said. “She has already run drills for the entire team, and she’s taught the jayvee middles how to improve their approaches. It’s basically like having a woman coach on the staff who can help relate to the girls better than any of us three guys.”

Elechko is one of the area’s premiere players and leads the Maidens in kills, blocks and aces. “She plays all the way around and does well defensively,” Yost said. “She has the ability to take over matches if she gets on a roll. She’s the voice on the floor. If we’re beating teams but we’re not playing well, she gets on the girls. She’s intense and a complete gamer.” Elechko has been playing on the club circuit since she was a freshman and the last two seasons has been a member of PVA’s number one team.
Elechko’s resume off the volleyball court is equally impressive. She is a member of the Key Club and SALSA (Spanish and Latino Student Association) and has volunteered her time to Special Olympics and Relay for Life. Service comes naturally to Elechko, who is one of five siblings. “I always enjoy making other people happy,” she said. “If I had to choose between my happiness and someone else’s, in a heartbeat, I would try and make someone else’s day just because I like seeing people smile, and that will make me smile.”

An honor roll student, Elechko plans to major in elementary education. “I have always learned that I need to succeed academically in order to get where I want to be in life,” she said. Elechko is being recruited by numerous schools interested in acquiring her volleyball talents. She is keeping her options open.

Univest’s SuburbanOneSports.com Featured Male Athlete (Week of Oct. 3, 2012)

Andrew Carber is a three-sport standout, excelling in golf, basketball and baseball. The Upper Dublin senior, captain of the Flying Cardinals’ American Conference co-championship squad, recently finished tied for third in the prestigious District One Golf Tournament. Success, according to his golf coach, is destined to follow Carber. “I have always said, ‘If you could buy stock in kids, you would put as much money on him right now as you could because he’s going to be a winner,’” coach Dave Koch said. “He works harder than anybody on the team. When kids are practicing, he’ll practice a half hour longer. He just puts everything into it. He goes out and leads by example. As Andrew goes, so goes the team.”

Last spring, Carber was a standout on a Flying Cardinal baseball team that not only won the SOL American Conference crown but also advanced to the state tournament for the first time in school history. The 6-8 senior also excels in basketball and earned second team all-league honors in both basketball and baseball as a junior. Golf, however, is his passion and the dream of one day becoming a Division One basketball player have changed. He now aspires to play golf at the Division One level. His game, according to his coach, doesn’t have any holes. “He has a great game,” Koch said. “His biggest advantage is his length is tremendous, and he hits the ball a ton. His putting is probably equally as good as his length.”

In the classroom, Carber is a straight A student, and he is involved in student government and is a member of the Spanish Club. He also is a member of the National Honor Society. Carber’s top schools include Clemson, Wake Forest, South Carolina and Pitt. He is debating between a pre-med of business major but is leaning toward pre-med.
