Lauren Crisler, according to her coach, is a dream player. Not because the North Penn senior is one of the area’s premiere basketball players – although that certainly doesn’t hurt – but rather for the way Crisler carries herself on and off the court. “She is just a really good teammate because you don’t have to worry – is she in a good mood or bad mood because she’s always in a good mood,” coach Maggie deMarteleire said. “I’ve seen her sad after some of our losses, but other than that, I’ve never seen her in a bad mood. She’s always pleasant, always smiling. That’s just the way she is, and it’s a good way to be. She seriously has been no drama and is just really a pleasure to coach because she’s a good kid.”

The combination of talent and a positive approach to the game has been a winning combination for Crisler, who helped lead the Maidens to last year’s District One AAA title game at Villanova University.

A four-year varsity player, Crisler has been averaging a double-double for a Maiden squad that entered the holiday break undefeated. She has been a captain for the past two years.. “Lauren is a leader by example,” deMarteleire said. “She’s not boisterous, she’s not loud. She talks on the court, but she’s just a very determined, focused person who gets the job done.”

Crisler also excels in the classroom. She is a member of the National Honor Society cabinet and is enrolled in honors and AP classes. She has been involved with Best Buddies, a group of students who participate in activities with special needs children. She also has worked with Special Olympics.

This past fall, she signed a letter of intent to accept a full basketball scholarship to American University. Crisler, who plans to major in business and communications, has goals that extend well beyond the basketball court. “I kind of want to be an entrepreneur and start my own business,” she said. “I also would like to study abroad – in Italy or somewhere in Europe.”

Univest’s SuburbanOneSports.com Featured Male Athlete (Week of Dec. 19, 2012)

Mike Molz, according to his coach, is the guy you’d want beside you in a foxhole or even if you were just in a tough spot in your life. “If I had a son, Mike is the kind of kid I’d want my son to be,” Abington wrestling coach John Gillespie said. The Abington senior has been part of the wrestling program for four years. “Mike is just one of those hard-nosed kids on the mat and in the practice room,” Gillespie said. “He’s always going. He has a motor on him. Even when he wins, he’s not satisfied. He wants to put out his best performance.”

Molz aspires to go into the military and is looking at military colleges. He doesn’t care which branch he serves in or which capacity. He just wants to serve his country. “I’m not 100 percent sure,” Molz said. “Navy, Marines, Infantry, whatever. This country has always been good to me, so I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t want to serve and give back. I’ve always had a sense of nationalism. I guess it came about more in fifth or sixth grade. I’ve always wanted to fight for my country.” He will go to the mat for the USA. Count on that. He also has gone to the mat for Abington, and he can be counted on there too. Molz went to districts last year and finished fourth at sectionals. “He’s had to work hard for where he’s gotten,” Gillespie said. “He has natural ability, but he has worked. If he can find the right program, he’ll do very well at the next level.”

Molz, who has been wrestling since age six, has been weighing Duke, Temple, the Naval Academy, Virginia Tech, the merchant Marine Academy, Penn State and the Coast Guard Academy. He hasn’t decided on a major but is leaning toward criminal justice. Molz is a member of the National Honor Society and takes AP classes. “He’s one of our leaders,” Gillespie said. “He does his best to motivate other kids. I can turn my back and leave the room, and he’ll be doing the right thing. You can talk to any of his teachers, and they have nothing but good things to say about him. He’s a great kid. He’s such a solid person and does everything you could possibly ask. Someone like him doesn’t come along often.”
